Garn’s brows scrunched in displeasure. He had given plenty of respect to this Sky Beast and yet it was being completely unreasonable.
“You want one of my companions? Tell me, did you offer this same deal to my other companions? Is that why none of them have come? They couldn’t sacrifice one of their own so you SLAUGHTERED THEM ALL!”
Too much time had passed and Rust and the others had not caught up. Garn was curious as to how this Sky Beast got to him so quickly and originally thought that it did not run into Rust and the others and instead went around and avoided them but if that were the case then Rust and the others should have arrived by now. With them still nowhere to be seen, Garn could only conclude that this Sky Beast had torn through them in only a few minutes.
(This foul monster. It probably playfully offered a similar deal to Rust and when he refused, it killed every one of them and now it’s trying to play with me, hmph. If it has already killed them, then I no longer need to wait for their return. I want to destroy this Beast here and now but the consequences will affect not just this stupid swamp but millions of human lives as well. It can delay me but it has no way of keeping me here.)
The Sky Beast feigned an innocent expression and smiled.
“Who? I’ve only just come here. You accuse me of killing your friends, that’s fine. Those that enter these lands and slay my subjects, well, their lives are forfeit. You as well, you’ve already crossed a line. Will you pay the toll and hand over that small one or do you truly wish for me to send you to the lower 7th realm of hell?”
As the wildfire still burned brightly behind him, Garn’s anger boiled over. He could no longer stand to listen to such insolence.
“I have given you nothing but face and yet you spit on it and treat me as a lesser. You offer no real deal and only push me into a corner. The power you wield is mighty but it can not compare to me.”
Garn took on a sarcastic and condescending tone and spoke once more.
“Tell me oh great and powerful Sky Beast…DO you dare!”
The Sky Beast grinned at Garn’s flip in attitude.
“And if I do?”
Garn thought this had to be some sort of stupid mistake on the Sky Beast part.
(It should clearly be able to feel my power yet it continues to provoke me. Does it seek its own death?)
Garn calmed down a bit before he curiously asked.
“You…Do you not know who I am?”
The number of people near Garn’s level of power on the entire Feya continent could be counted on one hand and one hand alone. To recognize Garn once you’ve felt his power should be easy for any with a smidgen of strength or reputation.
The Sky Beast smile grew wider.
“Master Garn of the far north. The protector of Treia. Said to be the strongest Mage in all of Feya. I, of course, know the legends. I and my brother grew up with our mother telling us horror stories around the night fire. You were the scary human that could lift the mountains and raise the seas. I’ve heard it all.”
“So you know of me, yet you still wish to fight. Even knowing that you cannot beat me, you are still staring at me, ready to plunge your fangs into my throat at a moment’s notice. Tell me, why? There’s no way you really cared for a few goblins, so what is your real motive?”
The Sky Beast threw back its head and roared with a belly full of laughter.
“Hahaha, you want my motives. You demand these things from me, hahaha. Humans are so funny, they think they’re so superior and privileged just for being a part of the human race. They think they’re owed even when they’re not and look at the world as theirs and theirs alone. This is simply rich, too rich.”
Garn’s voice filled with power and he roared in anger.
“YOU MAY LAUGH AND LOOK DOWN UPON ALL HUMANS IN THIS WORLD BUT NEVER AT ME!”
A wave of power shook the skies and an enormous amount of pressure swept over the Sky Beast, causing its expression to darken.
A small silence filled the air before the Sky Beast spoke calmly.
“You’re right, I would never look down upon you. As for you winning against me in combat, no matter what I do, to face you alone would be nothing more than suicide and on that point, you are right again.”
Asuna and the others sighed in relief when the Sky Beast admitted it couldn’t win but Garn and Kazuki picked up something from its speech and kept their guard up. Kazuki could tell something bad was coming but there was nothing he could do.
The Sky Beast paused his word for a moment before it glared sharply at Garn.
“Alone I would surely lose to you, however, alone I am not. It seems my brother has completed his task.”
A large tornado kicked up in the distance and sped over at a lightning-fast speed. It seemed to move from as far as everyone could see to right next to the Sky Beast in a matter of seconds and with it brought a terrifying force of wind.
Thousands of trees suddenly ascended into the air as they were ripped from their roots and tossed about like toys. The mile-wide wall of fire that had been raging on the other side of Garn’s protective barrier started dissipating and within a matter of seconds was snuffed out.
The force of the wind was so strong that Garn’s shield barrier constantly flexed and warped as though it were on the verge of shattering at any moment.
This tornado stopped right next to the Sky Beast and the winds began to calm. A moment later and the wind ceased completely. Next to the Sky Beast appeared a second Sky Beast almost entirely identical to the first. The only real difference that could be seen with the naked eye was the color of the mane. This one had a bluish mane and its body was covered in red fur. Looking closely though, a red liquid began to drip from the newly arrived one’s fur.
With the powerful wind no more, a sudden hail of trees and large rocks came raining down like death itself. A moment later and the land for several miles had now completely changed as the ground was littered with craters both big and small.
The second Sky Beast spoke to the first.
“Those humans were so weak but damn were they tasty.”
The second beast that just spoke flicked its tongue picking at its teeth before it spat something to the ground.
Everyone looked over in disgust to find that it was a mangled leg with large chunks of flesh torn from it. Danny almost puked at the sight of it. Everyone could now tell that the red liquid dripping from its fur was in fact blood but not it’s own. Asuna could be heard whispering under her breath.
“Rust and the others, don’t tell me.”
The first Sky Beast chuckled lightly.
“So you see, Master Garn, I am not alone. Were it just me, surely you could have slain me with some difficulty but now that my brother is here, kukuku, it is you who will fall.”
(Damn, so this is where his confidence came from. He had a brother the whole time. 2 Sky Beasts…Can I do this, damn.)
Garn looked behind him and touched the barrier. The walls began to vibrate and his voice seeped through so that only those inside could hear him.
“Alice, I need you to take everyone out of here while I stay and fight.”
Alice was frozen in place and shook her head.
“Master, no! If you stay and fight, you’ll die. Please let me help you.”
Garn shook his head.
“You would only get in the way.”
Alice grew frantic and she began to bang on the barrier.
“Master, I won’t, I’ll do everything I can, just please don’t force me to leave your side.”
Garn’s eyes turned desperate and his voice seemed to shake.
“Alice, you have been my greatest apprentice and have learned much. I need you to protect the heroes, they are our only hope if the world is to survive.”
Tears began to stream down Alice’s face. Her normally cold demeanor was now akin to a small child reaching out to a father.
“Master, please, I beg of you, let me out, let me fight with you. I don’t care if I have to die, I don’t care about the heroes or the world’s future if you’re not in it. Master! Please!”
The Sky Beasts saw this touching moment and glanced at one another. How could they allow such a perfect opportunity to go unimpeded. The Sky Beast’s gathered power into their stomachs before forcing it out of their mouths and with a powerful bellow they released their energy directly at Garn and the barrier protecting Alice and the heroes.
*RAAAAAA*
A Large fireball as big as a boulder flew out of one Sky Beast while blades of cutting wind flew out from the other.
Garn could sense this though and he threw up another barrier to protect himself whilst simultaneously increasing the strength of the other.
*Boom*
*Shick Shick Shick*
A large explosion shook the air. The power behind this magic was great and caused the barriers to distort constantly. Anything in the vicinity was now either reduced to ash or carved out by the wind blades. The two Sky Beasts seeing no counter continued their attack.
*Boom Boom Boom*
*Shick Shick Shick*
With chaos erupting on the outside, on the inside Garn was a sea of calm. He reached into the first barrier and gently stroked Alice’s cheek. Alice in return closed her eyes and gripped his hand firmly as she spoke in broken words.
“Mas…ter.”
As Alice’s tears rolled down Garn’s hand, all he could think about was how warm they were.
Garn smiled brightly at Alice.
“Alice, look at me.”
Alice’s eyelids slowly fluttered and she had to do her best to see through her tears.
“Alice, I’ve never had a daughter in all my years of living. If I did, I could only hope that she was half as smart and half as beautiful as you. I need you now, I need your help, Alice, you’re the only one I can trust to do this. Will you help me?”
Alice cried harder than she had ever cried before but still through the stream of tears she nodded as best she could.
“Master, I will do it.”
Garn tried to wipe her tears but to no avail, all he could do was smile at her as he took back his hand. Alice tried to hold onto his hand for as long as possible but Garn pulled away from her. Alice collapsed to her knees and held her hands tightly in front of her as she stared with pleading eyes.
Garn once more placed his hand on the barrier and drew power deep from within him. His eyes began to glow with a golden light as he gripped his staff tightly. Tapping the barrier gently with the end of his staff, Garn whispered the words.
“Alice, I love you.”
*FShhoooo*
The barrier glowed for a split second before it shot away like a meteor. Its speed was so great and swift that the two Sky Beasts were caught completely off guard.
“What!”
Garn turned around slowly and ascended up high up into the sky until he was at eye level with the two Magical Beast. Power began to rise from within Garn as his face took on a menacing expression.
“With this fight, the balance within a few thousand miles will be turned on its head and millions will suffer for it, but you two leave me with no other choice. It is time for you to die.”
