Return of the Fallen Volume 10 Chapter 55
“We’ll discuss more later. For now, think about what you can do, excel at what you’re good at, and leave your pride at the door, otherwise, you’ll simply be wasting everyone’s time but more importantly, you’ll be wasting my time.”
Everyone was as silent as a mouse which annoyed Kazuki.
“GO!”
His voice boomed and shook everyone to their core causing them to scatter like roaches as they raced to the labs and craft stations Kazuki had prepared for them.
Kazuki eyed Old Sid from across the room before he curled a finger and took Sid and disappeared.
The two appeared in Glacious’s tiny world. Kazuki sat down at the table that had been placed outside for breakfast and poured a drink for Sid. Old Sid was about to have a seat when a few Golems walked by carrying out maintenance and other types of work around the tiny world.
Sid watched with gleeful and curious eyes. He had helped to build Danny’s body which was basically a type of Golem. It had been his first and he was proud of it but now he was seeing real ones. These were the ones built by true masters and with just a glance he could tell the difference in his skill. The one he had helped to create was much stiffer than these. The only reason why it appeared to move as smoothly as it did was because Danny was operating it with his aura.
Had it been a Golem without a being controlling it, Old Sid knew how clunky it would have really been.
“So what do you think?”
Old Sid shook his head before sitting down with a sigh.
*Haa*
“Kazuki, do you really think we stand a chance. Just witnessing your power, I can’t even imagine a way to take you out, let alone more beings with your level of power. If they actually do come through and enter our Realm, how can we possibly…I’m sorry, I just don’t know.”
Kazuki was surprised. Out of everyone in that room, the person he would expect to seemingly give up so easily would be Old Sid. Sid was always up for the challenge especially knowing there would be more God metal to work with. The material he was more than obsessed over was within reach and yet he was doubtful of it all.
“This doesn’t sound like the Sid I know. Where is Sid the Giant, where is Sid the Dragon Slayer, Sid the Wise? You would never say such things before. What the hell happened in the short time since I’ve seen you?”
Sid grabbed the drink Kazuki had poured and instead of downing it like usual and slamming the empty mug on the table, Sid sipped at it before setting it down.
“Kazuki, have you not looked around lately? I have, I’ve taken a hard, long look. I’ve spent my entire life trying to perfect my craft, trying to exceed my limits, and build the ultimate tool or device. I’ve worked myself to the bone and surely cut my life short pushing myself hammering day in and day out. Skin scarred by the blistering heat and eyes half-blind from the millions of flashing sparks my heavy hammer showed me over the years of slamming it down again and again and again. I thought I was trying to find something in the flames, find my true purpose in those heavy swings. The sweat of my brow and the parch lips from the dry heat, I suffered decade upon decade because I thought it would lead me somewhere.”
Kazuki didn’t understand where Sid was going with this but he wasn’t going to interrupt as the old man seemed to pour himself into this.
“As I worked day by day, I suffered but at the same time, I loved it. I loved the harsh way my muscles screamed at me the more I pounded the metal and I loved the way molten metal was shaped by my will. This love became an obsession and the obsession led me to more pain and grief and more love. It was an endless cycle but I continued because again I thought there was something else, something more. Then one day, you showed up with plans for a Golem as well as a precious material. That was the greatest day of my life. I thought my purpose had finally arrived. The moment I finished crafting Danny’s new body, that feeling of completion and satisfaction only intensified further.”
Sid gripped his cup tightly before he became angry and then sad.
“That moment, the apex of my life, my crowning achievement, what was it worth? What was the point? As soon as Danny went out to fight, he was outclassed by everything living. All of these beings and creatures could tear into him and break him. My greatest creation was barely more than a toy in the eyes of the strong and mighty. That’s what my work was to them, a damn toy. Then, you return once more and the things you told us and showed us, again it hit me, what is the point? I worked hard and suffered all of my life but my very best was nothing to you or others. I wish there was something even greater inside me, something I could put together that really could compete with you and others like you but…I realize now, I don’t have it. I don’t have that spark, I don’t have that imagination to even begin to come up with an idea that would hold you back. Bind you, no chance, harm you, as infinitely close to impossible as one can get.”
Kazuki became annoyed and slammed his fist on the table shattering it into thousands of little pieces.
“You’re absolutely wrong. A toy, how foolish Sid. That so-called toy helped me slay many enemies, all of which were at the 5th stage or higher. It’s not simply about what the tool is that makes it work but the ones who use it as well. If there was any other person operating the tool you made, I doubt we would have been so successful and I doubt I would still be alive to this day. You may have not seen the potential in your own creation but Danny did and because of it, he was most deadly and could do many things that you yourself would say are impossible. Danny was capable of doing all of these things not only because of who he is but also because of what you built and are you seriously forgetting that his body was the first-ever Golem you ever successfully built. Imagine what would happen if Danny told you about the weaknesses, would you not be able to come up with fixes, would you then not be able to make improvements. Your crowning achievement could be said to be a first draft, right?”
Sid stared blankly at Kazuki and didn’t know what to say.
“You’re mind is closed to the possibilities. You are still thinking about your small world, let me show you something.”
Kazuki placed his aura around old Sid making a barrier. he also placed plenty of air within so Sid could breathe before the two vanished once more before reappearing in space high above Gordonia.
As soon as Sid reappeared above the world he was shocked and terrified at first. His body floated around aimlessly before Kazuki stabilized him upright. Kazuki spoke to Sid through his mind.
(Look down there, that is our world.)
Sid’s wrinkly eyes widened as he looked at the bright world down below.
(That is Gordonia?)
Kazuki could easily perceive Sid’s thoughts and nodded.
(Yeah, it ain’t the only world though. Look around.)
Sid did just that and took a look around. His vision was filled with planets and stars in every direction. Usually, he stayed inside and did nothing but hammer away and create things. He sometimes heard others talk about how beautiful the night sky was. How it was filled with infinite stars that shined and glimmered like little treasures in the night sky.
Only now did he truly take a look and the first thought that came to him was.
(Beautiful.)
Kazuki faked a blush and joked.
(Old man I didn’t know you swung that way!)
Old Sid was shocked and became angry but before he could scream inside of his head, the two vanished once more and appeared far away near a bright white sun.
(This is quite a distance from our world but its still just as beautiful.)
Kazuki then pointed behind Old Sid and into the distance.
Sid looked behind him but couldn’t tell what Kazuki was pointing at until Kazuki told him.
(Do you see that tiny blue dot far off that way?)
Sid had to squint before he could see what Kazuki was pointing at.
(Yes, that little blue speck, what about it?)
(That tiny speck I’m pointing at, that’s Gordonia.)
Sid’s body trembled in disbelief.
(Th…That is Gordonia. It’s…It’s so small.)
