Return of the Fallen Volume 10 Chapter 62

Old Sid was curious about the heart of a star and thought this was the reason Kazuki had brought him to this workstation until he noticed a single piece of paper lying on a brightly lit table. The moment his eyes laid upon the paper, his mind went blank.

“Wh…What is this?”

Sid grabbed the piece of paper and held it directly in front of his face as he pined over it. It was a simple outline for some type of device but the intricacies and function of the device were something he had never seen before. It was obvious there were many things left to be desired but the detail and the idea behind it blew old Sid’s mind.

“Kazuki, where did you get this. Is this another piece of ancient magitech that’s been lost in Glacious’s tiny world, hidden from humanity!?”

Kazuki shook his head.

“This, I had some difficulty trying to reach the core of a star. The mysteries behind it are too much even for me but then something came to me. A way to help me reach the so-called heart of a star. I believe with this magic tool I may just be able to peer into the depths of what was once unknown and find what you wished for.”

Sid heard this and was shocked. He thought Kazuki was now an all-powerful being so when he heard Kazuki admit to failure, it was more than unexpected.

“So there are things even you can not do.”

Kazuki didn’t like the way he said it but Sid wasn’t wrong so Kazuki simply added.

“For now.”

Sid’s eyes never left the paper as a flood of thoughts and ideas came flowing into him one after another.

“This will require an enormous amount of energy just to operate. You will need a master of space to inscribe several of these functions alone. This part here will be especially difficult.”

Sid tapped on the paper pointing at an intricate part of the device.

“Kazuki this part here makes no sense. In order for this part to operate you would need 1,000, no 10,000 individual physical pieces to work in synch all at once. If even a single piece is timed incorrectly or falls off cadence, slips a gear so to speak, it could cause catastrophic failure to the entire device. Why would you put this in the design? No one would be able to activate this device unless they knew specifically what order to activate everything. It’s almost like you put in a secret combination so that no one else but you…”

Sid’s words stopped as he suddenly understood.

“You don’t want anyone else to know how to activate your device but you or well you and the person who made it. What are you trying to do by keeping this hidden? What would others do if they knew that besides you the only other person who knows how to activate this is me?”

Sid was on edge as he realized the dangers of knowing what he knows but Kazuki chuckled.

*Heh*

“So long as I exist, who in this Realm would dare threaten you. That concern is unfounded since I’m here.”

Sid knew this part was true. With Kazuki around, and he was Kazuki’s friend, his life was basically untouchable. The thing he was doubtful about though was the whole secret activation.

“If my concern is unfounded in regards to my life then what about the secret activation. Why put something like that in the design. Why not let everyone see this why trust me?”

Kazuki placed a hand on Sid’s shoulder.

“I trust you not only because you are my friend but also because you are not greedy for money, nor for fame. Instead, your greed lies in crafting, forging, hammering, constructing magic tools. I know that you cannot be bought and are loyal. I’m sure when you built Danny’s body others became suspicious. After all, it’s not too rare when someone starts buying up rare materials from all around but it is noticeable. Especially when those materials are all going to one shop in particular. I’m sure you got all kinds of harassment after I and Danny left.”

Sid nodded. It was true. After he completed the Golem body for Danny, there were no-gooders coming to bug him at all hours. Nobles, Mages craftsman of his own peers. All snooping and sweeping up trouble all day every day but Sid never gave anything away. Even when people pleaded begged and even threatened, he still never let a single detail slip. Sid really was loyal and would not betray not just friends but any who put their trust in him.

“Those annoying bastard bitch flies. Always pushing with their threats. If I had the strength I would have caved their faces in one after the other.”

“No doubt. At the time no one knew me nor what I was capable of. Had they known I’m sure most would have left you alone but now things are different. King Brian will spread my name among those who should know, and he will inform them of what will happen if they bother those they shouldn’t. As for the reason I don’t want just anyone knowing how to activate this device is simple. It all goes back to what Glacious once said about the Golems and why he didn’t spread the information on how to create them, it’s just far too dangerous. Not the device itself but rather the product it can make.”

Kazuki opened his hand a small crystal the size of a hair appeared above his palm, floating silently. Sid froze on the spot and he felt a tinge of drool running down his chin.

“Were I to fill this crystal up to its full capacity it would have enough energy to destroy a dozen worlds. The new arc gates I just built connecting the cities of Feya could be powered for billions of years with a single one of these. Once this is filled, it also has another function that will allow it to expel energy so it does not become overloaded and break. I…”

Kazuki stopped here as Sid was looking off. He slowly reached forward as if he were a zombie. His hand froze just before he grabbed it as he asked with all sincerity.

“M…May I?”

Kazuki had never seen Sid so polite but at the same time, he could see a crazy look in Sid’s eye. One that could not be hidden even if he tried. he knew if he said no, even though the power gap between them was like the sky above and an ant below, he knew Sid might just go crazy and leap for it.

Kazuki smiled demonically as he swiftly stored the crystal in his storage ring.

“No, you wouldn’t be interested in such trivial things.”

Sid felt like his heart and mind had exploded all at once and he released a strange guttural sound.

*gUh*

Kazuki didn’t expect this weird noise nor did he expect tears to start building up at the edge of Sid’s eyes.

(What the fuck!)

Kazuki quickly brought the crystal out and tossed it to Sid.

“Here, just don’t cry!”

Sid snatched the tiny crystal out of the air as if his very life depended on it before pulling it into his chest and hunching down overtop of it. His heart was racing like never before as he slowly pulled the crystal away from his chest to take a look. He could sense strange inscriptions inside and immediately he understood the crystal’s use and began to fill it up with his own energy.

Very quickly he noticed that no matter how much energy he poured into it, it did not get full. No, it was nowhere near its full capacity. Sid’s senses stretched deeper and he examined where his energy flowed into the crystal and was shocked when he found that his energy was located in a single spot and again was nowhere near full.

His thoughts wandered back to the blueprint Kazuki had just shown him and many details stuck out to him.

“The capacity of this crystal…there’s nothing like this in the entire Feya continent, no the entire world. I sense gravitational inscriptions and even barriers. Kazuki, just what in the world did you make?”

Kazuki smiled proudly as he told Sid the name.

“Cosmic crystal, that’s what I decided to call it.”

Sid’s hands trembled as he heard the name.

“Cosmic crystal.”

Sid whispered the name almost as if to confirm that it was really in his hands. One would think the name was conceived from the start but actually holding it in one’s own hands and the name could only be Csmic crystal.

Kazuki pointed at the hair-sized crystal before sending his own magical energy into it. Very quickly it was filled with energy and began to glow like a radiant star in the night sky. Sid’s eyes shined with promise as he held the crystal up under the light and as this light shone through Sid couldn’t help but whisper.

“The power of a sun in the palm of my hand.”

The moment he said this, Kazuki felt it sounded very familiar and he recalled a movie back on Earth he had once watched.

(Hmm.)
