Return of the Fallen Volume 10 Chapter 74
Alutra agreed with Danny.
“Your right, we did get lucky. At the same time, for everything to have worked out as well as it did shows that there is some excellent talent in this Lower Realm. Luck played a part yes but so to did the incredibly cunning and planning minds of the two of you. You have shown me a few unexpected things, hehe. A real Demigod would have noticed its own power being reflected but that smokey creature was still at the 7th stage. The fact that it had a Divine Soul weapon in the first place is unheard of. It must have come upon a grand opportunity and discovered the weapon by happenchance. Otherwise, I just can’t explain how it got that weapon.”
Everyone became curious and Kazuki asked.
“We still know very little about Divine Soul weapons. You suddenly warned us of its danger but what exactly is this thing in the first place.”
Kazuki pointed at the soul weapon questioningly.
This time it was Alutra who brought out her own soul weapon. A long glaive that was even taller than her by several feet. Even with such a huge frame, the weapon seemed to fit in her hand perfectly.
“Divine Soul weapon, as the name implies is a weapon composed of both soul energy and divine energy. I don’t know how the smoke creature got its weapon but the only way I know how one can forge it is by personally using the power of the soul and one’s own divine energy within.”
A soft glow surrounded the long glaive and a golden flame danced along its shaft making its way to the blade. A strange and powerful heat spread out in large waves and made the air screech as it tore through it. It made it difficult to breathe and the heat made one’s skin sting. Alutra did this for a single second before pulling the energy back, reducing it so that only a soft warm glow spread around.
“You two figured it out without me saying anything earlier. Yes, a soul weapon is connected to its owner’s soul. A fragment of my soul is left within the soul weapon and through my will or thoughts, I control this weapon as if it’s an extension of my own body. If you two didn’t use your sword forms and the lightning to reflect my attack back and into this ring, a single attack of mine would have destroyed this entire Realm.”
A few people couldn’t help but swallow hard hearing this.
“When one reaches the Demigod stage, you can start to make your own divine power within yourself, though that process can be unquestionably slow. Taking in divine energy directly is the way nearly all Demigods and Gods choose to gain divine energy. In a Lower Realm though that process is much harder depending on the Realm itself. Some Realms have more Divine energy and others not so much. This Realm for example has almost none and is quite sparse even with regular magical energy. Taking it from ones surroundings is one way and another is to take it directly from a Demigod or God.”
As soon as Alutra said this, everyone’s thoughts immediately went to Fera’s corpse but Alutra quickly denied that route a sif she knew what they were thinking.
“Although we can take that energy, that is only when we use our soul weapons. Someone who has divine energy within them has to be killed with a soul weapon in order to have their own divine energy taken from them. You all must be thinking about Fera. Because she is already dead, I can not do anything with her divine energy. Divine energy from a corpse is no longer the same as it is in a living being. It acts almost like poison to me and my soul weapon. If it enters me or my weapon, it can degrade my soul. Since the energy is weaker, it might not kill me but it would definitely be a problem and weaken me to a certain extent. Recovering from it would also depend on who was affected. Personally, that energy from her corpse could poison me for 10’s of years or maybe even hundreds. I’m still not all the way used to this body yet so I can’t say for sure. So me taking that energy from her corpse is not an option. Soul weapons have very few weaknesses but that is definitely one of them. Another weakness is of course another soul weapon.”
Alutra wanted to demonstrate by touching her own glaive to the ring weapon but she decided against this. Why put the Realm at risk over a demonstration she thought, so instead she just explained.
“Soul weapons are not indestructible and can be destroyed by other soul weapons. Regular clashing alone has the potential to destroy a soul weapon but this is a rare occurrence. When one brings out their divine energy through their soul weapon, it changes the power by such a magnitude that one would consider the difference disgusting and unnatural. Were I to strike this weapon without any divine power coming out I could destroy it in maybe a hundred strikes. If I used no power though and our weapons clashed if it was just the weapons banging away, again and again, it could take anywhere from several hundred thousand years to possibly an eternity. This depends on who created it, how strong their soul was, how strong the soul fragment within is, and a few other factors.”
Mei became excited.
“It’s that tough. I want one, aunty show me how please please please?”
Alutra shrugged.
“If you become a Demigod, I can show you a path but once you are on said path, you cannot step off otherwise you could irrevocably damage your soul. This would not only affect your power going forward but it can also make it so you never create a Divine Soul weapon.”
Danny thought about something and wondered.
“If one’s soul weapon is destroyed, wouldn’t the soul fragment inside also be destroyed and in that case, that fragment that has a connection with your soul, wouldn’t that also harm you?”
“Right you are when it comes to the fragment inside. If your soul weapon is destroyed, then the fragment within can only be destroyed but this does not bring just simple harm to one’s soul. Since that fragment is connected to the rest of your soul, its destruction means your own soul’s destruction. If your Divine Soul weapon is destroyed, your soul itself is destroyed and you are finished. Death is the only thing that follows.”
Silence spread through the world after Alutra said that.
Mei shook her head.
“Aunty, never mind, I…I don’t need any of those soul weapon thingys.”
Danny rubbed his chin in thought.
“So this weapon is both a great power as well as a dangerous liability. On one hand, it allows you to wield great power, on the other hand, were you to come across an opponent leagues above you, they could potentially kill you permanently in a single strike. At least if they cut into your flesh, you could regenerate or even find a new body, but the destruction of your soul weapon is a true end. Interesting.”
Kazuki shrugged.
“It doesn’t change much in reality. In the end, if you find yourself face-to-face with an enemy who is that much stronger than you, then they can still kill you with a single strike. If they use an attack that pierces through your defenses and destroys your soul right from the start, it would be the same ending anyway.”
Danny nodded in agreement. Alutra agreed to a certain extent.
“Still, I’d much rather have a soul weapon than not. It can change the tide of battle in a single stroke. I’ve seen fathe…Orberus slay thousands of Gods and millions of Demigods with a single sweep of his weapon. Fighting them all one by one would be ludicrous and time-consuming.”
Kazuki couldn’t disagree with that sentiment. Better to take out a shit ton of opponents in a single move than waste time fighting them all one by one. That was not only tiring but also gave one’s enemies more openings and chances to end you.
“Right, now that we know a little more and we can’t get rid of the Divine energy coming from this ring weapon does anyone have any ideas on what should be done with this thing?”
Kazuki was seriously asking because he had no idea what to do with it.
Triska was the first to speak up.
“Can you not use it, or even if you can’t, can one of us try it? If even a single one of us is capable of handling this soul weapon, our advantage will rise drastically. Even if we can’t fight with it, a foe wouldn’t know that. With them just seeing it in our possession, it could make them curl their tail between their legs and flee from our Realm.”
This was actually a good idea and almost everyone was down for this suggestion but Alutra admittedly refused.
“That can’t happen, or rather, it’s impossible.”
