Return of the Fallen Volume 11 Chapter 85
(Infinity Blade…I like the name.)
Kazuki picked up another one of the blades, and again he could sense the essence of time magic within the sword.
(Its capacity isn’t actually infinite you know. After taking a single look aynone would be able to tell. The name Infinity Blade is kind of pretentious if you ask me.)
Arc came in with a cold bucket of water and Kazuki was annoyed.
(Of course, I know it’s not really infinite Arc, that would be impossible. Still, do you have to ruin a man’s fun? It’s the sound of it that makes you feel powerful.)
(Is that all it takes to please you Kazuki? How human-like.)
Kazuki was about to put the blade back but Samuel stopped him.
“Sir Jentson, I would like for you and Lady Marty to each have one.”
“Hmm, aren’t you going to sell these? If I and Marty each keep one you’d only have one left that you could sell, no?”
“While true but that is only for now. As you can see, these infinity blades cannot be stored the normal way. Putting them in a storage device just doesn’t work, so before I left home, I made sure to schedule a shipment of Infinity Blades to be delivered here. They are set to arrive within a week or so after I left.”
“Hmm, even if you can’t store them in a ring, your ship has plenty of space. Why didn’t you place them aboard and come with them?”
As soon as Kazuki said this, a memory flashed in his mind. Samuel as well said the reason at the same time.
“It was Simmons. He said we should wait to send them just in case something went wrong. I did not think much of it at the time. Simmons took care of many important things for me and I just assumed this was another one of those things. The fact that he’s a traitor, makes me question why he would do this. Why would he purposefully want me to wait on sending the shipment?”
Kazuki already knew the answer. His soul reading ability could dig through all the thoughts and feelings one had at any given moment, that is as long as they were weaker than him. When it came to Simmons and his thoughts about Samuel at the time, it was a way of protecting the boy. Kazuki found Simmons to be more complicated than he originally thought. While it was true, that Simmons absolutely hated Samuel’s father, the same could not be said about the son.
Kazuki though had no reason to offer this information up. To him, the way this was going, if he was honest about Simmons, it might add more complications to the already complicated situation. Just as he was thinking this, Kazuki got a sense of what Samuel was feeling in his soul and let out a sigh just as Samuel began to speak.
“I think…no, I wish to help Simmons. Thinking about it further, he did what he did because father would not help. I don’t know why this took place but it still does not sit right. The fact that Simmons was set to betray me and yet he still went out of his way to make sure my family’s future did not fall into the enemy’s hands. Even if I were to be kidnapped, I’m sure, no I’m positive, he would not have let my takers harm me.”
Samuel was about to say more when Kazuki stopped him.
“That’s more than enough. What you’ve said just now, even if true, is beyond foolish. You think Simmons would have any choice in the matter when it came to others harming you? How utterly naive of you. The fact remains, Simmons did betray you. The men of your crew, they were innocent and because of his traitor’s ways, most of them died. Did they not have families, did they not have mothers, fathers, or kids of their own? What you’re speaking of, is a great way to get people to loathe you. Imagine fighting with your life on the line for a shitty snot-nose brat who would allow a traitor to get away with having you and your friends murdered. You need to step up and throw away that childish way of thinking before even more of the people around you get killed. Otherwise, their deaths will be tied directly to your poor decisions. Speak no more about helping Simmons, otherwise, I will sever our agreement here and now and you will be all on your own.”
Kazuki got up and left the room without another word. Marty as well handed one of the swords back and shook her head.
“Ya got enough on your mind already kid. Add more of it and you’ll just bog yourself down with confusion. What ya need now are clear thoughts and focused meaningful actions. Don’t forget that it is not only your life that is at risk right now but all of ours. I’ll stick around for now but that’s only if Jentson does the same. If he’s out, then sorry but so am I.”
Marty left right after, leaving a stunned Samuel behind.
—————————————————————————-
Kazuki went down to the 1st floor and there were only three people left. The spider woman, Chaka, the older gentlemen Bersik and the betrayer, Simmons.
“So everyone else left?”
Bersik came over in a rush and bowed respectfully.
“Yes sir. They decided it was not in their best interest to continue serving the Cortail family at this time and offered their apologies.”
“Oh, did they now. They actually apologized…Don’t sweeten it, I won’t scold you, so speak honestly.”
Kazuki glared at Bersik and he started to sweat coldly. His dog-like ears fell flatly to the side of his head and his short tail was tucked between his legs.
“Am I that obvious sir?”
Kazuki wanted to laugh. He was acting just like a scared pup. Of course, it was obvious. Kazuki just gave a nod.
“Forgive me Sir benefactor. I did not mean to speak falsely, I just did not wish to
“Forget it, just be honest with me from her eon out, otherwise, I don’t need liars around me.”
Bersik got the message and vowed to never lie to Kazuki ever agian, lest he not be around.
“Sir, Honestly, the men spoke rather crudely. They could risk their lives for Young Master Cortail because he was generous and took great care of them but seeing the Young Master allow Simmons to keep his life after what he had perpetrated, the men could not forgive this injustice and cursed all of the Cortail family before leaving in anger. I…I couldn’t stop them, forgive me Sir benefactor.”
Kazuki shook his head.
“Forget it, the smaller the group, the fewer things could leak. I don’t need people like that to remain as an anchor around any of our necks. Them leaving will actually benefit us and those men will be cursing themselves as fools once they see how many fat stacks of cash flow through this place.”
Bersik tilted his head causing his dog ears to flap to a side as he asked.
“Cash Sir Benefactor?”
(That’s right, these people wouldn’t have heard of such a term.)
“Money, currency, crystal. You know, the riches.”
“Ah, of course, Sir benefactor. They surely will be missing out on all of the fat stacks of cash.”
Bersik smiled when he said this and Kazuki felt like laughing. The way the man-dog, said the unknown term with such sincerity was kind of funny.
“Anyway, is everything locked down yet?”
Bersik nodded.
“Yes, Sir Benefactor. Chaka relayed the message and as soon as the others quit and left, I secured the door and activated the barrier around the building. Now only a God could enter this place.”
“Good, Do we have any blank signs lying around anywhere? It’s time we start putting the plan into action.”
Once more Bersik tilted his head.
“Plan Sir Benfactor?”
Kazuki called over Chaka and Simmons, the three were gathered in a little huddle. Chaka and Bersik were excited to hear about a plan to save the place, while Simmons still held hatred for Kazuki but with a single look from Kazuki, Simmons’s glare quickly softened into a neutral expression.
While he was telling them about the sale, the three all shared the same look of disbelief. They couldn’t believe Samuel would ever agree to this and thought it was business suicide. At the same time, none of them could question Kazuki when he looked at them with a serious expression.
“Now, that you three know, get to it. I’ll be coming back down here in a while. Everything should be done by the time I return.”
Kazuki left. Simmons went to follow Kazuki’s orders begrudgingly but the Chaka and Bersik did not disband their huddle and had a brief chat.
“Bersik, this can’t be right, Young Master loves his family business, he wouldn’t dare sink it like this would he?”
Bersik shook his head.
“Chaka there’s really not much we can do as slaves. This Jentons fellow is quite powerful and he seems to be leading Samuel about. All we can do is follow his orders and wait this out. Hopefully, the patriarch will finish his duel as quickly as possible and settle the situation.”
“I hope so. I don’t want Young Master to lose a piece of his family’s legacy because of some wicked outsider. We must be Young Master’s support in all of the hard times.”
Bersik’s tail began to wag at this.
“Agreed, for the Young Master we can do anything.”
