Return of the Fallen Volume 12 Chapter 28
As his face morphed and changed, the girl could only stare with a look of confusion. After half a second, Kazuki’s face thickened and his chin became more pronounced. His nose rounded and his eyes widened slightly and his lips thinned. His skin darkened a few shades and he took on more of a bronze-like color. His eyes with a finishing touch became dark green like a shrub.
Kazuki’s naturally handsome face became rougher and he looked stoic.
The girl was confused at first but she did not release a single complaint nor ask any questions.
“Hmm, are you not surprised by my new face?”
The girl shook her head.
“Mama says there are many people with many reasons who have to hide their identity all throughout the three Higher Realms. She says this is a way to survive and should not be questioned if this person is stronger than you are. Otherwise, things could get dangerous. If Mister Borus is hiding his face it must be for a good reason because you are a good person.”
Kazuki raised a brow.
“Am I little one? Just how do you know that for sure?”
Kazuki smiled with his teeth as if to frighten her but she was unafraid. It seems she was already trusting him.
Lana thought for a moment before pointing at the tiny horse figurine in her hand.
“If you were a bad guy, you wouldn’t have given me this gift and also you saved me and Sofie as well. Why save us when you could have just flown away without looking back? Besides, you’re my new friend and my friends aren’t bad.”
Kazuki found the girl’s thoughts to be naive but he wouldn’t argue here. Still, even if the girl was not questioning it, there would be those that would. Most likely her parents.
Kazuki sent out a small wave of power that entered both the girl’s soul world and her wolf Sofie. With his soul-reading ability, he quickly changed a single memory in both of them. Since the two of them weren’t Demigods, changing a memory was as easy as breathing.
Kazuki only did one thing and that change was his original appearance in their memories. Now what he looked like before he took on this new appearance was a shorter man with the face of an average person. Nothing too drastic.
“So you think I’m giving this toy to you? When did I agree to that?”
Lana thought for a moment and realized Kazuki never actually said she could keep it and he had only agreed to let her hold it until she was reunited with her family. Her expression sank and she reluctantly tried to give it back but then Kazuki laughed.
“Hehe, I’m only teasing you, child. How about this, you don’t mention my change in appearance and you can keep the toy permanently.”
Lana’s eye’s lit up but then she shook her head.
“I can’t lie to mama or papa. If they ask me I have to tell them the truth. Here Mister Borus please take it back.”
Kazuki was surprised at how honest this kid was. Many children would not give up the opportunity to have a new toy over a small lie that would have no ill effect. This kid though was one who put truth above wants or wishes.
Kazuki didn’t take the toy back. Instead, he smiled and pat her head.
“Honesty is admirable. Fine, you keep the toy and if your parents ask of course tell them the truth but if they don’t ask, then there’s no need to just tell them right.”
Lana brightened and she nodded repeatedly before hugging the tiny horse.
“Thank you Mister Borus, hehe.”
“Right, we should hurry up. I’m sure your parents are plenty worried. Sofie, you should shrink down as well.”
“Mister Borus you already know about that rule. Have I thought you’ve never been to my city before.”
Kazuki shrugged.
“I’m sure your city is like other cities right? They don’t allow others to take up too much space as it inconveniences everyone else. Unless your city is different…Is it?”
Lana shook her head.
“No, it’s like other places. The Gods don’t seem to like it when there’s too much clutter, at least that’s what mama says.”
Sofie was a beast at the 7th stage so it could easily manipulate its size. It shrunk down to the size of a small fruit before jumping onto Lana’s shoulder as if practiced. Kazuki took Lana’s hand and his power surrounded them. With a single step, he traveled hundreds of miles in an instant and appeared at the end of the long line going into the large city.
His sudden appearance at the end of the line brought a scare to many of the nearby travelers. This line of people, many of them were quite strong. Some were even Demigod’s yet none of them had sensed Kazuki until the very moment he had arrived in line with them. They had even sensed the girl and her pet several thousand miles away before their arrival but paid her no mind as she was a weakling in their eyes.
The real reason they had a fright though was that they could not see through Kazuki’s power. They could not sense any Divine power coming from him. They sensed a single Divine crystal in a pocket in his clothes but besides that, they felt no energy coming from him. Even Gods emitted Divine power so to say that Kazuki was strange was not an exaggeration.
Kazuki of course did have Divine energy, though it was a small amount. Inside his core, he held Chaotic energy. These energies separately were well into the hundreds of thousands and he could tap into and access every single one of them at any moment. The only annoying thing about this energy was the fact that just like Divine energy is was sparse in his surroundings and was only in larger amounts from the source, Chaotic space.
For him, accessing Chaotic energy was easy. He merely needed to tear open Chaotic space, which could be done by simply grabbing space and tearing it open. He could also use his Artifact ability to convert whatever energy was in his surroundings into Divine energy but he found that slower than simply opening Chaotic space and filling up so to speak on the energy in there.
Because of all these different energies inside of him, he emitted no Divine energy whatsoever. Instead, if any energy did surround him it would be Chaotic energy and these many different energies would just feel like Chaotic space to these people.
On top of all of this, with his Artifact power, he could simply hide all of his energy like Arc. Now, not even a God would be capable of seeing through him and looking into his Soul world without his permission.
Because of all of these variables that were unknown to these people, Kazuki seemed like a completely normal human being. One that held no power whatsoever but again this just confused all of these people as Magic was everywhere and inside of every single thing.
Kazuki was a complete anomaly to these people and therefore they were wary of him. Seeing that he was taller than most and had a large powerful build and was wrapped in furs from a beast, he came off like a mysterious expert. All sorts of strange whisperings and murmurs spread among these people as they wondered if Kazuki was some sort of hidden sage or war god from some unexplored region of space.
They all looked at Lana and her pet Sofie next to him and they wanted to try and see if they could find out anything else about Kazuki’s identity through them but Kazuki could already sense their intentions with his soul-reading ability and spoke a single sentence.
“Do it and you’re dead.”
These people nearly jumped in shock. In their eyes, it was as if Kazuki had just read their minds leading them to be even more flabbergasted. Right then and there they understood that messing about and trying to fulfill their curiosity was the quickest way to an untimely death.
They all promptly turned away and faced forward. None of them dared try anything funny.
Lana looked up at Kazuki and pulled on his arm.
“Mister Borus who are you talking to?”
Kazuki smiled.
“No one child. I’m just thinking about something else. Why don’t you play with your toy? By the way, if you say the magic word and give it an instruction, your horse will do even more interesting things.”
Lana’s eyes lit up again.
She immediately called out.
“Dance and do lots of flips!”
The horse activated and began dancing and flipping over and over again. Lana clapped with joy and a few children who were in the line watched with envy. They had never seen a toy do so many different things.
This caused a strange stir as children began arguing with their parents and demanding the same toy.
Like this, Kazuki, Lana, and her pet Sofie entered the city leaving a crowd of crying children in their wake.
