Return of the Fallen Volume 12 Chapter 34

After defeating not just Mashu but Verian as well in a single move, silence spread throughout the entire city. Half a second later, this silence was shattered when both Verian and Mashu threw up mouthfuls of blood, staining the ground around them.

Their Divine Soul weapons had nearly been destroyed and there were long fissures running up and down them. A single push and both weapons would shatter. Because of this, their souls suffered nasty wounds.

“VERIAN!”

Selda ran over in worry while shouting. Lana as well ran over in despair.

“PAPA! UNCLE!”

The guards nearby watched unmoving.

(It looks like I’ve made quite an impression on my secret admirer. They’re not trying to make a move on me.)

Just as he thought this, the guards started to slowly approach Mashu and Verian with their weapons drawn. Even now, Kazuki could not sense any emotion from them but it was clear what they were trying to do. The Guards edged closer and closer and looked as if they were about to pounce on Verian and his family when Kazuki came toward Verian and his family.

The guards immediately gave him a vicious look before retreating back to their original spots. If they attacked, even if they did not hit Kazuki, they did not wish to offend him. Kazuki played it off as if he did not know what they were up to. He casually walked over to Mashu and the others and held out a hand over the two.

His soul-reading ability was activated and he helped speed up the healing process of their souls. The many cracks on their Soul weapons began to close and fuse together at a visible rate.

Kazuki could not fully heal a Gods soul the way he could others as he was still not truly at a Gods level nor was his ability that powerful. Still, he could help enough for it to be a boon to those with such injuries.

“It seems I went a bit too far. Accept this help as a way of apology.”

Verian and Mashu looked at Kazuki in shock. Healing abilities for another’s soul was a rare gift among rare gifts. It was a power that nearly none had yet all wished for. Their reverence for Kazuki grew by the second. In their eyes, he was no longer one who boasted and told tales. If anything from this short exchange, Kazuki had undersold his own truth. They no longer doubted him and believed everything he had said.

Kazuki smiled at the two. Kazuki had fooled them both, not just them but everyone who had witnessed this exchange.

(This attack used every ounce of power in my body. If there was a second exchange it would have been me who suffered.)

Kazuki had used Chaotic energy to attack. This power was extraordinary but it was not the end all be all. It was incredibly destructive. Not only outwardly but inward as well. because Chaotic energy was so volatile and contained countless different energies. These energies basically did not get along with one another. After some distance, the energies would naturally devour one another or destroy one another in a violent explosion not handled properly.

This all meant that if the battlefield was simply a longer distance between him and his opponents. His attack would have eventually failed and basically, self-detonated. At this short range, however, Kazuki got the maximum benefit and damage. His opponents though were completely unaware of such a design flaw.

To them, Kazuki was a being that could truly stand above them.

Mashu shook his head as he slowly stood up.

“There’s no need for an apology. I was arrogant and made unfounded claims and even insulted my niece’s savior. You even helped speed up the recovery process of my and my brother’s soul. You have shown us great mercy. It is I who should apologize to you and not the other way around.”

“Maybe but I also can admit I took it too far. I have traveled countless Realms and have sought my destiny and balanced my fate to try and understand the natural laws. All these things require an infinite amount of patience and understanding yet I allowed insults to get under my skin and used a bit more power than necessary to teach you a lesson. I can only say I acted…out and I need to reflect more going forward.”

Verian, Selda, and Mashu all looked at Kazuki as if he were a wise Supreme sage. They found his words deep and they felt their own lacking qualities. They started to wonder if Kazuki could lend them aid. Kazuki of course was simply bullshitting and was trying to keep an air of mystery.

All of this was to throw the watchful gaze of the hidden figure off and keep a possible attack at bay.

An awkward silence filled the air as Mashu and the others did not know where to go from there. Even though forgiveness was thrown around, that did not just mean everything was suddenly ok. At the end of the day, they knew they wanted to seek Kazuki’s help and Kazuki knew they wanted something from him but to broach the subject after coming to blows was not right. Besides all of this, Kazuki still just wanted to get out of this place.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, Kazuki turned around. Looking at the last few cracks on their soul weapons heal, Kazuki knew their souls had recovered and they could defend themselves. The guards could only watch on. Even if they expressed zero emotion, Kazuki knew there was contempt from the hidden observer.

“I suppose I should take my leave now before we press each other any further. Goodbye.”

Kazuki felt slightly bad for these people but he did not fully understand the situation they were in. He did not wish to see these innocent people harmed but when it came down to Mei and Kosaru and these strangers, he could only choose his family. He had saved Lana and returned her to her family and wanted to help but there were too many unknowns and he had to get to Kosaru and Mei before something bad happened to them. Every second he was not at their side was a second closer to destruction.

Kazuki was about to leave when Selda called out.

“Wait, Sir Borus…Please…Please.”

The words could not come. Under the watchful gaze of the nearby guards, every plea for help became stuck in her throat.

“Mister Borus you can’t leave yet!”

Lana ran over and grabbed Kazuki’s hand.

“Little one, are you upset because I hurt your dad and uncle?”

Lana to his surprise shook her little head.

“Uncle was being mean so he deserved it. Dad didn’t deserve it but you already helped heal him and he’s fine now right? So I’m not mad at that either. Instead…Mister Borus you promised me something tasty.”

Kazuki’s eyes widened.

“Don’t tell me you already forgot. Eh…Mister Borus, you weren’t lying were you?”

Lana looked devastated. She had fully believed his tall tale about killing a monster stronger than a God but when it came to a snack she clung to it as if it concerned her very soul.

Kazuki did not know how to play this one out.

Lana was only a child and from the look in her family members’ eyes, they were truly in danger.

(Damn…Arc…Absorb the Origin energy from Lana’s pet Sofie.)

(Kazuki I already told you if I do that this thing watching from the shadows will know of my presence.)

(Just do it. Whether it knows or doesn’t, I will deal with the consequences.)

(You think you’re going to fight a being that not even I can fully detect. Something that can control all of the Gods in this city. Are you insane brat!?)

(No. If things truly become that desperate, I think there’s a way out. Though you won’t like it.)

(Knowing you, it’s most likely the shittiest way possible. I know I’m right but tell me anyway.)

(If things really do go to shit. I’ll open up a tear in CHaotic space and we’ll take a nice little field trip inside.)

Arc was annoyed but not as much as one would expect.

(Now that’s interesting. Now that you have the Gauntlet we can travel through that nightmare…That’s actually not so terrible an idea…)

Arc went quiet for a moment before asking.

(Do you really want to risk things here? The amount of energy I can get from Sofie’s medallion is minuscule. It will only narrow Kosaru’s location and show me a few things here and there. Is this not premature?)

(Yes but I don’t think I can just leave these people alone. If Kosaru and Mei are safe at the moment, I may be able to spare some time here. If not though, if they are in imminent danger, I can only leave these people behind and rush forth.)

(So this means your disregarding my opinion. I could give two shits about these people. My concerns lie with the safety of you and Kosaru. Nothing else matters.)

(You are missing the bigger picture. The nearest Star gate is dead center of this city. After this one, the nearest one could take us months if not longer to reach. Do you think this hidden force will simply let us use it?)

(Fair point brat. Clean up here to save time later.)
