Return of the Fallen Volume 12 Chapter 37

Manipulating the marinating time and cooking time, what would normally take a good 12 hours was instead done in 12 seconds. The smell of meat filled the air and gave off a rich sweet smoke aroma. Lana who was completely engrossed with her toy and playing with her pet Sofie dropped everything and came rushing over.

“Mister…That smell’s so yummy. How can something smell so good? Mama, doesn’t it smell nice?”

Selda could not hide the bit of droll collecting at the edge of her lips. She only realized when Lana pulled on her. She quickly blushed and wiped away her saliva.

“Sorry Sir Borus, I’ve shown you an unpleasant sight. My Precious Gem is right though, this Barbeque…How is it possible that it has the power to make even a God drool?”

Lana laughed at her mom drooling when Verian came over and was wiping his own drool as well. He gave Lana a tap on her head but this didn’t stop her from laughing. Instead when she saw that her father and her uncle for that matter were also drooling. Her laughter only became that much louder and wild. She had never seen such a funny sight in her life.

Her dignified father, her stern uncle, and her delicate mother all looked ridiculous at this moment and nothing like how they normally were.

Kazuki raised a hand and a table appeared nearby along with chairs.

“There’s no need to apologize. My food has this effect. It doesn’t matter if you are a God or a mortal, my food is just that good.”

Kazuki could read a person’s soul to perfect the taste and enhance his food so it would be the most delicious food they’ve ever eaten but this was only for those that he could actually use his soul reading ability on.

For Gods, his power was still lacking but he did not need his soul-reading ability to reach a God’s tongue. Instead, he used all of his culinary knowledge and experience. He had gathered the memories of hundreds of billions from many worlds he passed through in the Lower Realms. This included Earth among countless other worlds.

Not only that but he found that there were certain energies from Chaotic energy that enhanced all kinds of ingredients. Adding some of these specific energies to the food during the cooking process, caused the flavors to become that much richer and deeper. Kazuki if he wanted to, could literally turn shit into a gourmet dish.

Even though it was a small brag, Selda and the others did not think he was lying. They all wanted to dive into flavor town immediately.

“Sir Borus, can we eat now?”

Kazuki waved them toward the table.

“Shall we have a seat then?”

Lana raced toward the nearest seat and her pet Sofie stayed in her small form and landed right next to a plate and dragged it over right next to Lana’s. Lana’s uncle did not like seeing a wolf beast on the table. Even if it was only the size of one’s palm, he felt it just wasn’t right.

“Lana, you should put Sofie down. She should not be at the table.”

Sofie glared at Mashu and barked. Lana covered Sofie’s mouth and shooshed her.

“Sofie that isn’t nice. Here, you can sit in my lap.”

Lana moved Sofie to her lap and Mashu still wasn’t satisfied but Verian stopped him from complaining further.

“Big brother, we have a guest. Leave your complaints for some other time before you ruin the atmosphere.”

Mashu mubmled a bit but said ntohng else. He was more interested in the food anyway and was anxious to try it.

Mashu wasn’t the only one. As everyone else sat down, they all felt the eyes of their guards on not them but on the food. This was a complete and total shock. The guards had never taken their gaze off of them yet now they were following the bbq as if it were a priceless treasure. Only after Kazuki moved the food to the table did their gazes refocus and they snapped out of it.

A large platter of food sat in the middle of the table. It was piled high with all kinds of different meat all slow cooked to perfection or rather time manipulated in seconds. Although it was done so quickly the meat was just like it had been slow-cooked.

A sticky sauce clung to the many different types of meat as if it would never let go. It glistened in the fading sunlight. The dark sauce covering each piece was enough to entice all who bore witness to it.

With a thought, Kazuki made their plates.

“Well, let’s dig in shall we.”

Kazuki picked up a rib and showed them how to eat it properly but the moment he said to dig in, all common sense went out the window. These people were not beasts but they sure as hell ate like beasts. These people were powerful so bones gave them no problem at all as they bit through them with ease.

Sauce coated their mouths and chins and licked up every bit of it as if it were going out of style. Their taste buds seemed to explode as the savory salty meats fell apart in their mouths. They practically inhaled the food. The guards watching, for the first time since Kazuki came to this city, for a split second had a change in their facial expressions. This swiftly went back to their stoic looks but Kazuki had definitely noticed it.

Kazuki was not disappointed in everyone’s reactions. Taking a bite of food, he was reminded of Mei and Kosaru.

(I can’t think of them right now. They’re safe. Others need me.)

Mashu opened his storage ring and several bottles of wine appeared on the table. Just as he was about to pour everyone a drink, Kazuki stopped him.

“Let me.”

Mashu felt uncomfortable. He was eating the food Kazuki had prepared and now Kazuki was going to pour his wine for him. This did not seem like he had repaid Kazuki at all. Even with the many items he had bought for Kazuki throughout the many shops, it still felt uneven.

At the same time, he was not prepared to tell Kazuki no, not at this moment at least. That would just come off as rude and unnecessarily stubborn.

Mashu gave a small nod and Kazuki went to work. Just as he had enhanced the food, he could do the same for the wine. They all felt a strange power enter the wine. If this was anyone else they would not have taken a drink but with the current situation they were in and the fact that they could see no reason for Kazuki to harm them, they all gladly drank their wine.

Mashu’s eyes widened and both Verian and Selda were stunned.

“This…Sir Borus how can wine taste so good!?”

Selda held her glass in front of her and stared at it for a moment as if she couldn’t believe what she had just tasted, while Verian began to take a bite here and there and then quickly followed it up with a mouthful of wine.

“It’s just a little something extra. Does it suit your taste?”

“Does it suit my taste…I would have to be insane if this didn’t suit me. My God, this is the best wine and food I’ve ever had in the countless years I’ve lived.”

Lana got jealous.

“Me too Mama, I want to try it?”

As Lana reached for Selda’s cup, Selda quickly pulled away as if she was being asked to hand over the most precious item she’d ever received. She quickly felt embarrassed for even having such a feeling but she still wouldn’t hand it over.

“Lana, you know you’re not allowed to drink such things. You are far too young.”

“But Mama, it smells so good and I’m so thirsty.”

Selda wavered for a moment. Yes, it was completely wrong to give a child alcohol but she did not know if this would be their last day of happiness. She did not know when the observer would grow angry and swing the scythe of death over the city. She wondered if she should just let her daughter experience something she most likely will never get a chance to so she was conflicted.

“Little one, that is for grownups. How about you try this instead.”

Kazuki’s ring flashed and out came four different fruits. With a thought, he turned these fruits into juice. Creating a bit of pure ice-cold water and adding a tiny pinch of a certain spice similar to cinnamon, he gave it all a quick mix and slid it down the table where it stopped right in front of her. Not a single drop was spilled.

The drink had a few pieces of fruit still in it that were shaped like cute little animals and smelled similar to peach and orange. Lana didn’t hesitate to pick it up and drink some. Her cheeks puckered and popped as she squealed in excitement.

“SO GOOOOOOD!”
