Return of the Fallen Volume 13 Chapter 32

Following Kazuki’s command, Monsuta put strength into his legs and jumped as high as possible. Very quickly, the pair had ascended several hundred feet. Just as quickly, though, they soon began to fall back toward the ground.

Monsuta was worried as they were approaching a large group of hundreds of shriekers down below.

“Kazuki what do we do now, Kazuki?”

“Just follow exactly what I say Monsuta. Get ready to run.”

Kazuki without hesitating sliced open both of his wrists. With control over every cell in his body, he forced hundreds of gallons of blood out of his veins. Due to his fast regeneration, coming up with this amount of blood was as simple as taking a breath.

Kazuki then used his aura to separate this blood into hundreds of large orbs of blood.

Down below, the shriekers rose up on and stood on the base of their tail and reached up in anticipation. Their eyes glowed with a deadly soul devouring yellow while green mist gathered in their open mouths.

Just as they prepared to attack, Kazuki launched every single one of these blood orbs with his aura. Suddenly a hail of blood came racing down and splashed exactly where Kazuki had aimed.

With perfect accuracy, each blood orb landed on every shrieker’s arm.

*BAM!*

Monsuta landed heavily on the ground, shattering the area around him. He was terrified when he landed but the moment he landed the expected attack did not occur. Monsuta was confused but that confusion lasted for but a single instance as the sound of howling shrieks of pain echoed out.

The sight of over a hundred predators did not carry through. Instead, what happened before them was nothing less than chaos or at the very least orchestrated chaos. Each shrieker inhaled deeply the spot on their face where a nose should be. The second they got a whiff of Kauzki’s blood, they pounced.

Kazuki’s wounds had healed instantly so there was no such smell on him. The shriekers on the other hand were a different story entirely. Blood all over at least one of their arms. These shriekers followed their instincts and senses and attacked one another.

The battlefield was almost instantly soaked in greenish-yellow blood as these shriekers tore one another apart. Monsuta was shocked by the sight. His most hated and feared enemies were tearing each other apart. Ripping, clawing, biting. Everything one would consider an act of brutality was displayed before them. Monsuta did not know what to feel about this strange situation and before he could question anything, Kazuki called out to him.

“FORWARD!”

Monsuta felt a chill run down his spine as he locked eyes with one of his enemies. It was at this time that a few of these shriekers understood that they were not ripping apart prey but instead comrades.

Monsuta knew what came next and so his feet responded to Kauzki’s shout and he once more raced forward.

As he left dust behind him, the other shriekers began to shake off their frenzied mindset and snap out of it. Immediately they began to pull themselves across the ground and give chase.

From here to the cave it was a straight shot but the obstacles in the way would not allow for such. This though was exactly what Kazuki wanted. Coming down a path in front of them, there were several more enemies scattered about here and there. Even now one could see several shriekers still crawling out of the open vents in the ground.

As these monsters closed in on Monsuta and Kazuki, Kazuki began giving instructions.

“Monsuta remember, follow my words to the letter.”

Monsuta nodded and charged ahead. As he made his way down the path, two shriekers appeared in front of him.

“Now turn here!”

Monsuta stopped right in front of the two enemies and just as they pounced toward him, he turned and shifted his body toward the right before racing off again. The two enemies did not expect this sudden turn and actually fumbled over one another.

Monsuta was surprised and grew more confident. Just like this, Kazuki told Monsuta basically when to zig and when to zag. When there were just a few this worked out incredibly well. When there were more than a handful, Monsuta would jump and Kazuki would use his blood-scattering tactic once again. Sometimes he would make Monsuta run downhill and when the shriekers followed after them, the downhill terrain would completely throw off their balance and they would come tumbling down almost foolishly.

Monsuta’s eyes brightened and his confidence was soaring. His synchronization was also growing with Kazuki’s commands. The more he moved under Kauzki’s direction, the better said movement became. Smoother, faster, and more agile. It was as if he was free-flowing water.

Kazuki could see Monsuta’s fear starting to ease and he began to relax more. With his strength and speed recently improved and the fact that not a single enemy was touching him, it made sense that he was starting to overcome his fear.

(To think all he needed was to use his advantages over theirs. Monsuta has excellent balance and unlike the shrieker’s tails, his tail gives him even more balance. While they are top-heavy, he is more bottom-heavy. This allows him to turn more easily and adjust his movements much quicker. To top it off his sight, hearing and so on are much better than theirs. It makes navigating this terrain less difficult. I guess he didn’t realize these things himself because he was blinded by fear. Now though things will become different. The more he gets used to this, the more he’ll grow.)

After running around for nearly an hour, finally, the two arrived back at the cave. Monsuta moved the door and the two rushed inside before he placed it back, sealing the cave shut.

Monsuta collapsed on the ground as soon as they were enclosed inside. Kazuki thought maybe he was exhausted. In truth, there was a hint of that but for the most part, Monsuta was simply hyped. His adrenaline was pumping after overcoming a life-and-death situation and with his fear easing, he felt his blood boiling in both excitement and thrill.

“Kazuki did you see! I avoided all of them and rushed past them with all of those moves.”

Outside the cave, you could hear the howling growing as they slammed heavily into the rock door. Kazuki and Monsuta listened for a moment before Monsuta laughed wildly.

*Bwahahaha*

“They can’t get in and must feel humiliated after missing me over and over again. I showed them, that I’m not so easy anymore.”

Kazuki nodded and gave a thumbs-up.

“You did an excellent job Monsuta.”

Monsuta smiled with a large toothy grin before he gave Kazuki his own thumbs up with his tail before saying.

“Not me but we. If not for you Kazuki, I would have been caught and eaten already. You were on my back telling me exactly what to do and when to do it and I was out there moving just like you said. We make a great team don’t we?”

“We do. Though, if it were just me out there, I would be long gone. I’ll still give you the most credit on this one. Good job my friend.”

Monsuta chuckled hearing this.

“hehe, friend. We really are friends aren’t we?”

“Yep, good friends.”

Monsuta couldn’t help but wag his tail hearing this and the two shared a laugh. Working together during that disaster, Kauzki was glad he met Monsuta. Monsuta as well couldn’t remember the last time he was ever happy. Even though he had just escaped death, he wondered if this was the best day of his life.

As the two were caught in a moment of pure delight, a sound they did not want to hear or rather it was the direction of said sound that caused the blood to drain from both of their faces.

*SHRRRREEEEEEEE!*

The two went dead silent as they listened in.

*SHRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEE!*

Once again they heard a shrieker ut this sound did not come from outside the cave, but rather from deep within.

Monsuta was about to take a step but Kazuki quickly halted him with a hand sign before communicating telepathically with him.

(Stop Monsuta, that noise came from inside. No big movements.)

Monsuta’s heart was racing.

(Kazuki how can that be how can that be!? My cave was sealed shut when we came home. There must be some trick or something. This is impossible.)

Kazuki only had to think for a moment to think of how something like this could have happened.

(The vents! Monsuta, do those vents connect to any other vents or tunnels beneath the mountain?)

Monsuta’s eyes went wide in shock.

(I…I…It can’t be. This has never happened before. How would they even know to come up through them? They’ve never done so before…Why now?)

Kazuki didn’t know why now either, but there was always a first for something. There were a million reasons why they might not have come up through them before. All in all, it did not matter. First things first. Kazuki told Monsuta to stay where he was while he went around the hidden corner of the cave to enter the open section.

After peeking his head around the corner, Kazuki felt his blood run cold.
