Return of the Fallen Volume 13 Chapter 79
“Master, everything is prepared, shall we test it?”
Mefius was cold toward Editrix.
“What do you think?”
Editrix gulped hard before nodding and running to the edge of the field. He pointed toward a few soldiers and ordered them.
“That one, that one, and that one. Place them directly on top of the polar mounds.”
The soldiers moved forward and grabbed a few of the beasts around Kazuki. In total, they took 8 different beasts and placed them on the recently buried mound of ingredients. The pattern they stood in made an 8-point star on the ground.
The beasts were all frightened and confused. Kazuki as well had no clue what was happening. He had seen Editrix’s memories but this inscription, this odd ritual was nowhere to be found.
(This must be another memory Mefius held back. By taking memories from his subordinates and handing them back out only when need be, it allows him to keep all of his cards close to his chest. Smart.)
The beasts all wished to flee but the moment they were placed in position, their collars were all activated at the same time.
The smell of flesh burning as lightning and fire covered them was grotesque and sent these beasts into a panic but they could no longer move. Editrix’s nose scrunched up seeing this and he quickly raised his small green arm.
Three separate gems on his ring began to glow with purple, grey, and silver light as he called out.
“Activate!”
The power of space, time, and wind poured out from his ring and entered the ground beneath his feet. With it the ground trembled as this power travelled from one connecting point to the other. Each time it hit a connected point, the ingredients buried in the dirt resonated in one form or another and this resonation spread to the next point.
At the same time, as soon as this resonating factor took place, the soldiers jumped back as quickly as possible as rays of light erupted from below. The light surrounded the beasts and suspended them in a beam of light. Slowly they rose up into the air one at a time.
As Editrix’s power spread and traveled beneath the ground it came upon the fourth point. Once again the soldiers leaped away from the beasts as quickly as possible but one solider was a second too slow and was trapped within the suspended beam of light.
He began screaming at the top of his lungs and Editrix wore a frightened face.
“Master the man is trapped! At this rate, it could interu
“CONTINUE!”
Mefius without skipping a beat cut Editrix off and commanded him to continue.
Editirx grit his teeth before continuing. The Gerian trapped in the beam of light with the beast began to dissolve. Not just him but the beasts as well started to melt. At first, it was just fur and hide but very quickly it was layer after layer of skin. As skin fell away like slop no a tray, muscle fibers were exposed along with nerves blood, and bone.
*ARHHHHHH!*
The man released agonizing screams as his body was being reduced to a puddle of blood. More and more chunks fell away and his wings and tail fizzed with acidic-like bubbles. he cried desperately and struck at the beam of light holding him while calling out.
“MASTER! PLEASE!”
All of this was in vain.
“Shhhhh, your cries are pathetic and weak. At least die without making a whimper and save some face. To die like a newborn babe without his mother’s tit is disgusting.”
Everyone watched on in horror but none could do anything. It was already far too late.
Very quickly the man’s cries died out completely and so too did all of the beasts. An inscription formed in full on the ground and the only thing left were 9 masses of blood floating in the beams. That as well as fire energy, the primordial flame, and the remnants of these pour souls.
Kazuki was disturbed by all of this. The cruel torturous death, and the way everyone just stood there. He couldn’t blame these people as they were under Mefiu’s power but still, the scene before him was something one should never have to witness.
Editrix’a hands waved into the air and following this motion the globs of blood began to condense and darken into 9 almost black blood orbs floated in the air. Sweat poured down Editirx’s face before it vaporized. His green skin was now pale and his small and few strands of hair were scattered and hanging over his face. He looked completely and utterly exhausted but he still pushed forward.
“Master…It is ready when you are.”
Mefius gave a nod and his red eyes brightened. In response, the statue at the end of the field did the same. The fire in its eyes glew brighter in response to Mefius before orbs of light flew out of the statue’s eyes and slammed into the center of the inscription inside of the magic circle.
The moment these orbs of light hit the center of the inscription, Editirx grunted heavily before closing both of his fists tightly and pulling his hands into his chest. The 9 blood orbs then shot forth toward the center of the magic circle and fused with the light orbs the statue released from its eyes.
Kazuki could sense specific fragments from the primordial flame as if the power of the primordial being was being separated.
(At a glance this looks like something used to locate but the question is what exactly?)
Kazuki began to wonder if he had missed his window and if this was actually the so-called ritual to summon the Primordial being but he shook such thoughts away. It made no sense.
(It shouldn’t be the summoning ritual. This isn’t using Yidriss at all and it’s supposed to be the Artifact that can communicate and bring about the primordial one. No this is something else entirely but what. Using the power of time, space, and wind…What could this be exactly?)
The orbs had all fused together in a single moment and into a single object of power. At this time a final light focused on the center of the magic circle and struck the one orb that was as black as night.
*CRACK-KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!*
It was at this exact moment that a bolt of red lightning came crashing down from the sky. There had been absolutely no sign nor warning this was coming so it caused shock in everyone out of the loop. As soon as this lightning struck the orb, the orb shot up into the sky an in instant. It then flew away as if it was the lightning itself and disappeared over the horizon.
Mefius looked to his brother and called out.
“Bodock, Follow!”
Bodock said nothing. His wings opened up causing a huge gust of wind to the surroundings and he leaped into the sky. As soon as he reached a certain height a red cloud appeared beneath him and stole him away at a speed that was no less than the speeding lightning orb.
Just like that, the world became silent and all seemed to return to normal. The statue’s eyes remain alit with flames and the soldiers and servants watching looked on with admiration. They had just witnessed the gruesome death of beasts and their fellow Gerian but no longer seemed to care about that fact. They all simply looked up and watched the distance with glazed-over expressions.
Some even slowly lowered themselves onto their knees and clasped their hands together before wrapping their tails around their closed hands as if to tie them together. With this, the low muttering of prayers came from all around as they asked for Bodock’s success and praised the primordial one over and over again.
Mefius was about to speak, and Kazuki expected him to tell everyone to be silent, as that seemed to be his way but to Kazuki’s surprise, Mefius spoke almost at the same level as the prayers. Even so, his voice filled everyone’s ears as he told them.
“Very soon we will know. Very soon, our hopes will be answered. Everyone here has endured for many years, and with it came many years of tears, blood, and sacrifice. I have been harsh on you all but we all know why. We could not afford to be weak, we could not afford to be merciful, not in these trying times. Not while the Shriekers roamed our Realm. I will not go quietly into the burning green and yellow night. They will never claim victory over us so long as I still draw breath from my chest. I will bring about the new change. I will be granted the source of power, and with it, I will take back our Realm and extinguish the Shriekrs once and for all. Only then can we live in peace. Only then can we, the Gerian race, prosper.”
With this, a roaring cheer erupted from the crowd, and Mefius smiled devilishly.
Kazuki looked at him and could only see evil.
(He says it’s all for them but in order to bring about the Primordial one, you will sacrifice every last one of them.)
