Going through the equipment, everyone was excited like a kid on Christmas day. Kazuki and Danny had gotten had both gotten single-handed swords, while Shin had received a saber. Asuna replaced her worn daggers with two brand new ones made of steel. Sam, of course, had a long warhammer and both Nunully and Kimi had staffs of their own. Mei and Tsura as well got daggers of their own though if it came down to a real, life and death fight, those weapons would be abandoned and replaced with their Mangshi transformations.
On Asuna’s, Kazuki’s and Shin’s left forearm was a small shield no bigger than a dinner plate. This was attached to the forearm with a few straps. They were the quickest on their feet and the most agile. In order to maintain such movements and fight without being hindered, these were the biggest their shields could be.
Kazuki at first was gonna buy Sam a large tower shield and force him to be a tank but with his large Warhammer, there’s no way he could use both. Besides, Sam could materialize rock armor over his body that was almost as good if not better in comparison to the shields they currently have. With Sam’s large frame and magical armor, he would end up being the tank on his own anyway so a shield didn’t matter all that much for him.
Next was Danny, besides the single-handed sword he now wore at his hip, he was the only one to receive a medium-sized shield for his off-hand. Kazuki didn’t know if this would suit the new sword style Danny had in his mind but one thing he knew for sure, currently, next to Nunully, Danny would be considered the worst fighter and that was only if you didn’t count Nunully’s ice magic. Even his actual physical strength was comparable to Asuna’s and Kimi’s but Kimi had the power to take sight quite easily and Asuna’s fighting technique kept her light and nimble on her feet while also the way she used both her teleporting power and her daggers made her very deadly.
Until Danny either got better with his new sword technique or gained the ability to use ice spells, right now he could only be considered ok.
Everyone had also received a storage ring of their own. The space inside was 3X3X3 and could hold a few items. Basically, anything you could imagine that was small enough could go inside, well everything except living organisms.
Mei looked at everyone’s storage rings and felt a bit jealous but after a moment she touched the new earrings that she now wore and winced a bit. Her mother had just pierced her ears and they were still tender but after the pain eased a bit she smiled. Everyone had rings but she was different. This caused a warmness in her heart.
Kazuki chuckled a bit inwardly at how excited everyone got. They treated the items as though they were treasures but in actuality, these items were only slightly better than standard equipment. Not because Kazuki was trying to pinch pennies but instead because this was literally the best one could find in a small town so far out from the larger cities.
After testing out their equipment for a while they all decided to have some lunch. Although Kazuki Tsura and Mei had already eaten earlier with Tilly because their meal was interrupted in the middle, they felt they could still eat.
After a while, Betra’s husband served them the Inns specialty. As the name implies, a Half Hog was served bbq style.
Mei and Tsura’s eyes lit up and as they bit into the succulent and juicy meat, for a moment they felt as though their lives were complete.
Filling their stomachs with food and drink, once more the discussion went back to what they needed to do.
“So after we become adventurers we’ll leave town and we’ll actually be able to travel the open roads. Then we’ll find the last ingredient for my…memory before we finally head to the Rin mountain range and find safety for Nunully.”
Danny nodded along before he brought some bad news.
“That’s great and all but unfortunately things won’t e so easy.”
Kazuki and the rest wondered what he meant by that.
“Why, was there something wrong about my statement?”
“Not in the way your thinking, more like we’ve already run into an obstacle. You see while you were out and about running some errands I and Shin went to the Guild Hall. We were really serious about leaving and had a look to see what we would need in order to register as adventurers. Looking around and asking a few basic questions, one of the requirements is for us to record our name down. I saw someone register and one of the things they did was after recording his name they used a crystal to record his image and send it to the capitol. It seems they have some national records, at least for wanted criminals. They match names with faces as well as birthplaces. They do this so criminals can’t just start over easily and escape under the radar. Also apparently it’s used so adventurers can be held accountable if things go badly on missions, that way they know exactly who to blame. If any of us go to register, the guards will be on us in no time and Garn will be alerted of our exact location. With his power, he can teleport to us in no time and well, the outcome of that I don’t have to tell you the shit we would be in.”
A moment of doubt crossed their minds. Their plan turned to shreds before it even had a chance to set flight. The mood turned sour as they tried to figure out what to do. Kazuki couldn’t help but sigh.
*Haaa*
“I think I have a solution.”
—————————————————————————
“So you want me to get you some fake identities so you can become adventurers and scamper around the world incognito?”
“That’s what I am asking of you yes.”
Tilly eyed Kazuki’s odd-looking group. A woman and a child mixed with several teenagers and a mysterious person wearing a bronze mask. Tilly couldn’t help but be fascinated and curious about their story.
“Hmm, I think I can do this but it’s gonna cost you, hehehe.”
Kazuki was already prepared for this.
“How much are you talking about?”
Tilly waved her hand in the air.
“No no no, you can’t just show up at my house out of the blue and ask me to do a job for ya without answering a few questions for me first.”
Asuna wondered what they could be and thought out loud.
“Questions?”
“Right girly, questions. As long as Ryuta answers a few questions of mine and pays my fat fee, I will do what needs to be done, that I guarantee. So boyo, will you answer something for me?”
With Tilly’s personality, Kazuki could tell the questions would not be normal. Still, he relented anyway and said.
“Ask away.”
Tilly’s eyes lit up and she pointed at the women.
“Between these four, who have you slept with?”
Shin burst out laughing.
“Hahahaha, I love this old woman.”
For some reason, Asuna grew nervous.
Kazuki shook his head.
“None of them, next question.”
Tilly took a swig from a bottle and laughed.
“Hehehe, good. Next question, out of the four who do you want to sleep with?”
Kazuki could see where she was going with this. In the end, the old woman was just playing around and wanted to see Kazuki distressed in some way. Kazuki didn’t really care though and just answered honestly.
“All 4 if I had my way.”
Asuna and Tsura both blushed, Nunully too but it was not something one could see with her mask on. Only Kimi snorted in disdain.
“Hmpf, you wish.”
Sam as well felt pissed and gripped Kimi’s hand. Kimi could tell without him saying anything that he was upset and squeezed his hand back as though saying there’s no need to worry.
Asuna’s emotions were doing flips. On the one hand, she was happy that she was being seen like that by the one she likes but at the same time, she felt like someone had punched her in the stomach as twisting anger was boiling within her. She looked as though she wanted to rip Kazuki’s head off for looking at other girls like that and at the same time she glared at Nunully and Tsura, even Kimi got a side glance from her.
Tilly could feel the anger seeping out of Asuna and felt the effect of her words rippling out. She couldn’t help but laugh some more.
“Hahaha, not bad kid not bad. Your words are always interesting, aren’t they? Ok, I see that your losing patience and that ruins the fun. One last question answer it and I’ll do the job. Now tell me, are you an enemy of the kingdom, yes or no?”
Everyone suddenly felt a tightness in their chest and the atmosphere grew cold and quiet. Before the tension grew, however, Kazuki answered with no hesitation.
“No. My enemy is not the kingdom of Treia.”
Tilly looked deep within Kazuki’s eyes, as though she were looking for something. Whether she found something or not, a moment later she laughed out loud once more.
“Bwahahahaha, I don’t really care either way. Ok, a couple of fake identities, coming right up. Though one day I hope you come back here and tell me all about your story. I’m sure it’d be a good one.”
Tilly left the room but the tension in the air remained. Shin laughed it away.
“Hahaha, that woman sure is weird but man to lie like that directly to her face, harsh.”
Kazuki shook his head.
“I didn’t lie.”
Shin felt puzzled.
“Huh but you said Treia isn’t your enemy but we all know that’s a lie.”
“Since when did Treia become my enemy.”
Shin and a few others felt baffled by this. Danny though saw through this.
“He didn’t lie. Garn is his enemy, not the people of Treia. Though if people from Treia get in is way, only at that time would you point a sword at them or something like that. Am I right?”
Kazuki gave a slight nod.
“That’s right. I’d say that goes for anyone that gets in our way though. If they block our paths, they can only be our enemy. What do you do with things that block your path?”
Danny rubbed his chin.
“The only thing you should do, of course, remove them.”
