“So what type of reward are we talking about. Just so you know though, I have no gold or rather that’s not a currency used in the higher realms as it has no value.”
“Gold has no value? Do gods not use magic gold and the like for tools and such?”
Fake Zetsu tapped Kazuki’s compass on his chest.
“Tell me, is that made from magic gold?”
“My compass?”
Kazuki looked at it but in fact, it wasn’t. The material it was made from, Kazuki actually didn’t know. He originally thought it to be regular gold but it didn’t shine in the light the way real gold would and his compass felt as though it was a much denser metal.
“I don’t know what it’s made from.”
“It ain’t magic gold that’s for sure. It’s more ancient than that. Anyway, what reward do you think you deserve, huh? Oh and just so you know, the type of items I could give you would only do you more harm than good, seeing how weak you are.”
“Is that some kind of threat?”
Fake Zetsu smirked.
“No, not a threat, a warning. You who have no Mage core, to use a godly item, surely your body would disintegrate in the best-case scenario. In the 7 hells even if you had a Mage core, you’d have to be at least at the 6th or 7th stage to not die from my items.”
Kazuki began to contemplate before he pushed the rewards to the side for now.
“Ok, we’ll come back to that. You said you’d answer some questions of mine after I answered yours. This compass, the god mark or whatever, do you know who’s it is and why they left it?”
“How come you don’t know? Do you not remember who gifted this compass to you?”
“It was…the man who took me and my older brother in…my adoptive father…Lin. He was the kindest and most patient man I ever met but he…he was no god.”
“Hmm, adoptive you say. The way you speak, its as if he’s gone.”
Something in Kazuki’s eyes flashed and the memories within were played repeatedly. Kazuki grit his teeth in hatred.
“He abandoned us, disappeared and left me and my brother to the wolves.”
Fake Zetsu ignored the emotion in Kazuki’s voice and explained.
“Hmm, A god mark can only be given to someone special or related by blood. You say this man adopted you and abandoned you. If he truly abandoned you then there would be no godly aura on this compass. In that man’s eyes, either you are related to him by blood or your someone special to him.”
“What! that can’t be true he was gone, nowhere to be seen if that’s not abandonment then…”
Fake Zetsu’s words cut Kazuki’s train of thought short.
“The many variables and circumstances in the world. To say the cause is that one specific thing when you have yet to produce even an ounce of evidence. How can you be so sure he abandoned you? Was there no longer communication afterward, did you ever see a body? How do you know he didn’t fall down a hole somewhere, whos to say that he didn’t.”
A thousand thoughts began to swirl around inside Kazuki’s head. The only man he had ever seen as a father, he eventually hated. Lin had taught him and his older brother Kai so much. The love they felt was real but when Lin one day disappeared, they believed the lies that he had abandoned them without a second thought. A deep seeded hatred formed after that but now Kazuki learned that that might in fact not be true.
Kazuki took a deep breath and decided to put that aside for now. There was nothing he could do about that for the time being.
“Ok, thank you for that. You’ve given me something to reflect on. Next question. If I was given this so all the other gods would know that I’m under the protection of a certain god why would that god allow my Mage core to be stolen?”
“Who did you say stole your Mage core?”
“My adoptive sister. evil spawn herself, Fera.”
Fake Zetsu’s antennas rubbed his large chin in thought.
“Did she have a compass as well?”
Kazuki’s eyes went wide.
“A black one similar to mine. It was given to her…that bitch.”
“Excuse me.”
Kazuki shook his head as a sour taste built up in his mouth.
“Nothing, bad memories. My sister did indeed have one but neither of my adoptive parents was gods so how could they give someone a god mark?”
“And how do you know they weren’t gods? Did they walk around announcing it? As I recall just a little while ago you didn’t even know I or Zetsu is a god. So what makes you the expert?”
“They always used magic items. I remember that for a fact. They didn’t use magic the way you do.”
“The way I use magic but I myself am a beast, the way I use magic is already different from the way humans use magic. This alone isn’t enough, is it?”
“Maybe not but in all the years I’ve lived amongst them, I don’t ever recall them using magic without a tool of some kind. If you’re a god, why would you need a tool in the first place?”
“Hmm, you have a point. Any other questions you need this magnificent one to answer for you?”
Fake Zetsu seemed to be entertained by all of Kazuki’s weird problems and past traumas. He seemed to become more and more interested in this little human’s life.
Kazuki himself wondered as he felt he got unsatisfied answers to everything so far. He still didn’t know who the god mark was really from and now he had more questions about his adoptive father Lin.
“This compass, It’s powers are still a mystery to me. It was able to guide me to the exact location and notified me of the exact time people would be summoned to this world, that’s how I was able to get back here but It felt more like the compass then me doing that. If I can learn how to actually control it…I don’t know what I’m expecting but can you tell me anything else about this or how to better use it.”
Fake Zetsu reached out a leg and Kazuki handed his compass over. Looking it up and down, fake Zetsu opened it up and his black eyes seemed to shine.
“Well, this is interesting.”
“What is it?”
Fake Zetsu handed the compass back.
“I can tell you this right now, It wasn’t you who was controlling this compass. When the compass guided you to the exact location of summoning, no not just that, when it guided you anywhere, it wasn’t guiding you at all. This compass has to be manually pointed. Why someone would make something like this, I don’t get it but this I do know, someone else was leading you around and showing you the way. This compass is basically useless. Maybe it used to point to a certain location but it hasn’t been capable of that in a really long time.”
This news exploded like a bombshell in Kazuki’s mind.
(Someone…someone was leading me. From the beginning…has someone been watching my every move.)
Kazuki felt a grave sense of paranoia. To be capable of using a god Item and showing him the way from who knows where Kazuki couldn’t even begin to think who could do such a thing.
“Did you really think you were the one using it, hehe. If my godly items require at least a 6th or 7th stage to use do you think your compass is the exception. This at least should be good news for you though.”
“Good news, how so?”
“Does this not mean that someone out there has helped you repeatedly. Someone capable of using such an item went out of their way to help some weak human. This person either owes the god mark owner a great deal or this person looks especially on you.”
“Why wouldn’t it be the god mark owner themselves whos looking out for me? Why involve a stranger?”
“Hmm, who knows. that just seems like a lot of hassle. To give out your god mark and do all kinds of favors for the bearer of the mark, how boring and time-consuming.”
Kazuki was left more confused than ever. Someone had guided him back to this world but for what reason. He knew why he wanted to come back. He wanted revenge for his brother’s death and his stolen Mage core but now it seemed that there was another reason for his return. One that he no clue about. Kazuki wanted to take his compass and chuck it as far away as he could but the moment he gripped it, it was like the thought was blasphemous and his grip loosened. Even now, he couldn’t throw it away, he needed it.
At this moment Fake Zetsu’s eyes squinted momentarily as he saw a small dim glow emit from the compass just before Kazuki threw it. Kazuki had not seen it and a moment later Kazuki placed it back around his neck.
(Ho, now that’s interesting.)
Fake Zetsu smiled creepily and decided to remain quiet on what had just occurred.
“If that’s your final question, shall we get back to the topic of reward?”
