Return of the Fallen Volume 8 Chapter 1

“NO! STAY BACK! STAY AWAY FROM ME!”

Swinging his spear wildly, this soldier slashed and pierced at an Azirian in a panicked manner.

He managed to stab the Azirian deep within its chest but it didn’t halt the creature’s movement for even a second. The Azirian grabbed the spear still sticking in its chest and pulled the spear even deeper. In doing so, the monster pulled the soldier close enough and grabbed him by both of his arms.

The soldier was absolutely terrified and tried to struggle free but he couldn’t budge an inch. On the contrary, the Azirian squeezed the man’s arms.

*Crunch Snap*

Both arms broke like twigs in the Azirian’s grip.

“AHGGHHH! HELPPP! SOMEONE!!!”

It was only now that the soldier caught a glimpse of his surroundings. On the ground, dozens of bodies were strewn about. Many had large gashes and were torn apart like dolls. The ground was covered in slick blood and entrails. Around this soldier though should have been a small glimmer of hope. There were still plenty of soldiers still fighting left and right.

The soldier called out to them repeatedly. Surely his comrades would rescue him. Surely they would fight these devilish creatures back and pull him away from the grip of this monster. Unfortunately, all of these soldiers were themselves desperately fighting for their own survival. These soldiers were fighting two more Azirians and they were being forced back again and again. Each time another comrade would fall and each time another soldier would get injured.

The soldier in the Azirian’s grip realized that even though his comrades were in arms reach, they could do absolutely nothing to save him.

The Azirian holding him by his now broken arms, opened its mouth.

A reveal of hundreds of razor-sharp teeth and a mouth that opened far too wide and defied the laws of nature.

“NO! NOT LIKE THIS! MOTHER! BROTHER!”

The Azirian went to slam its mouth shut and eat the man’s head in one chomp but just before its teeth sunk into the man’s skull, a golden ring appeared in the sky.

The moment this golden ring appeared in the air above, the element of space gathered around it in an instant and a red dagger rushed out and descended upon this Azirian almost instantly.

The Azirian wasn’t slow though and took notice right away. A pair of fleshy wings as tough as metal sprouted from its back and guarded above its head like a shield but even with wings as tough as some metal it wasn’t enough.

*SCHINK*

A slicing sound followed by a squash erupted over the battlefield as this red dagger cut through the wings with ease. Passing through the pair of wings it penetrated the Azirian’s skull with such force that the monster’s head exploded outward like a melon.

Purplish black blood splattered all over the place and nearly got on the soldier. As soon as this blood hit the ground, there was a slight sizzling noise followed by the Azirian’s entire body falling apart in large chunks. With the head completely obliterated, the body could not be maintained and was reduced to a foul puddle of poisonous blood.

The soldier fell to the ground in shock. Looking up in the sky, he saw an angel, or at least that’s what he thought he saw.

Floating in the sky above, a gorgeous woman with fiery red hair and eyes as blue as the ocean is deep covered in red armor stood there silently.

The red dagger embedded in the ground, as though it were never there vanished and reappeared hovering above the woman’s hand.

Just as the soldier was lost in this woman’s beautiful eyes, a loud crash echoed out.

*Bang!*

The soldier snapped out of it and looked where the crash had come from. A large green monster had landed next to another one of the Azirians. At least the soldier thought it was a green monster only for a moment later he realized it was a large man wearing green armor.

The moment this large figure appeared next to the Azirian, the Azirian grew several arms and each arm stretched outward and formed blades at each end.

The Azirian rotated its body like a spinning top and the blades followed suit and resembled a storm of blades ready to shred this green armored man in a second. To everyone’s surprise, this didn’t occur. As the blades struck the green armor, they bounced off time and time again.

The man in green armor was unphased and took a simple step forward.

*BAM*

The ground splintered open and dozens of tentacles made from the ground sprung up and wrapped around each of these arms, holding the Azirian firmly in place.

The Man in green reached forward and grabbed the Azirian’s head and with a simple squeeze.

*Puk!*

The head was crushed completely. Once again before everyone’s eyes, another Azirian crumbled away into nothing more than a puddle.

The green armored man held a thumbs up to the woman in the sky and the woman in red gave a nod before her attention landed on the final Azirian. This woman in red armor though had no need to make a move as another was already near.

A woman missing a right arm, covered in a white garb made for warriors was already a short distance away from the last Azirian. The second she appeared, the Azirian stretched out several hands and tried to grab hold of her. The woman though moved swifter than an arrow and with small movements, she dodged every outstretched hand within a hair’s breadth.

As she did this, she quickly closed the gap between the two until she was a mere foot away. Raising her arm, her palm was only a few inches away from the creature’s head. The Azirian quickly covered its head with its wings in defense but just like the first Azirian, this simply would not be enough.

The woman called out in a dominant voice.

“Beam of Light!”

As soon as these words fell, a highly concentrated beam of light formed in front of her open hand and shot forward.

*TZHHHHHHHH*

The skin flaked and peeled back in an instant before turning into ash as this concentration of light burned as hot as the sun. Flesh muscle-bone, everything in a few seconds was burned away and reduced to tiny specks.

“Hmph, you nasty thing. You actually thought you could touch me with such dull movements.”

As soon as it was over, the surviving soldiers cheered and hollered.

“We’re saved! The crimson dagger and the other heroes came!”

“We made it…we actually managed to live!”

A few soft sobs could be heard and were suppressed as best as possible to try and keep up morale but it was difficult in such a situation of life and death.

While the soldiers were celebrating, the woman in the sky squinted as she observed a thin layer of energy above her. A barrier shaped like a dome covered this entire area, protecting it from the greater threat outside.

The barrier protecting this place was wearing thin like too much butter scraped across toast. The barrier was on the verge of being torn through and collapsing. The perpetrator, a purplish-black miasma eating away at it.

The woman shouted down below.

“Kimi! Heal the injured right now, we have to move! The barrier won’t last but another minute or two!”

Kimi mumbled something under her breath before raising her only arm. A radiant light spreads across the entire battlefield before raining down atop the wounded soldiers. Broken limbs started to mend and open wounds started to close. This wouldn’t be enough to heal them to full but it would at least stop bleeding and save them from life-threatening injuries.

As soon as she was done Kimi yelled up into the sky in a haughty tone.

“DONE!”

It was just in time too because the barrier at this moment started to fall apart.

Everyone quickly grabbed those that couldn’t move properly and they began to retreat. Before leaving though, Kimi pointed at the open battlefield. Light gathering in her palm. A second later she released another highly concentrated beam of light and scorched the entire battlefield. In a few seconds, she turned everybody into dust. This was necessary. If she didn’t do this, then the moment the barrier collapsed and more Azirians came around, they could turn the dead into more Azirian’s, making a never-ending army.

This process had been repeated so many times by Kimi, she had grown sick and then numb to it. Her only real comfort was when she returned to the allied fortified base.

She wrapped her arm around the man-covered n green armor and snuggled up close to him.

As the two walked through the base, several whispers spread out around them.

“Look it’s the green giant and the light fairy. The heroes of our time.”

“Shh, don’t mention light fairy. If she hears that nickname she might snap and burn out our eyes. More like demon light fairy. Just being this close I feel like my balls are gonna get boiled like eggs.”

Kimi glared at these soldiers and they quickly dispersed. She then leaned against Sam’s armor.

“Sam! Let’s go back to our tent and have some fun just the two of us. I’m tire of being around these assholes all the time.”

The green helmet covering Sam’s head peeled backward revealing Sam’s face. Sam smiled gently before shaking his head.

“You know we have to give a report first. Besides, I’m still worried about Asuna.”

Kimi’s brows furrowed.

“Just how long is she gonna act like that. Giving everyone the cold shoulder, constantly risking herself and acting like nothing matters, how annoying.”

Sam glared at Kimi and Kimi quickly knew she said far too much and apologized before Sam sighed.

*Haa*

“After Kazuki died, Nunully cried for more than a month straight and refused to eat. She almost died because of this but she grieved in that way. Asuna, she couldn’t cry. It’s like she’s holding everything in and it’s making her reckless. She’s lost something. Not only Kazuki but a part of herself is just gone. I’m her friend and I need to be there for her. I know you don’t like it but Asuna will always be like my little sister and family is something you can’t give up on. I refuse to.”

Kimi mumbled something under her breath but she didn’t utter any more complaints.
