Return of the Fallen Volume 8 Chapter 25
Making her way through the floating palace, Mila headed to its deepest parts until she arrived at a sealed golden door. Before she even approached the door, there were two guards stationed right in front of it.
As soon as they saw her, they both bowed and stepped aside. Out of everyone in this floating palace, there were only two who demanded such respect. Of course, the first person was King Garn. After him, it was actually Mila. She was Garn’s secretary, and though the title of secretary sounded small, when it came to everyone here, it meant the world.
She did everything that Garn did not. She basically ran the entire palace. Everything that would cause a hassle or annoyance to Garn, all of it fell on Mila’s shoulders. She knew this place inside and out, and everyone knew that her words were second only to Garn. The moment these two guards saw Mila approach, neither one dared stand in her way or try and stop her. If she was here, then in their minds, it meant she was handling some type of business for their King.
One of the guards spoke with absolute respect.
“Maam, are you entering the vault now?”
Mila gave a nod and said no more. The guards both wore a medallion around their necks. The moment Mila nodded, the two turned and held their medallions up toward the door.
As soon as they did this, their medallions lit up. Mila as well walked forward. A medallion made from special gold came out of her ring and had the image of a griffon hovering over a snake. There was a single spot on the sealed door that fit this medallion.
*Click*
As she set the medallion in the seal, it fit perfectly and made a small click noise. Tens of thousands of inscriptions lit up on the door, and something resounded inside like gears turning rang out.
The large vault door in front of her, instead of opening, the door became transparent and glowed with a layer of purple light on its surface. Placing the medallion around her neck, she walked into this transparent door, and it shone almost blindingly.
Mila disappeared into the vault. Even though the door was transparent, the inside could not be seen at all. The two guards knew this, but still, they were curious as to what object their King needed this time.
“It’s been a few months since the last time his Majesty had sent Mila down here. I wonder what item he wants from the vault.”
The other guard shrugged his shoulders.
“Who knows, this vault doesn’t even really hold the most valuable treasures in the first place. Our King has the most important items in his ring or scepter.”
“Really? There’s gotta be something good in there. Why else would we have to guard it?”
“Well, there should be a shit ton of Magic Beast cores and a fortune in gold. Besides that, I think the rest is just a bunch of miscellaneous items and nothing too crazy.”
The guards spoke up to here before Mila had made her exit. Both guards were quite surprised, as she had only been in there for about half a minute.
The guards saluted.
“Maam, is your business already finished? That was quick.”
Mila simply looked at the guard and said nothing. This made the guard realize his mistake, and he apologized as fast as he could.
“Maam, forgive me! It’s absolutely none of my business!”
Mila nodded.
“It’s good that you understand this. Knowing things that you shouldn’t is the swiftest way to lose your head. Keep that in mind.”
The guard apologized again, but Mila ignored him and simply turned and walked away.
The other guard jabbed his friend in the side with his elbow.
“Are you nuts!? Did you really expect her to just answer you? She’s right, you are gonna lose your head if you keep asking such dumb questions.”
A small argument ensued, but Mila was already long gone and couldn’t care less. She changed direction and headed for an upper floor. Once more, she reached a room with plenty of guards. This time, however, the room was wide open, and plenty of people were already inside. Most of these people were Mages and they were monitoring a large floating crystal in the middle of the room.
The crystal had far too many inscriptions layered upon it to count in a single breath, nor could one do it in ten thousand breaths. This large crystal was one of the power sources of this floating palace. In total, there were 8 of these crystals in 8 different rooms. Each room had Mages observing and handling them. These crystals were Garn’s Masterpiece and this Magitech left the other Mages in awe.
These crystals not only kept the palace afloat but also allowed it a shield, a barrier of sorts that could block attacks from beings at the 6th stage. Not only could it block such powerful forces, but it was also capable of blending in with the environment and hiding by bending light around its entirety. Capable of traversing more than a thousand miles in an instant with teleportation, this palace was a floating fortress. Its defensive capabilities were indeed incredible, but what really left everyone with mouths agape was its attack power.
It could launch a great assault. By firing four separate beams at once, it could display might comparable to the 6th stage. A column of blazing fire, a beam of golden white light with a beam of dark energy at its side. Add a bolt of lightning that is hotter than the sun. These four forces firing off at once can split the continent given enough time. It was a weapon never before seen in the expanding history of man.
Such a powerful weapon left no doubt about where humanity was headed. Even though they had been pushed back constantly during the war, this floating palace was like a beacon of hope for countless people. As long as we have this floating palace, we will overcome the dark forces, and humanity will shine through. This was the thought of many. This was their hope, and their King was the one responsible for it.
The fact that Garn was the one who came up with such a devastating weapon both gave them hope as well as instilled in them an undying fear. Many were learning, day by day, who Garn really was, and it terrified them. If he were simply a man at the 5th stage, things would be different. There weren’t many humans at the 5th stage, but at least there were some. If those at the same level as Garn didn’t like the way things were run, then they could step out and challenge him.
With this weapon of his, though, that is something that would no longer happen, or at least everyone here now knows the consequences of that. After Bozek tried and died, they didn’t know what the future held. All they could hope for now was that the war would be won soon and that Garn would calm down. If not this, then things ahead appeared to be dark.
Mila walked to the side of the room and placed something down and out of sight. After that, she quietly and calmly walked over to the center of the room and pulled something out before shouting at everyone in the room.
“EVERYONE! LEAVE THIS ROOM IMMEDIATELY OR DIE!”
All eyes turned to Mila, and they saw her holding a magic beast core in her hand. No one knew what was going on, and some even thought it was a poor prank at first.
Mila knew this would happen. So she did something drastic. Her eyes glowed, and her ring lit up. The very next moment, two small fireballs shot forward and struck two different people.
Fire spread on them and burned them severely, causing the two to erupt in agonizing screams.
“I SAID TO FUCKING LEAVE! IF NOT, I’LL BLOW THIS PLACE, AND WE ALL DIE TOGETHER!!”
This time, everyone knew she was serious. A few panicked screams rang out, but a few people were soldiers and Mages through and through. They aimed their weapons at Mila. Even if she was second to their King, they could not allow her to do such a thing. Several frightened people ran out while the soldiers and a few Mages surrounded her.
Mila expected this and activated several inscriptions at the center of the room. The moment she did this, a barrier formed around the large floating crystal. Since she was close enough to it, she was inside the barrier with the crystal.
All of the Mages realized what she was doing, and they themselves covered their bodies with barriers as they slowly backed away.
One of the soldiers didn’t understand and shouted at them.
“Coward Mages. Stay and fight!”
One of the Mages countered.
“You don’t get it. That barrier she just activated is meant to protect the palace’s power source. None of our magic can penetrate it. The barrier isn’t two-sided. In order to keep the palace afloat and battle-ready, power can still come out, but power can’t go in.”
The soldier still didn’t get what the Mage was saying, but Mila quickly showed what it meant. Two more fireballs materialized in front of her, and she shot them forward. They left the barrier with ease and hit two more people. As these people started to burn, more agonizing screams rang out.
The soldier finally caught on after seeing this and ordered.
“OUT OUT! We must get that barrier down right away before she hurts anyone else!”
The Mage shook his head.
“That’s something we’re not capable of. The barrier is too strong. The only one with enough power to break it is our King himself and he’s
Before this Mage finished his words, light shone and lit up the corridor. King Garn exited this light and asked.
“I’m what?”
