Return of the Fallen Volume 8 Chapter 43
Kazuki was feeling a mix of emotions at the moment. His hatred for his sister as well as a thrill in knowing that he was still growing stronger every day. As he was lost in thought, Shaila asked.
“Are you going to gather all of those pieces of rare metal or are you just going to leave them be?”
She was talking about the Orichalcum Kazuki had used during the battle. The amount he had before the battle was bigger than a house. After all, was said and done, he had used every single piece of it. A good deal of it was destroyed during combat and he honestly didn’t know how much would be left but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t pick up every single scrap he could find.
Even though this god metal had such a titanic-sounding name, it wasn’t indestructible but at the same time, it was still incredible. Kazuki didn’t even use it for its natural purpose which was for magic absorption, is insane efficiency and amplification of magic. Instead, he chucked it around with brute force and used it as if a caveman would a club or something along those lines.
It was this brute strength though that allowed him to penetrate directly through several Ancient beasts. How could Kazuki allow such an incredible treasure to lay buried here and there.
The battlefield was stretched across a little more than a thousand miles but with the help of Shaila and the others, they collected every single fragment and every chunk. The only thing Kazuki didn’t pick up was the god metal he had given to Shaila and the others. During the battle when they had to fight up close and personal, it was this armor that bought them extra time. Though it could be destroyed by their enemies, it still took several seconds for the enemy to get through. That may not sound like much time but several seconds could be hundreds or even thousands of blows exchanged during that time.
One who has such armor and one who doesn’t, the advantage and disadvantages were obvious.
Kazuki waved a hand and fixed the armor and the three stored it away.
All in all, the amount of god metal that Kazuki managed to gather was abysmally small compared to what he started with. The amount he had now, equated to around the size of a large boulder, and that was it. The rest was destroyed, mainly by Dreunz’s large suns.
Kazuki rubbed his storage ring with a bit of regret.
(After all of that fighting and all I get is Dreunz’s ring which I can’t access, along with his damaged beast core. Meanwhile, I lost so much god metal.)
Kazuki could only bitch up to this point. In the end, he walked away with his life as well as his comrade’s lives. This as well could be considered quite lucky. If Dreunz hadn’t lost his shit and was able to think more clearly, he would have recognized that his barrier was being eaten away by the toxic rain that was filled to the brim with pure magical energy. This rain was like poison as it fell and was damaging his barrier nonstop.
Then Kazuki used a single Aura shot and damaged it further. Danny’s constant attacks ripped at it more and more and Shaila and the rest kept attacking nonstop. Once his barrier was destroyed, it would have been smart to retreat right away but instead, he got close enough for Kazuki to touch him. In that range, Kazuki was able to use his new fused attack and it was game over at that point.
Kazuki understood why Dreunz mind was unstable. Thinking about how he himself was when he first lost his brother. The devastation it causes on one’s mind and Dreunz suffered such a thing back to back. First with his grandson and then a mere two weeks later with the death of his daughter, right in front of him as well.
Kazuki thought about how lucky he was to have killed both Dreunz’s grandson and daughter so closely to one another.
(If I didn’t kill them back to back like that, he wouldn’t have been clouded by such hatred and he would have been able to finish me easily. Had he simply reformed his barrier before he got so close to me and attacked, It would be me dead instead of him.)
The moment Kazuki thought this far a new thought appeared in his head.
(It was his blind hatred that had him make such a simple mistake and it was a single mistake which gave me his enemy an opportunity to destroy him…Such a strong emotion was the thing that sealed his fate and doomed him……My hatred for my sister…For my mother…Am I dooming myself as well…?)
Kazuki shook such thoughts out of his mind.
(I and Dreunz are not the same. His hatred doomed him mine will not lead me to my death. I can control such anger and rage. I will not allow it to cloud my thoughts. I cannot allow it to control me!)
Thinking about Fera, Kazuki realized where this path has led him and though he didn’t like it, he knew it was necessary. The difference between he and Dreunz, Dreuz before Kazuki killed any of his family, was sent to kill Kazuki for the simple fact that he, Shaila, and the others should not be allowed to exist. Dreunz followed orders, while Kazuki just wanted to survive and protect those he cared for.
Fera would never allow Kazuki to live in peace and would always come to take his life. Now though it wasn’t simply his life she was after. Glacious and Etora had both stood in her path to protect him and therefore became her enemies as well. Now she would not let them go either. As long as Fera lives, Kazuki would always be forced to look over his shoulder no matter where he went.
Even if he somehow magically found a way to no longer hate both her and his mother. Still, they had to die. Not just for him but to prevent the full destruction of the Feya continent and everyone on it.
After everything was collected, Sasai wondered over. He looked back and forth between Danny and Kazuki and whispered to Kazuki.
“Kazuki…The weapon you made for Danny…Could you make something that matches me as well?”
Danny though had heard this clearly, everyone did, and Shaila immediately went into teasing mode.
“Eh eh eh, did I hear correctly? Did the little snake really just say he wanted a weapon like Danny’s? I thought his saber was simply a toy in your eye. I must have heard wrong. There’s no way the great snake could or would ever use a human weapon!”
A slight red filled Sasai’s cheeks. Whether it be because of anger, embarrassment, or both, no one could say for sure but Sasai’s yell certainly leant itself to the first option.
“I WAS WRONG OK!”
Shaila and the others became quiet. It was a rare thing for Sasai to admit anything, let alone a declaration of him being wrong. Shaila immediately placed a hand over his forehead to check his temperature.
“Hmm, you don’t seem sick so what could be going through your head I wonder?”
Sasai embarrassingly slapped her hand away but this just made Shaila wish to tease him anymore. Kazuki though interrupted her antics.
“Sasai, You did act like Danny’s weapon was useless earlier but now you’ve changed your mind. After our fight, I can guess the reason but don’t you Ancient beasts tend to look down on other Ancient beasts when they use human things. Isn’t it like a sense of pride for you all? Would it really be ok to have such a thing?”
Sasai shook his head before yelling the opposite.
“Of course it’s embarrassing. It’s not like I wish to be looked down upon but…but…I’m still too weak.”
Sasai turned around and allowed no one to see his expression but they all understood as he continued.
“This fight, the one before. Even as my strength improves by leaps and bounds, the enemy as well, only gets stronger and stronger. At this rate, I will be nothing more than a burden and I might end up being the cause of not only my death but everyone else as well. I won’t…Even if it means my pride is in the dirt, I won’t be the reason my brother or sister is harmed or worse. I can already put my life on the life but that still isn’t enough, I see that. Watching the way Danny uses his saber, even though he is the weakest of us all, he can do much more than I. In order to have every advantage…Damn my pride if that’s what it takes. Therefore, KAZUKI! I WANT A HUMAN WEAPON!”
Shaila and Tozu were both touched by this. Shaila couldn’t help but walk over and embarrass Sasai. Sasai at first found this uncomfortable and tried to squirm out of it but then Tozu came over as well and embraced them both. Lifting the two off the ground together in a big warm hug, Tozu smiled ear to ear.
“I’m the luckiest person in all the world. To have such a loyal little brother as well as a strong and beautiful wife. Nothing is better than this feeling.”
Shaila giggled while Sasai gave up and allowed the double embrace.
