Return of the Fallen Volume 8 Chapter 59
As the crystals continued to shine, they transmitted a live video feed directly in front of Garn. As soon as the image showed up in front of him, Garn swallowed hard.
The displayed video showed Glacious obviously but standing not too far away from him were two large figures. These two figures, Garn recognized them immediately.
(King of the east and King of the south! These two, for them to appear in front of Glacious, it couldn’t be.)
Watching the video, Garn understood right away that the two came with one intention and one intention only.
A smile crept upon Garn’s face.
(The animals have finally decided to kill one another. Glacious is powerful but King Azar and King Berus are both at the 7th stage just as he is. Together they will surely kill him. Good…this is beyond what I could have imagined. It’s no wonder he had to pull his attention away from here and focus it elsewhere. Glacious will die, it’s guaranteed at this point. This means I no longer need fear retribution. Nunully and the others, their lives are now forfeit.)
King Garn quickly adjusted the plan in his head. He no longer needed to make contingencies for Glacious.
(I can already see how things will play out. The two beast kings have come to deal with Glaucous. Neither one of them has any such thing as loyalty. Once they slay the dragon, surely they will no longer have any reason to be allies. They will turn on one another in no time and from there two will be reduced to one. If they both ki8lled each other that would be for the best but I doubt things will go so smoothly. Once there is one left, he will no doubt have serious injuries ad those will require proper time to heal. This should give me enough time to finish trap the Miasma and starve it out in the desert. Everything else, I can figure it all out and it will be dealt with accordingly.)
Garn thought about the obstacles that could still get in his way. After he kills Nunully and the rest, that left the last person from their group that could be troublesome, Etora. Garn at first considered the possibility of him coming here but he pushed that thought aside as he understood something.
(With Glacious fighting the two kings, there is a high chance, the fake Fera’s will be watching or dealing with Etora. He can handle one but two is a different matter entirely. If things go well, even he will fall. As for Fera, once the others are dead, the Miasma gone and the Azirian’s destroyed, she should have no more reason to be here. Even if she still tries to remain, I have something for her.)
Garn’s plan adjusted slightly in his head and he returned his attention to Asuna and the others. All of this information he received from his magic crystals, allowed Garn to confirm what needed to be confirmed and to work out a plan in seconds.
Looking down at the half-breed elf and the foolish traitors at her side, Garn smirked.
Stamping his scepter on the ground, the flow of energy was regulated once more between the barrier and the weapons. As soon as the weapons were charged, he didn’t hesitate and fired it at the city in front of him.
A blazing inferno superheated and became a beam of fire energy as it raced toward the city with enough power to reduce it to a smoldering ruin.
*FWHOOOSH!*
Asuna and the others expected this from the beginning yet to Garn’s surprise, none of them tried to flee.
(So they’ve given up and have accepted death. Cowards die as cowards live.)
*BAM TZzzZzt!*
Just as the beam of fire energy was about to remove this city from the face of the world, the flames crashed into a large magic barrier. Thousands of inscriptions along the city wall glowed with golden light. The barrier protected the wall and the fire scattered and spread out before they were diminished and became nothing more than a lick of flames and then nothing more than residual heat.
When Glacious saw this he understood right away.
(So the little king Brian really has betrayed me. To actually go against me and side with these fools, I gave him far too much credit. This type of barrier that he’s developed is indeed something that can endure but against my ultimate weapon, it is nothing more than a flawed gadget. My magitech is far superior to his and he will know it soon enough.)
Garn had only used fire to attack the city. His intention was to burn it in one go to both kill the millions that lie within its walls as well as attract the Miasma with a grand force of magical energy. He needn’t hold back though. Whether the people were burned by flames or reduced to dust with lightning, it didn’t matter. In the end, he only needed them to be dead and needed enough magical energy to guide the Miasma in this direction.
Garn didn’t hold back this time. All at once, his floating palace released plasma-like energy as the power of fire, lightning, light, and darkness came raining down side by side. This magic wasn’t fused but rather fired at the same time next to each other. Garn’s mind worked in an extraordinary manner when it came to magic. This attack, if Kazuki observed it, he would notice that it was in ways similar to his own special attack that fused different energies. His magic, when fused, fed off one another and in doing so became amplified in numerous ways.
Garn could do no such thing as fuse magic but he understood what would happen when different energies with equal power came in close proximity of one another. A strange amplification effect would happen. Garn’s understanding came up to this point and it was this thinking that allowed his floating palace to deal out damage equivalent to a 6th stage being.
This powerful beam tore the wind apart and evaporated any and all moisture in the air.
*BANG!*
Once more the barrier blocked the attack but this time it was different. The energy attack didn’t spread out, nor did it diminish. Instead, it Garn had made it so this attack concentrated on a single point.
The barrier wobbled and warped. It flexed inward by a dangerous degree before flexing outward slightly and bouncing back.
*SNAP! CRACK! CHHH!*
Sounds of something shattering and breaking resounded through the city by the hundreds. The barrier though held. Asuna looked back into the city. A plague of screams did not ring out as Asuna and everyone else had actually emptied the entire city a while ago. Instead of screaming people, what was left inside was thousand upon thousands of large boulder-sized elemental, and mana crystals.
These crystals were scattered all over the empty city in specific spots and thousands of inscriptions were carved out around them. As Garn’s attack continued to pour onto the barrier relentlessly, dozens of glowing crystals shattered and broke. They were reduced to dust in an instant.
Asuna called out to Garn.
“Garn! Don’t do this! These people are innocent!”
The plasma beam did not relent and continued to warp the barrier.
Asuna called out once more.
“How can you be so cowardly!? How can you consider yourself a King of the people! You’re nothing more than an insane monster!”
Garn took offense to that.
“Shut up! An insane monster you say. I am a merciful king. These peasants are nothing more than an eyesore and must be removed from the equation if humanity is to survive this. Their deaths are for the benefit of all. A few million deaths here and there is nothing. They should count themselves lucky that I am the one killing them in one fell swoop instead of being eaten and turned by the Azirian’s or have all of their life drained by the Miasma! This is mercy!”
Asuna shook her head.
“No, this is the opposite. You are condemning them before anything and not giving a single one a chance. You don’t know that the Azirian’s or the Miasma will get to them and are assuming and speculating wildly. The Miasma is hundreds of miles away, it has no reason to come this way.”
“Hmph, what do you know Asuna? It is on a direct path to this city. I know they will be done in by the Azirian’s and the Miasma because I am the one leading the Miasma here. Like a little rat being led by its nose, I have made this city and all of its inhabitants the cheese. Their only choice from the beginning was to die, I am simply speeding up the inevitable process.”
Hearing this Asuna spoke no more. A small insignificant flash of something reflected into the corner of her eye. A small recording crystal hovered silently in the distance.
(Good, with a few simple words, he’s said it himself. King Brian was right, with enough push, Garn’s ego would do the work for us. Now the world will know what he’s done and what a monster he is.)
