Return of the Fallen Volume 8 Chapter 60
Asuna’s pushing and insults caused Garn to freely admit what he has done and what he was still planning to do. Up in the sky, a recording crystal captured all of this.
The moment Bozek had gotten into contact with King Brian, he only managed to say a few things and didn’t even get the chance to warn King Brian before the connection was terminated. However, King Brian was indeed clever and could put things together. Seeing Bozek still alive and realizing that it wasn’t he that destroyed the first city in the Patar desert but King Garn instead, Brian quickly began to put things together.
When it came to Magitech, Garn held the slight advantage with Brian right behind him. However, when it came to tactics and understanding the way people’s minds worked, Brian was far above Garn in this regard. When Garn tried to kill King Brian for not listening to him, Brian learned then and there that Garn had become unhinged and started to plot.
When Bozek got in contact with him when he was supposedly killed, Brian could see where things were going. Thinking about why Garn would burn a city full of people, taking into account the Miasma’s direct movements afterward, and knowing what type of person Garn was, Brian could see behind the curtain. He put himself in Garn’s position and model his mindset after Garn’s to try and think and understand the way Garn’s mind works.
After that, he began to plan for many scenarios in a way Garn would enact them. Knowing how he would plan things out, King Brian then did the opposite and thought about the many ways to counter Garn. In conclusion, with the known variables, Brian figured there were about a dozen different ways things would play out. Afterward, he himself called upon Nunully.
Since Nunully had the greatest connection to Glacious, Brian considered her as one of the most important pieces. He knew once she and Asuna found out about what Garn was doing, they would stand up and try and block him. Asuna was one who could not stand injustices and Nunully was one who loathed Garn to her core. She knew all too well what it felt like to be hunted down by Garn and Brian knew that if Garn went to another city to destroy it, Nunully would step in for this would be the perfect opportunity for her to get revenge.
He understood that if Nunully stepped in, all she would need to do is stay in his way and Garn would naturally try and attack her. When that happens, Glacious would o doubt step in to defend her, killing Garn in the process. Nunully could get her revenge, simply by standing in Garn’s way.
While Garn was watching Glaicous earlier, King Brian was using his own observing crystals to observe and record all of Garn’s movements.
Right at this very moment, Brian was sitting in his throne room watching everything play out, just as he predicted it would. Around the mountain base, he occupied as well as around several other countries, tens of thousands of these magic crystals displayed Garn’s actions to the world. Million’s of people watched in horror as the one they once called a hero and now King, not only admit his wrongdoings of slaughtering millions but also his current attempt to destroy a city that was presumably full of innocent people.
(Garn, your arrogance and madness have pushed you to the edge and because of that you have harmed far too many to count. To win this war against the Miasma as well as against the Azirian’s, I believed you were needed but now it’s become clear. If you continue to exist, it will be humanity that dies at your own hand. For things to come to a head like this at this time is terrible. Winning will not be easy with you gone but as long as we all come together after you’re gone, we will survive…We will win.)
Garn at this time had no clue about any of this and continued to fire his weapon at the city in front of him. Even if he did know, it’s not like it would deter him from continuing. He was dead set on destroying this city and anybody within its walls. He had to, he needed to. In order to lead the Miasma, this was a necessity. Damn the lives that would be sacrificed and damn anyone else who got in his way.
The barrier covering the city continued to wobble and warp chaotically. Within the city, the elemental crystals and mana crystals shattered and were reduced to dust by the dozens. An entire kingdom’s worth of riches and treasures were being destroyed in seconds under the intense drain the barrier required to continue to function.
This though wouldn’t last for long. It couldn’t last. The overwhelming power from the floating palace was devastating and equaled the strength of a 6th stage being. A being that could literally crack open the continent and yet this single barrier was the only resistance in its path. This magic barrier was one invented by King Brian. Its defense was mighty but to keep it running was costly.
Dozens more exploded and shattered and then hundreds and then thousands. As these crystals broke to pieces one after another, Garn smiled deep within his palace as he could sense the barrier starting to fail.
(One more push and this city will be gone.)
Garn gathered more energy in his palace and focused the plasma energy with pinpoint accuracy. Stamping his scepter on the floor, the energy in his palace was depleted by more than a third in an instant. In return, the attack grew bigger and bigger a more energy was fed into it.
The warping barrier flexed outward and inward with an unnatural speed at this time and everyone knew what was coming.
Asuna roared at Nunully and the others.
“IT’S BREAKING! SCATTER!”
The moment she said this, everyone took to either the sky or ground, and using their fastest speed possible, they distanced themselves from the city in one go. Just as they cleared the range of the city, the barrier could hold no more. All at once, the remaining thousand or so crystals powering the barrier exploded, and the entire barrier around the city fell apart under the palaces plasma beam.
This beam of energy hit the city and in a fraction of a second, the entire city was vaporized.
A huge blinding white light took over the ground and sky, covering every inch, and every nook and cranny. No one could see anything in such a light and for a split second, there was absolute silence as this radiant light came a fraction of a second before the actual explosion. However, as soon as this fraction of time passed, a powerful explosion did in fact come and the sound finally caught up.
*BOOOOOOOOOOOM!!*
The ground trembled violently and cracked open for nearly a hundred miles in every direction. Zetrazz had most of his attention on Glacious’s battle but this explosion stole his interest for a few seconds. Seeing the damage as well as finding that no one died, he became less interested just as quickly and returned his attention to more interesting things.
Zetrazz wasn’t the only eye to catch what had just happened. The magic crystal in the sky, showing millions around the Feya continent what was happening, also received all of this bright light and everyone who was watching was nearly blinded by such an unfathomable amount of light.
Many shielded their eyes in time if they were lucky. If not, then they were currently suffering from blurred vision and migraines galore. A moment later, the light which consumed the sky faded and the world returned to normal, well almost normal.
The city which took up well over a hundred miles of space was now no more. In its place, there were no ruins, no debris. Instead, what was left was a big gaping hole as if a meteor had fallen from the heavens with an undying rage.
Looking upon this scene, if one hadn’t known that there was a city here, one would never have known of its existence at all. Luckily, King Brian had seen something like this coming and had the mind to evacuate every citizen in the city a near week beforehand. The setup was a pain in the ass and beyond stressful, to say the least, but with the help of Triska and Shin, who helped lay most of the inscriptions, King Brian managed to teleport everyone away a few hundred at a time.
Most of them were moved to the mountain base. King Brian had done this right under King Garn’s nose. Had Garn been more focused and not off his rocker, he may have noticed the mass exodus. Because he was so focused on destruction though, he had failed to catch wind of anything. So when he destroyed the city just now, a large arrogant smile was stretched across his face, that is until he noticed something strange.
