Return of the Fallen Volume 8 Chapter 7

After the mountain base teleported to the Patar desert and everyone was accounted for, things got unreasonably busy.

Every Mage, whether they be available or not, had to drop whatever they were doing and rush to the bottom of the base.

Thousands of Mages, not only from the three great kingdoms but from the smaller ones as well, had all come whether they wished to or not, all in the name of defending humanity.

These Mages, with their magic tools in hand, had a certain job to do the moment the base had been moved.

First, they quickly wielded their staffs or rings or whatever helped them with magic and they proceeded to flatten the land for a few surrounding miles. After that, they then proceeded to carve hundreds of thousands of inscriptions into the ground. Forming hundreds of large Magic circles, they made teleportation gates.

These gates were the reason the combined armies of the Feya continent could manage thus far. These teleportation gates would move troops and equipment directly from the base to the front lines. To power all of these gates, in turn, took tens of thousands of mana crystals every single day. Keeping these operational was literally fortunes disappearing draining away to keep the fight going.

These gates connected to not only this mountain base but also to the front line as well as every major city on the Feya continent. At every major city, one would see lines stretched onward for miles of men and women, young and old, signing up for battle or being drafted. Equipment for most was a set of leather armor. Those who had swords were well off or inherited a family heirloom for combat. Those without swords were issued whatever was not in use. Usually something old and dull, sometimes a tool from the farm, or worse off, there would be no weapon at all and a Mage would be forced to make a weapon for you out of solid rock or wood. Oftentimes clubs were the way to go but using such things was still difficult for noobs.

Not only was equipment getting more and more scarce, but sometimes it was so bad that one would be forced to simply pick up whatever a fallen comrade had dropped upon the time of their death.

As people joined the fight, they were all scanned with magic. This was done to determine if they had any talent for magic or if they could endure getting Inscription tattoos. What had once been a secret of each kingdom and would only be given out to the most loyal of soldiers was now given away like candy to those that could endure it. The leaders of these countries no longer had the luxury of looking down on peasants and those they deemed lesser. Anyone that could endure an inscription tattoo was another body for the battlefield that could do more than a regular soldier.

The moment these Gates were built, loads of mana crystals were placed around them and they all started to light up at once.

Flashes of light came continuously as new and fresh faces appeared constantly, along with food and other necessary supplies. The moment these new recruits appeared, shouts rang across the base and they were pulled and shoved in certain directions. The soldiers that had been at this base for a while, the commanders, had no time for these young ducks who looked about with confusion and awe.

“Move the fuck out of the way!”

“Get to the back and keep your shit together unless you want your ass kicked!”

“Move your asses!”

As these new soldiers came in, above in the sky, constant booms rang out as people flew away at incredible speeds. These new recruits, many of them came from smaller countries, and from those countries, they came from even smaller villages. Seeing people actually flying about and using magic was something many had never experienced or witnessed. These people came from the countryside. Most of the time, if one could actually use magic, they would leave such backwater places as fast as possible for a better life in the city.

On the rare occasion, that someone could use magic and remain in the countryside, it was because they had very little talent with magic and no real prospects outside of their villages. Still, such people would become chiefs or village healers and so forth. The kind of magic they could do was minuscule in comparison to those who used it and became a real mage.

So to see people actually flying in the sky, to see these teleportation gates that constantly lit up and brought in more people and equipment, it was incredible to these people, to say the least.

One such group of young men and women were shepherded off to the side, where a large man and a small woman held clipboards and took information.

The woman sitting at a desk out in the open like this was an odd sight but as no one said anything about it it was accepted as normal. The woman scanned over a sheet of paper and without even lifting her head she barked at a new recruit.

“Name, strength!?”

The young man she shouted at jumped with a start before giving his name.

“Scatey. Um for strength I don’t understand what you mean.”

The woman raised her head in annoyance.

“Are you serious, do we really have another batch of needle-dick greenhorns who can’t answer simple questions? Strength is strength! Are you a Mage, if not do you have a Mage core at all, If not then can you fight, and if you can then step into the circle with the man to my left and duel him. If you can land a blow you will most likely receive an inscription tattoo. If you have no talents and can’t fight or use magic then declare it now and go to the other line and get the fuck out of the way!”

The young man grew angry at how rude this woman was. Slapping his chest he shouted.

“Bitch I can fight anybody Just you watch!”

The woman heard this all the time and she didn’t give a shit. Instead, she simply pointed to the man to her left and the two men stepped into a circle with one another.

The large man had a sword at his waist. He took it out and tossed it to the greenhorn.

“Pick it up. You can try and kill me if you want. If you land a blow at all you pass.”

The young man looked at the other recruits behind him and smirked.

“Watch this.”

He then picked up the sword.

“Here I come!”

The young man charged ahead stupidly and swung with a wide slash. The soldier didn’t even need to dodge. He simply stepped in faster than the slash and punched the young man directly in the nose.

*Crunch*

The nose clearly broke as a squirt of blood shot out of his nose and he flew back in the air.

*Thud*

The young man landed hard on his back and the air was forced out of his lungs. He couldn’t move. The soldier walked over and casually picked up his sword before placing it back into its sheath.

The woman shook her head.

“A needle dick is a needle dick in the end.”

Ignoring the stares from the other recruits, she called out.

“NEXT AND YOU ALL HEARD ME THE FIRST TIME SO DON’T MAKE ME REPEAT MYSELF! NAME AND STRENGTH!”

The recruits gulped hard before they marched forward with stiff motions and answered the woman exactly how she wished.

Off in another line, a few more hopefuls were chatting and laughing at the knocked-out man in the other line. Just as they were talking out of their asses, the sky boomed once more.

Looking upward, they caught Sam, Kimi, and Asuna flying away, disappearing into the distance. One of the new recruits recognized Asuna and the other two and got excited.

“That was the crimson daggers and the light fairy along with the green knight. I actually got to see those legends with my own eyes.”

A few of the other recruits looked at him with both curiosity and oddness and one couldn’t help but ask.

“Green knight, crimson daggers, who are they?”

A soldier overheard this and chimed in.

“You country bumpkin! Have you not heard about any of the battles that have taken place? Many people are gaining fame and that trio that just flew away is among them. The crimson daggers is the name given to a gorgeous fiery redhead. She uses the element of space to not only teleport herself and her weapons but she can also fly by locking space around her and moving forward through it. Then there’s the light fairy, though some would actually call her the light demon or something along those lines because of her temper. She can channel light and bend it in such a way that the light becomes so focused and hot it can melt metal like it’s nothing. The other one wears a green suit of armor and becomes like a wrecking ball. His whole body is hard like a shield and as he runs forward he bashes into you like a demonic elephant. He crushes basically anything he runs into.”

The soldier said all of this with a prideful tone but one of the recruits didn’t think too much of them.

“So one can melt some stuff and another can bash things. What’s so great about that?”

The soldier could see this recruit was an idiot.

“What would you know of their abilities? The fact that they reached the Mind-Body stage, and are at the 4th rank, what the hell could you possibly know? Not only have they reached such a level but they all did it within a few years of learning magic. Who else in the world can compare to such talented individuals.”

The new recruit and the others found this statement to be insane.

“Impossible, how can they reach the 4th stage after only training in the ways of magic for a couple of years? That makes no sense.”

The soldier shook his head.

“That’s why you country bumpkins know nothing. Those three aren’t alone, there’s also the Phantom Knight, and believe it or not, he’s already reached the 5th stage. The four of them can do what others can not. They are heroes of our time. They are the summoned ones.”
