Return of the Fallen Volume 9 Chapter 69

Silence filled the Grand Hall. Danny couldn’t think properly. Detra had just teased him seconds ago and now her following words threw him for a loop. She said Kazuki was not at the 6th stage but instead at the 7th. What did this mean?

(Is something like that possible even possible? The path of magic is an arduous task, to say the least. Most that go down the road of power, will never get past the Elemental stage. They can train and absorb the purest of energy. They can study and take every medicine and use special treasures like the Karada cauldron but still never break into the 3rd stage. Even with 200 years of extended life, even with multiple lifetimes, and untold advantages, most can never become a dominant figure that can stand with the true powerhouses. You need more than talent, you need comprehension and understanding at a level considered just out of reach. A will that burns like a thousand suns and an ever-enduring mind, body, and soul. All of these things Kazuki has and I can see him reaching the 6th stage after some struggle but to touch the apex of power in this world and to reach it so soon, I never could have predicted this.)

Danny took a moment to clear his thoughts.

(If she truly is not messing with me, then this is amazing. I knew Kazuki was someone who completely defied logic but to this extent. This is almost surreal.)

Danny looked at Detra. He cautiously observed her face and body movement, trying to find even the slightest hint of a lie in her expression but she only smiled.

“Your friend is much more than I expected. Entering the 7th stage is not something anyone can do. Out of the billions of humans who have come in gone throughout humanity’s short history on Gordonia, I do believe Kazuki is only the 5th human to have reached this level. In terms of speed, he is most certainly the fastest by thousands of years. When you bragged about him, I thought you were simply desperate to save everyone here. Even after looking into your past and observing him, he only seemed more talented and clever than the other insec…er, humans but I will admit I looked down on him too much.”

Detra held out her smooth hand, waiting for Danny to take it.

Danny though was still stuck in his own head.

“Well, don’t tell me you’ve changed your mind?”

Danny swiftly snapped out of it and shook Detra’s hand.

“No no, please. The deal, there’s no way I would change my mind.”

With a simple handshake, the two trusted one another’s word or so it seemed. In actuality though, Detra would make sure Danny kept his word no matter what. If Danny could not convince Kazuki to search the higher realms for her, Detra already knew what she would do. After looking into Danny’s past, she saw how Kazuki had gone from a completely cold killer to a semi-cold killer. He would still kill without mercy but it was obvious that he was no longer so closed. Through Danny’s past, she had witnessed Kazuki’s heart begin to warm and soften to both Nunully and Asuna.

Not only the two women but his friends as well. Detra could see he cared for them. She had seen Kazuki risk his life for them all on several occasions and some of those situations were before he had formed a single meaningful bond with any of them.

(If Kazuki is willing to risk life and limb for strangers, what would he do if his loved ones were threatened.)

A devious smile flashed upon Detra’s face for a fraction of a second before it vanished.

(If Danny does not convince him, It will be simple enough to take hold of what’s most precious to him. The females will be held hostage and I will force him to do my work, otherwise, I will crush all that he holds dear.)

Detra grew excited thinking about the future and an image of her husband appeared in her mind.

(It shouldn’t be too much longer now. When can I see you again husband, a thousand, ten thousand years? I’ve waited so long already, just a little bit more and we will be reunited forever.)

Even without seeing Detra’s expression, Danny understood how Titan’s acted. In his head, he was already thinking of ways to deal with Detra if things were to go south later on. Never before would he ever dare to think of ways to go against a Titan but things were different now. Now that he knew Kazuki was at the 7th stage, and given Kazuki’s ability, if Danny and Kazuki thought of something together, Danny was confident that Kazuki could handle things.

Not only was he confident but more than that, after everything they’ve been through and now Kazuki going beyond even what Danny could predict, Danny had 100% belief in Kazuki.

“Detra, now that you’ve confirmed Kazuki’s strength, shall we complete the first part of the deal.”

Detra could not hide her smile. She was in the greatest of moods.

“Of course.”

Without another word, both her eyes began to glow with purple light. Before another thought could form, the purple light grew as bright as a blazing purple sun. The very next moment…

*FLASH*

The Grand Hall was completely emptied of people. The remaining 3000 or so soldiers, along with Danny and his friends and King Brian, in an instant were teleported away.

The light around Danny dulled and his vision returned. Looking around he was surprised to see that he and everyone else had been teleported directly to the edge of the Patar desert where the rest of the survivors were teleported to earlier.

“This is where the desert meets the open plains.”

Detra nodded.

“For someone so clever you sure look dumb most of the time. My senses cover more than you know. Did you think someone messing with the element of Space so many times in a row would go unnoticed by me? The very first transfer that Asuna girl did, I took notice of it and took a look.”

Danny came to a realization and anger began to well up within him.

“Does this mean you were observing us from the start?”

“Yes, you all and my sons, Fera, and thousands of other places all at once. I told you, I watch over this world. Why do you ask?”

(So the entire time we were panicking, the whole time everyone thought they were going to die, she was watching it. To hold so much power that you could save us all with no effort and yet you simply watch as if we are your entertainment. This woman, this Titan is no different from her sons. All of them are psychos.)

Danny put on a fake smile.

“No reason, I was just curious, that’s all.”

Detra knew he was lying but there was no point in calling him out. Detra slowly began to ascend to the sky.

“With this, I have held up my end of the agreement. You and all of your little friends have been saved and taken away from danger. From here, you are on your own. I will return later. You should have convinced Kazuki by then, if not…I do not see much hope for those that break a deal with me.”

Detra’s tone became cold with the end of her sentence and her aura spread out. Danny was immediately forced to his knees and he could feel that same suffocating feeling again. It felt as if his soul would shatter at any moment and his vision started to darken. Just when he thought he might actually die, Detra pulled her aura back and chuckled.

“Goodbye Danny, it was nice chatting with you.”

Detra teleported away leaving only her fading voice behind.

The very next instant, time restarted and as if it had never been stopped in the first place, people all around continued a scream from earlier.

Many had huddled on the ground, waiting for impact from Torzz’s falling mountain of death and others simply held a friend or closed their eyes but after a few seconds and nothing happening Danny’s powerful voice boomed over them.

“SILENCE!”

His voice shook these soldiers to the core and they finally realized they weren’t dead. Everyone began to look around when several shouts from women and men rang out only a hundred or so feet away.

“LOOK THEY’RE HERE! THEY MADE IT OUT!”

Another woman saw one of the men among the soldiers and she leaped on him.

“Thank the gods, you’re safe.”

The woman began to cry and the two held one another. She was tormented when she had to leave with the other women, knowing that it might be the last time she saw the man she loved but she had to leave. The man as well started to cry as he called to her.

“I’m here. I’m alive.”

After Danny silenced the screams and panic, a different kind of cry spread along with joy. A cry of celebration, happiness, and more. They had survived.
