Two Worlds Reconnected – Part 01

The appearance of the undead monsters that had plagued the nights at the holy city of Agiapole had abruptly ceased. However, the people couldn’t fully rejoice, for the Einbiest army still encamped on the city’s outskirts.

Then, two nights later, the triumphant Beastmen departed from the holy city. Rumors claimed that they were transporting bodies or aiding the injured.

The events that unfolded in the great pit were described in detail by the three surviving temple guards. However, the circumstances surrounding Ranna’s demise were deliberately obscured. The report asserted that Rank A adventurer Igloo Fullblood had vanquished her at the cost of his own life.

“Are your wounds healed already?”

Luvain, scanning a freshly arrived report on the night following the disappearance of the ominous black clouds, spotted a man wearing a silver mask standing silently in a corner of the room.

“…”

Silver Face—Hikaru—stared fixedly at Luvain.

“What’s the matter? We’ve defeated Ranna, our common adversary. Isn’t there a cause for celebration?”

“How much did you know?”

Hikaru approached and stopped about five meters away from Luvain, with the office desk between them.

“What do you mean?”

“Ranna absorbing evil energy and transforming into a demon. The seal breaking. The existence of a source in the deepest part of the pit that released evil energy. That to kill the transformed Ranna, we needed potent holy energy… and that’s where the holy sword came into play.”

“…”

“And the holy sword is a weapon that converts its wielder’s life force into power.”

Seated on his desk, Luvain responded without batting an eyebrow, “I regarded everything you’ve just mentioned as possibilities. The only part I can definitively confirm knowing is the nature of the holy sword.”

“Did you give Igloo the sword because he was an idiot, thus easy to use?”

“It was the previous Pope who bequeathed the holy sword to Igloo Fullblood. I can give my thoughts on the profound wisdom of my predecessor, but personally—”

“Stop making excuses!” Hikaru’s voice surged, drawing a curious expression from Luvain. “Igloo was a moron. He was inexperienced and oblivious to the fact that his Rank A status was solely due to his weapon’s capabilities. Even knowing that his own sister had been captured by Einbiest, he did nothing. But I don’t think he deserved to be manipulated like that. No one has the right to decide the fate of others!”

What Hikaru really wanted to talk about with Luvain was Igloo. Hikaru and Igloo had an antagonistic relationship, but there was a reason for that. In this recent incident, though Hikaru didn’t know about the holy sword’s nature at the time, he had used Igloo’s life to defeat Ranna. Igloo was a victim. If Luvain ordered Igloo to go knowing the secret of the holy sword, then it meant that he had foreseen Igloo’s death and essentially treated him as a mere tool.

“Silver Face, even if I led Igloo to his death, you have no right to be angry.”

“What did you say?!”

“You were the one who destroyed the factory and forced Ranna to go to the pit.”

He made a valid point, but Hikaru had something to say about it.

“If you want to play that game, then you can blame the Church for creating the poison in the first place!”

“Correction: the previous Pope did. I’m shocked you would accuse the whole Church of endorsing the development of the Accursed Toxin.”

“You were close to the Pope. You could have stopped him.”

“Indeed, I could have. But had I opposed the idea, I would have been dismissed from my position without a second thought, and without me, many would have perished because they couldn’t receive treatment.”

“You’re just twisting things!”

“I am. Our perspectives on this matter are irreconcilable.”

Hikaru came closer and slammed his fist onto Luvain’s desk, causing the thick tabletop to tremble.

Hikaru understood that directing his anger at Luvain wouldn’t change anything. Whether he was aware or not, he was the one to take Igloo’s life with the holy sword. Perhaps he simply wished to escape the burden of that guilt, or maybe even the remorse of ending Ranna’s life with his own hands.

“Silver Face, I am deeply grateful for what you’ve done. My gratitude knows no bounds. If you wish to take my life to find satisfaction, then…”

Hikaru raised a hand, halting Luvain’s words.

“…”

He took a deep breath and exhaled. Acting solely on emotions was unlike him. The recent series of events had taken a significant toll on Hikaru.

“We made it out of the great pit somehow, but it’s still unsealed, and dark energy is still gushing out from deep within. The stability on the surface is only temporary. We took down all the monsters we came across, and Ranna absorbed a ton of evil energy, which is why we haven’t seen any more monsters.”

“I see… So that’s the situation.”

“There’s a fountainhead at the deepest part of the pit emitting malevolent miasma. According to Ranna, it’s some sort of mechanism that collects negative energy from around the world. The runes on the massive stones suggest the same, but it’s cryptic and beyond Funai’s comprehension.”

For the first time, Luvain displayed signs of agitation.

“You can seal the place or destroy the mechanism. The decision is yours to make. I don’t know how to do either.”

“Silver Face…”

“As for my payment, I’ll be demanding coins and elemental magic stones. I know where they are, so I’ll help myself.”

“Silver Face, wait.”

“Later.”

“Silver Face!”

Luvain called out, but Hikaru had already vanished. In the dimly lit room, Hikaru’s full powered Stealth made it appear as if he had suddenly disappeared before Luvain’s eyes.

“Oh, I almost forgot. If you ever step out of line like the previous Pope, I will stop you.”

A voice came from behind, but Luvain couldn’t turn around. Even if he did, Silver Face would not be there.

A massive and enigmatic magical construction, the purpose and creator of which remained a mystery. It proved resistant to both destruction and decryption, even for the genius Funai. As Luvain uncovered a new secret related to the great pit, he came to realize that an unprecedented challenge lay ahead.

When Hikaru arrived at the inn arranged by the Agiapole Adventurers Guild, he found Selyse, Sophie, Sara, Paula, and Lavia waiting in the room. It was a bit awkward to be surrounded by all women, but once inside, Hikaru removed his mask and let out a deep sigh. He placed the backpack he had been carrying on the table.

Everyone already knew that Selyse had discerned his true identity.

“Quite big,” Selyse marveled.

Paula’s healing magic was among the best in the whole continent, healing Selyse’s wounds completely.

Gerhardt had also received excellent treatment, but he exhausted all his strength. As soon as they emerged from the pit, he was carried away by the Beastmen. A few days of rest would likely see him fully recovered. Though eager to stay with Silver Face, Jillarte, the deputy leader, couldn’t neglect her boss, so she reluctantly returned to Einbiest’s camp, half-crying.

From inside the backpack emerged a green, wind elemental magic stone, noticeably larger—about three to four times—than the one Hikaru had used to cast the spell for crossing worlds. In terms of mass, it was about two to three times heavier.

Exactly thirty days had passed since he had sent Serika back to Japan.

There had been no progress in the research of the spell for crossing worlds. There was only a backup magic formula for it, created by Queen Kujastria of the Kingdom of Ponsonia. Hikaru had confirmed that returning from Japan to this world was impossible, and he didn’t think it would be any different this time. However, they could still exchange items between the two worlds, so Hikaru proposed sending letters to the members of the Four Eastern Stars.

It was 10 PM, leaving them with just thirty minutes before their planned spell.

Hikaru was supposed to perform the spell in the same place in the capital of Ponsonia, but he didn’t have time to return there, so they decided to attempt it here in Agiapole.

I think it should work. We should make contact with Serika.

Hikaru had been pondering since then. Both Serika and Hikaru had lived relatively close back in Japan, but when he delved deeper into this, he realized that being physically close in distance meant nothing.

What about the Earth’s rotation? They arrived here at different times. Would that affect anything? First of all, Hikaru met Roland, a boy who was researching the spell for crossing worlds, in the afterlife, then came here. Was there a particular reason why Roland found Hikaru? He also noted that everyone in the “afterlife” had black hair and black eyes—in other words, they were Japanese.

The key must be the soul.

Much like the Soul Rank in this world, there were also souls on Earth. These souls possessed unique powers and were drawn to one another.

Hence, in the afterlife, only Japanese souls surrounded Hikaru, as he had never interacted with foreigners. He surmised that Roland must have somehow made contact with Serika, who was already in this world. This was only a hunch, and there was no recollection of it in Roland’s memory.

That was why Roland found Hikaru among the many souls present. Hikaru believed this deduction to be nearly accurate.

The foundation of this deduction lay in what occurred when he used the spell for crossing worlds. When the rift connecting the two worlds appeared, Serika, seeing the other side, muttered, “This is Hazuki’s house.”

When Hikaru heard that, his breath caught. In the next moment, answers to numerous questions started forming in his mind.

Hazuki was Hikaru’s senior from middle school and the only person from his previous world that he had regrets about. Hazuki, like Serika, was one year older. Furthermore, if Serika recognized Hazuki’s home, it meant they were probably friends who attended the same high school. It meant that Hikaru and Serika shared a mutual acquaintance, and they were simply unaware of it until that very moment.

Given that souls were drawn to each other, the spell connecting to a house belonging to a mutual acquaintance was not at all surprising. In fact, it made sense.

In other words, location or coordinates don’t matter when casting the spell. If I use it, I should definitely connect to Serika, especially if members of the Four Eastern Stars are nearby.

Hikaru hadn’t shared all these exact details, but when he told them that it was worth trying it in Agiapole, the Four Eastern Stars agreed.

“By the way, Hikaru,” Sophie said. “Is it safe to say that starting tomorrow, you will continue researching how to improve the spell so that Serika can return here?”

“Yes. I haven’t had time to make the necessary improvements over this past month. Depending on how things progress in the coming months, obtaining a massive elemental magic stone will be quite a challenge. So, until the spell is finished, we might have to stick with using small elemental magic stones for communication, mainly sending letters.”

“I see.”

Sophie smiled and handed Hikaru a small piece of metal—a key.

“What’s this key for?” Hikaru asked, perplexed.

“This is the key to our residence in G. Ponsonia,” Selyse chimed in. “We have plenty of guest rooms, so we’ll lend it to you—and please, don’t peek into our private rooms; you might find underwear there.”

“Huh? I won’t… but what’s this about?”

“I expected a better reaction. We’re quite popular among adventurers, you know.”

Hikaru didn’t care about any of that. And seriously, the Devious Maiden self-proclaiming they were popular?

“What she’s saying is,” Sara joined, “once you open the portal, the three of us will enter it!”

“…”

Hikaru’s jaw dropped. He couldn’t quite grasp the meaning behind the words she just said.
