I should have expected something like that to happen. Thinking about it now, the second form was a dead giveaway that something like that might occur later. But before I could connect the dots in my head, there was already a mouth growing out of the tail and I ended up dead.
Moreover, how could I expect that during the third phase it would start using its breath all of a sudden? It was not doing that in the first or the second phase. Also, it might be a little cheap, but using more than one mouth for that at the same time came as a surprise here.

However, since the mobile save points made by the People of the Forest were no more, the one that I have respawned at is most probably the Skull Azuchi Castle. At least that was the place where I rested before all that. So it should be good, because even if I joined the escaped People of the Forest, I would have still ended up here.

But man, what’s the deal with that third form? Could it be that the number of additional parts can increase or decrease depending on the situation? Or maybe some new forms of attack are all dependent on that? Not to mention those blood crystals. Those things seem to be reeking of “If you won’t destroy us first, things are not going to get any easier!” kind of energy. Agh! I wish I could have stayed alive just a little bit longer! I am sure that Deepslaughter would come up with yet another borderline sexual harassment joke there like “Was it premature ejaculation!? It was premature ejaculation for sure, right!?” If that was to happen, I would have asked Kyo-Timate or someone else like her to just off her without having to regret anything about that……

All of a sudden, there was a mighty blow delivered right to my stomach!? What’s more, the impact caused my head to bounce backwards and I could feel the back of my head smashing against something really hard and really moist! What the hell!? What was with that impact just now!?
Impossible! Why would the beds in Skull Azuchi Castle be so God damn hard…… Huh?
「Sanraku-san, quick! Come back to your senses! There’s no time to be sleeping in the middle of the battlefield! The battle is not over! At least not yet!」
「Huh? Emul? What are you doing here?」
But… how? You should have left the party with everyone else and get away from here. …… Wait, what is this? What is happening here right now!?
「Kuh…… Avoid approaching this beast as much as possible! Keep a safe distance at all cost! Let us avenge the deaths of our dear comrades…… Let us reclaim our rightful home!」
「Yes! Now, look here, you filthy beast!」
「Don’t even think that you can get away from here! We are your opponents now!」
If I were to give that image a name, that would be something alongside the lines of “People who are first to die in a horror movie are desperately trying to fight off the monster that is in front of them”. I know that this may be in poor taste, but it is so nice to see other people risking their lives and giving their best for once…… In other words, this here was a rather enjoyable sight to behold.
But that’s not really important right now, so for the time being let’s just leave it at that. What is important here is the reason why the People of the Forest went back here in the first place. They should have been on their way towards the frontline base. But for some bizarre reason, they were right here, attacking the Great Red Devourer.
「What is the meaning of this……? Explain…… Tottori!」
「Well, if you were to force an explanation out of me…… I guess I’m just doing what is right here? Besides, if it was not for my resurrecting item, you would have been dead by now, so it would not kill you to show a little bit of appreciation, you know? So how about some heartfelt “Thank you”, hmm……?」
「Reviving item…… No shit, we are still in the middle of the battle!」
No, there is still about twenty percent chance that this is all but a dream or a delusion of my avatar who just died. However, when I saw Tottori readying his bow and firing arrows at the Great Red Devourer, I have come to realize that this was not a mere dream here. I really avoided death and was revived.
But that being said…… Just how many projectiles can this thing shoot? Is this an assault rifle? Or simply automatic fire? Gosh damn, I want that so bad! Maybe I should threaten some People of the Forest later to see if they are going to spill the beans about that as well, hmm?
「No, maybe this time around I should use methods other than threatening……?」
「Thinking about intimidating someone once more?」
「…… Nothing, that’s nothing you would need to concern yourself with. But look at the way in which those People of the Forest fight here. How come they have so much passion and strength in them? Is reclaiming their ancestral home really that much more important to them than their own lives?」
To be perfectly honest here, I was considering the option that Tottori might actually come back here at some point. He is a player just like we are, and he does not have to stick with the People of the Forest all the time here. So it would not be all that strange if at least some part of him was not curious about witnessing what the very first raid boss in this game was capable of doing.
Well, in reality I guess this guy pay more attention to immersing himself in the game world than I have thought. So I guess that he had to pull some really nice role-play there to make this work, otherwise I do not think that he would have gone out of his way and started to act out of character.
But the important thing is that he came back and that he brought others with him. That’s what important here. How did he manage to accomplish that? I don’t know and I don’t care.
「Okay, alright, it’s just that, you know…… I know that Emul is here, but what about those two that I have left in his care? Where are they? Are they safe?」
「When it comes to the King and the Princess I left them behind, just to be on the safe side. Oh, but don’t worry. I also left Raymond and Lasetta with them…… they are warriors who have a relatively high level amongst all People of the Forest, so it should be fine.」
