ShangriLa Frontier Chapter 424: Dragon! Oh, Dragon! PART 1 Part 1
The time was now somewhere at the end of October. It is that time of a year where you can clearly tell that it is still Fall, but the air and the atmosphere is already starting to go more and more frigid with every passing night, carrying with itself a clear sign that Winter is slowly but surely approaching. It was at the end of October, on a certain Sunday, that the Pioneers were forced into their very first large scale battle.
「THE UNIQUE SCENARIO EX: ‘Come, oh Heroes! Thy Destiny Lies Beyond the Coldness of the Stars!’ WILL NOW MOVE INTO ITS FINAL BATTLE PHASE」
「HERE IS THE LIST OF CONDITIONS NECCESSASRY TO CLEAR THIS PARTICULAR UNIQUE SCENARIO EX:」
「CLEAR CONDITION #1: DEFEAT THE UNIQUE MONSTER ‘Siegwurm, the Heavenly Emperor’.」
「CLEAR CONDITON #2: DEFEAT ‘The Red Dragon, Red Howl’, DEFEAT ‘The Green Dragon, Brockentreed’, DEFEAT ‘The White Dragon, Bryleinego’, DEFEAT ‘The Black Dragon, Noirlind’ AND DEFEAT ‘The Blue Dragon, Eldranza’.」
A system window like that was being displayed completely out of the blue to all of the players who recently managed to reach the New Continent. Also, said window would close automatically all on its own before the players would get the chance to interact with it in any sort of a way. As far as everyone would know, it sounded like a premonition or mission objective…… Or maybe even a threat.
「DJIDJIDJIDJIDJIDJIDJIDJI!!!!!!」
「W-W-What the……!? What the hell is going on……!?」
「…… Ants? N-No, that’s not it…… They are all white, so that would make them…… thermites?」
「N-No, man! That’s not it, either…… Whoa, dragon! They are dragons! A whole lot of small dragon……!?」
Those were indeed dragons. Walking on six thin legs, possessing abdomens and head way larger than their torsos and letting out eerie and disturbing calls from their mouths, a large number of small white dragons were now assaulting the frontline base. And their similarity to ants or thermites was only making them seem creepier than anything else the players have seen so far.
This monstrous white tsunami was marching forward without interruption, a clear unnatural phenomenon on the green and lush background of nature all around the field. Faced with this sudden and bizarre invasion, the players who were initially in shock now started to muster their defenses, trying to intercept the monsters using their weapons and defensive tactics.
But it was then at that exact time.
「AH, I SEE, IT IS DEFINIETLY A GOOD PLACE…… I DON’T LIKE THE FACT THAT IT LIES IN THE OPEN LIKE THAT, BUT…… OH WELL, WITH SOME SMALL ADJUSTMENTS IT IS GOING TO MAKE FOR A WONDERFUL HABITAT TO LIVE IN.」
A voice that was low, but at the same time it was also high. It was a voice that felt like one huge contradiction, and it was reverberating throughout the entire area.
It was also a voice that was clear and coherent, a clear contradiction to the incessant and bestial shrill of the small dragons advancing towards the frontline base. Those words and that voice had a female tone to it, and it was a clear and professional appraisal of the location where the frontline base was situated at. For a moment out there there was only silence, but right after that the voice continued, alongside with its owner fin ally making an appearance.
「YES, THAT’S RGHT. THIS PLACE CAN BE OURS. ONLY THING WE NEED TO DO NOW IS TO SIMPLY ELIMINATE THE MAGGOTS THAT ARE CURRENTLY INFESTING IT AND WE CAN MOVE I INSTANTLY…… FUFUFUFUFU! LET US GO AND DO THAT RIGHT AWAY! MY DEAR, BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN! OVERRUN THIS PLACE AND SLAUGHTER EVERYONE WHO DARES TO STAND IN YOUR WAY!」
That creature was way too unusual to call it a mere dragon. But…… Yes, that’s it. Instead of a dragon, it would be way more plausible to perhaps call this monster a “Mother” of the small dragons advancing towards the frontline base. In that case, it would be much simpler and easier to just start pointing out the similarities between the two. Because that giant dragon looked much more like an ant than an actual dragon.
However, even then there would be some clear distinctions. The upper body of the “Mother” that was attached to the abdomen was way larger and more bloated than that of her “children”. On a closer inspection it would actually turn out that rather than the ant it looked more like a hybrid between a human and a horse. So in a matter of speaking this “Mother” was more like a centaur in nature than the actual dragon.
And above all else, the abdomen of this monstrosity was standing out more than anything else. On its back, supported by more than a dozen of long and thin legs, there were some strange protrusions with a silhouette reminiscent of that of an onion, from which an inexhaustible amount of small dragons were crawling out, disfigured and still covered in a mixture of body fluids, falling onto the ground only to join the ever growing white tsunami that was pressing its charge onto the frontline base.
「The White Dragon…… Bryleinego…… The White Dragon is here……!!」
That name, slowly rolling off the tongues of player after player all around the frontline base grew louder and louder, transforming from the silent mutter into a harrowing cry filled with despair. It also happened to be the correct answer.
A pure white dragon that was more like a “dragon colony” more than anything else. While never stopping to produce its smaller clones, it let out a mighty roar into the air. That roar sounded like a call of a warhorn, one that marked the beginning of the Dragon Disaster War.
「Forget about the main body for the time being! We need to do something about the small dragons, and we need to do something about them fast! Then we will think about what to do next!」
Those words may not have been directed to anyone in particular, or they might have been addressed to everyone present. However, some people felt as though they needed to take action hearing those words, and that urge to act slowly started to spread from player to player, like a flow of the river.
Of course, this does not mean that the players started to act in perfect unison, but the vast majority of them started to direct their actions towards reducing the number of the small white dragon that were creeping closer and closer towards the base.
「I’m going to get the first blood here!」
Of course, there were also those who decided to form a raid party and launch an attack at the White Dragon herself. However, the raiding party was intercepted by one of the small dragons that crawled out from the back of the White Dragon and jumped at them, and at the next moment, a large number of small dragons followed in the footsteps of that one dragon and a white wave took out the raiding party all at once.
「Hyiii! A splash damage!?」
「Watch out, guys! This monster also has ranged attacks at its disposal!」
