ShangriLa Frontier Chapter 440: Dragon, Oh Dragon! PART 17 Part 1

* * *

It was something that was as fluid as the wind itself.

It was something that was like a rain that just kept on pouring down without interruption.

It was something that was as rough and as sudden as a thunder strike.

Yes…… That something was just like a red storm, appearing completely out of the blue and crushing right through the battlefield, destroying everything that was unfortunate enough to get in its path.

「…… Alright, we should probably use that occasion to go there as well. At least for the moment it should be way easier than before.」

「When I saw that, for a moment out there I was taken so aback that I have actually forgotten to move……」

「Well, I’d say that at this point in time it would be better for us to get used to seeing things like that. It would be less of a shock further down the road, when even crazier things are bound to take place. …… I wonder if he can operate his menu screens like normal in this state?」

The way Katsu was seeing thing’s one of Sanraku’s greatest strengths is not his insane reaction speed or years of experience built upon conquering various shitty games. Sanraku’s greatest strength actually lied in the speed at which he was always able to adapt to the new User Interface each and every time he was switching games.

Although it is not something that is strictly limited to ShangriLa Frontier alone, being able to swiftly operate system windows during battles is one of the most crucial abilities that the players can possess. Especially in those games in which the player has to do everything on their own, without actually relying too much on the system’s assist.

「ShangriLa Frontier is that type of a game where you can call out the system window with your thought alone and then operate said windows with your fingers. Besides ShanFro, there are other User Interfaces that utilize the similar rule, but…… Sanraku is a true virtuoso when it comes to high speed menu operations. You don’t see people like him all that much anymore.」

The red beast lets out a roar, the intention of which must have been to sound like a laugh. It was like a dragon. It was like a wolf. It was like a shark. It was like a bird of prey. And then it continued to march forward, slashing and crushing its enemies and everyone who dared to stand in its path.

The beast’s hands moves without a slightest inkling of hesitation, and occasionally it summons up the inventory window to call up a new weapon and let go of the previous one, not breaking its attack and advance pace even for a moment. Then the hole process is being repeated, everything at the pace that was so dazzling that it was actually hard to keep track of it.

Just when you were thinking that dual swords dance through the battlefield, it turns out that it was actually the steel gauntlets that were crushing the bones and sending the dragons to the ground. But then it turns out it was actually a flaming sword that was tracing the bright lines in the air, and the oversized executioner’s sword that was cleaving the enemies in half. It was a truly chaotic and beautiful spectacle that had seemingly no end.

「He’s not even looking at what he is taking out…… isn’t he?」

「Most probably he must have memorized the scrolling speed of the menu, and then he must have memorized what item is located at which place while scrolling. If I remember correctly he calls that “Item Pulling Technique”. It’s certainly a neat ability to have mastered, but it has one downside: you need to have at least one hand free if you want to do it. If both of your arms are occupied, then you can forget about it.」

「So, it’s something like…… acrobatics, perhaps?」

「No, not really? At least I don’t think so. It may sound complicated, but if you were to place the items you need at the top of the bottom of the column, then the process of memorization becomes significantly easier. So it’s really that simple.」

However, in Sanraku’s case it all boils down to the simple fact that he could operate the inventory windows as seemingly breathtaking pace. And it was not a matter of luck or a fluke, it was time after time with him.

「…… If there will ever come a day when you hear Sanraku badmouthing the User Interface of some game as too trashy and bad, you know that the world might as well come to an end.」

Certainly, every time the player opens up the inventory it takes them a moment to find what they need and then equip it. And that is to say without accounting for all other forms of distractions that are always present on the field or in the middle of the battle. At a time like this it’s best to just take a deep breath and calm yourself down.

But that being said, Katsu knew that it was about time he stopped daydreaming and come back to reality.

「Is he perhaps trying to pinpoint the location of Rust and Mold……? Ah, yeah, that’s right. Saiga-100-san? Do you perhaps know where the Blood Dragon Demons are?」

「Dragon Blood Demons……? Ahh, you mean those odd-looking players that were so overly enthusiastic to go into the battle earlier? If I remember correctly, they were fighting the small dragons somewhere around the White Dragon. They were saying something about not being able to stand its sight any longer or something like that……」

For better or for worse, Saifa-100 talks about the Blood Dragon Demons while massaging her temples. It was as though this particular subject was causing her to have quite a headache.

「Ahh, but now that I think about it, I do believe that they have shifted their focus towards the Red Dragon. You know, because of the buff from the Skull Azuchi Castle, the one giving players increased Fire Resistance.」

「Wait, so that means that……」

Right about now, the Red Dragon was at the same location as the White Dragon, since that was the direction where it decided to flee upon seeing the players ganging up on it. Not to mention that it crushing into the White Dragon created a very nasty chain of aggro across the entire field. So in other words……

「Ah! There they are!」

「Uweh!? Ahh, what the……? It’s just you, Katsu-san……?」

「…… Why are you acting so surprised? We have seen one another not so long ago, right?」

By a complete accident Katsu and his company were able to find just the people they were all looking for on this battlefield.

It was easy to see that both Rust and Mold’s equipment was melted a little bit and covered in sooth all over, as those were the usual consequences of fighting against the Fire-type enemies. But from the look on their faces and the overall state of their equipment Katsu was able to deduce that even though the battle with the Red Dragon surely must have been exhausting, it should not have been too overly difficult.

「For the time being, the Rust Plan is underway. We must join up with Pencilgton as soon as possible, and then the Plan can finally move on to its final stage.」

「The Plan…… Say what now?」
