ShangriLa Frontier Chapter 611: After All, the Last Thing We Need Is Some Useless, General Purpose Cards! Part 1
Let’s take a moment in here to talk about the way in which the Philogenetic Geoglyph works!!
The most funky and exciting way in which you can grab yourself a win in this thing is by far to form your very own unique ecosystem on the playing field that resembles the real world, and then fill it in with monster cards that are going to benefit from being thrown into that ecosystem in which they can easily thrive in and receive various bonuses. At the same time, you must make sure to keep the opponent’s field as small as possible to prevent them from summoning the monsters of their own, ultimately preventing them from being able to do any sort of damage to your field or monsters. And once your opponents has no monsters that would actually shield them from taking damage, you use your own monsters to attack your opponent directly in hopes of draining their Life Points to zero as fast as possible!
In reality, it all might sound fancy and complicated, but if you have had prior experience with other Trading Card Games, than you know exactly what it is that must be done here to win! Really, your standard Trading Card Games rules apply in here, for better or for worse.
Now, let’s talk about the general flow of the game in some greater details, shall we?
First of all, the players go and arrange up to four monsters cards in the space on the field called the “Origin” zone. There are four such zones at each side of the field, for player one and player two respectively. After that, each player can put monster cards with special effects to their card onto the designated “Stimulator” zone, and every player has two of those “Stimulator” zones on their side of the field. Then there is the phase of the turn when the players can activate “Spell Phenomena”. Then there is a phase when the players can use some special cards in order to arrange their “Area” or to change it considerably. Some of the effects of the changed field may involve being able to gain more Origin zones to place more monsters onto the field, give the monsters that are already on the field more effects or to better their statistics, or even place some other special zones that would allow you to make plays that you would normally be unable to do. Like, for example, setting up a special “Evolution” zone in which you can summon up monsters that are another stage of “Evolution” for some regular monsters, making them even more powerful and granting them even better field effects in the process……. Not to mention that those “Evolved Monsters usually possess the strength to close the game for you in about a turn or two.
「Hmm, oh yes, I see. I see. I get it. I understand everything now.」
To be perfectly honest with you all here, I don’t really get it. Or at the very least, not everything. But that’s okay. We can start with learning the basics first, and then move onto the more detailed and nuanced rules. It’s all part of the learning process when it comes to the Trading Card Games. I mean, no one is capable of just hearing or reading the rules one time and mastering them on the spot, you know? It’s just the way thing are, so there is nothing that I can really do about it. No, let’s see…… Let’s try to do this…… Oh? I can’t? Hmm, than maybe try something like this? Huh? I cannot do that either!? Well, then how about……
Seriously now, if Elementary School students are able to grasp the complex sets of rules for games like that seemingly on the spot, then there is no way in hell that a High Schooler won’t be able to do just that! Patience! Patience is the key here! We are going to get there just fine, I just need a little bit more time to get my bearings!
But that’s okay, really. Learning through trial and error is all part of the process here, all part go the fun. Yes, that’s right. Now, onto my actual opponent…… The Keeper of the first floor of the “Tower”. It is a humanoid creature with an ambiguous outline, something similar in nature to that Techno Magi Gel way back from the first layer of the Leviathan! Who would have thought that it would make a comeback here!? It stretches its hand forward while holding its deck in that hand, as if it was some form of a greeting. So I respond in kind, while actually striking a pose to boot! It was actually a little bit silly, but a little bit of silliness has never actually hurt anyone, now did it?
「Okay then, let’s get this thing started, shall we!?」
「OHH! NOW THAT’S WHAT WE CALL ENTHUSIASM RIGHT THERE! ALRIGHT! IF YOU WANT TO GET STARTED RIGHT AWAY, JUST SHOUT OUT THE WORD “GENERATION” AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS……」
「…… Huh? Must I, really? Is it really something that is absolutely essential to do here in order to start?」
「YES, YES IT IS. IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. WITHOUT THAT PHRASE, NOTHING IS GOING TO BE ABLE TO START.」
Huh, seriously now……? Why do I feel it’s like trying to artificially make your blood pumping and your tension to raise up? It reeks of a trope from the shounen manga, and the ones from the eighties at that. Or maybe what? Are you telling me that the more pumped up I am going to be, the stronger my attacks will become? That would surely be nice, but I’m not as naïve to actually believe in something like that, you know?
「GENERAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATIOOOOOOOOOOOOONNN ––––––!!!!!!!!!!!!」
Alright! I did it! Happy now!? Now, I’d better get to go first in this thing, or else I am really going to be quite mad in here, just to let you know in advance!
「My Turn!」
And now for some additional rules and explanation here: this game has no such thing as “mana” or “activation cost” for the cards that you play, but for the duration of the first two turns neither of the players can attack using their monster cards, spell cards or field effects. So what can you do during this safety net period? Why, of course you must take the initiative to establish a good and threatening presence on the board!
Kukuku, let me show you now…… Hidden Technique: Rarity Reversal! Let’s flood the board with Crystal Scorpion cards!!!
「I play a “Crystal Scorpion Flock” from my hand, and once the first monster is placed in the Origin Zone, the “Breeding” Spell Card is added to my hand as well……What’s more! I play the “Regulated Condition Area Raison D’etre / Crystal Zone” from my hand into the Zone Area!! With all of that, all the necessary conditions are well in place!!」
Normally, If you were to end your turn with only one Crystal Scorpion Flock on the field, it would automatically go extinct. Which means that it would be gone without a trace. However, if you throw this particular “Regulated Condition Area / Crystals” erases the field disadvantages of the Crystal Scorpion Flock! In addition to that, it has the effect of randomly searching up to four cards whose card name or text includes the word “Crystal Scorpion Flock” from my deck at the beginning of every turn!
