CHAPTER 104: NIGHT IS DARKEST BEFORE DAWN
***VITOU’S POV***
“What do you mean it is gone?”
“I mean it is no longer there. In an instant, it disappeared completely. It didn’t swim away, it just vanished.”
What the heck? Could it be that Space Magic? Isn’t this just brilliant? Not only does it have water magic, but also that ridiculous magic Toriwa possesses. That thing only gives me more trouble.
“Stay on guard, it should appear somewhere soon enough. Father, please head inside, this might turn out ugly and I want you somewhere safe and away from clear air where you can be attacked.”
“Don’t look down on me. I still have my Sword of Light and I can tell you that whoever this master is, he has the Sword of Fire. I don’t know who he is and how he got the sword, but he is still somewhere around here.”
I should have known he wouldn’t pull back. After all, he is also a warrior, but this situation was weird as well. If the person had the Sword of Fire, why isn’t he using it? He must know we have the Sword of Light, so does that make him reluctant to go against it? There are way too many unknowns about this person.
For now, I decided to let him be. Being at sea was a disadvantage to me, because I couldn’t use earth and fire type magic freely. Sadly there was no land near here where we could turn the odds in our favor so I had to rely solely on my wind attribute.
“Ishikawa release the ice magic you are keeping on standby and recover your strength. Nakamura you are still our lookout. Men have the cannons ready, we will not allow that person to catch us off guard.”
Everyone was tense, always on the edge. The silence held on with nothing occurring. It was almost as if that attack didn’t happen and everything that happened before was merely a dream we all had. Could it be that they really escaped after failing to defeat us in a single attack? Could it be that since we were able to block that attack, they concluded it was impossible to beat us and ran away?
“Vitou dear, it’s been an hour already without any movement. I think it is safe to say that they are gone.”
“What about your sword? As long as that doesn’t stop, I will not relax my guard.”
“Maybe it is wrong and there is something about this place that is making it tremble. I don’t believe that someone would be able to steal the Sword of Fire from the King of Vilikis.”
I wasn’t buying it. The Sword of Light was after all a legendary weapon. It is said that coming across a legendary item is something one might never come to see in their whole lives. The power each item held was unimaginable. That is why I am placing my bet with the sword.
“Father you are becoming careless. This person is playing a waiting game and I intend to win. I will not be unprepared no matter what happens.”
My father sat back down, still grasping the sword. This master was quite formidable. Not only did he have the power but also a good head on his shoulders. He knew how to play this game. To win one needs to have a strong will and a lot of patience.
“Nakamura, take a short break. I will need you to be in top condition. Ishikawa take over for now, reduce the radius, but look for every detail.”
I had no idea how this person was hiding, but there was no movement detected at all aside from the waves hitting the ship. And even with all of us using presence detection there was no reaction at all. The only evidence we had the person was still here was the trembling sword.
Another half an hour passed. Nakamura recovered and resumed his tracing duty but there was still no change. The sailors who were tense all this time also started to feel lax.
Holding onto tension and focus for a long time was hard and exhausting. And our attacker was holding the upper hand whether he knew it or not.
“Your Highness please take a break. I will take over the guard duty for a bit. Just like you said, we need to be in optimal condition that includes you as well.”
“Thank you for your concern Ishikawa, but I am fine. I am still in my prime condition, have no worry.”
I said that but I couldn’t help and sigh. It has been so long that I found anything that might actually help me improve and gain levels so I decided to rush and kill that monster. I never thought it would have turned into something so troublesome. I really messed up earlier.
I looked up to the skies to watch the stars above me. There should be another hour until dawn starts to break out. If we endure until then, I can say we passed the night safely. But right now, with the dark hiding this person, I could not feel at ease.
It was as I was looking up that I caught a glimpse of something that shouldn’t be there. A small figure was diving down head first towards us.
“Everyone prepare! Enemy attack above us!”
That small figure was holding a sword and I could him prepare for a slashing motion. I was already prepared to counter whatever gets sent at us when Nakamura, much my and everyone else’s surprised, yelled out to the figure attacking us.
“Maeda-san! Stop this now! We’re not your enemies!”
I was dumbfounded, did he just say Maeda as is Maeda Naoko, that girl who I was desperately trying to avoid, considering she is that demon’s younger sister and my father’s ideal daughter in law? Just why is she here of all places. Wasn’t she supposed to be in Orzak?
I watched as that figure stop the motion and vanish before reappearing before my eyes on the deck completely drenched with just as confused expression as the rest of us.
“Eh, Nakamura-kun, Ishikawa-kun, Your Highness, Your Majesty? What you doing here?”
