CHAPTER 129: TRAINING BEGINS
When the sun had risen everyone was gathered in front of the city gate. It was time to start their training and I had quite a fun way to do it.
“Everyone listen up, from what I learned about you yesterday and the reports I got I decided to form six groups each one with four members. You will act in these groups until the first phase of training is complete. For today I want you to play a game of tag. As you can see there is one senior member in each party and what I want you to do today is to catch him by noon today. This will also serve as a first test to see how well you can adapt to new situations.”
I showed them the list of teams. Thanks to Yoru and Byakko there shouldn’t be any dangerous monsters that would be able to harm them. I saw some discontent among newcomers that were separated from their friends, but this was all planned out.
“How will you rate us? You can’t observe all six groups at the same time. I feel that somebody might be judged poorly because you were looking elsewhere.”
The one that spoke was Luca. He was already outstanding. I am sure he didn’t need to worry about being graded badly, but since he asked I will answer. It was after all a good and fair question concerning everyone.
“You will not have to worry about that. I already have several informants attached to each group. I don’t know if you were informed before, but it is a well known fact that I am a spirit magician and I can communicate with what is hidden to normal eyes. Do not worry, none of you will be neglected. Now, I will have the senior members go and run for thirty minutes after which you will go and track them. To make it fair since we are on a time limit; You cannot go over thirty kilometers away from town and after two hours pass, the senior members will have to stay in one place until they are spot any one of you. You can do whatever you want to catch them, of course killing and severely hurting them is off limits.”
With a clap of my hands the six official members dispersed and the rest of the groups began discussing among them how to capture their targets. Before the thirty minute mark one of the boys called upon everyone and distributed some items to all teams.
“Each one of us has a target of their own, but if by any case we come across someone else, just use this small flares to indicate that you saw a target. There are six different colors in each pack so we just need to choose a color for each team.”
Oh, this guy is really creative, he already figured out that this was not a competition on who gets first place, but that all the teams are in this together and that information should be shared. If I remember correctly, he should be called Simeon. I have a feeling that he will become very useful to the team in the future.
Once they all set off to hunt for their target I decided to visit the Goblin Lair, I really hate to admit it but that mountain and cavern system really does make for a great dungeon. I didn’t know much about dungeons in this world, there were barely any records of them in the guild library. I only know about three of them in Elicia and all of them are extremely hard and dangerous. I simply thought that they were rare and not to be trifled with unless you are certain of your strength. But listening to what that bastard said there seems to be more to this story than I thought.
Well since I had a lot of time on my hands I decided to carve out my dungeon. I will follow the advice of not being too greedy and trying to bite off more than I can chew, so I left the main structure of caverns as they were and decided to keep it as the first floor of the dungeon. I will make the second floor below this one using earth elementals and the third floor will be my lair and room for the dungeon core.
I figured I would be able to control that much for now. I called upon the elementals and began my construction project. I wasn’t in a rush since I needed to make it sturdy and able to endure all the fighting that will occur inside the dungeon. Also I should probably acquire this land so I can be at leisure without worrying someone would snatch this piece of land.
Before noon arrived I returned to the town and was surprised that two groups were already waiting there with captured members. Ehni and Simeon’s group finished early. I greeted them and then listened to the report the ghosts I employed gave. It turns out Ehni not only has great hiding skills, but also some amazing tracking skills on top of that. Simeon’s group worked hard and ambushed the target catching him with great teamwork.
Soon after another group arrived, it was Ina’s group. They acted similar to Simeon’s group and set up an ambush. The biggest part was played by an earth mage who was able to create a cage while the other two closed in and attacked.
I was very happy with their cooperation. I could see that all of them are experienced adventurers and can adapt quite well to new situations. Two more groups were also able to capture their targets. From the ghosts’ report I learned that they joined hands since both targets were really close to each other. They used one group to smoke out the target and the other to capture it. It was a really effective idea and it worked out perfectly for them.
In the end only Zyra’s group didn’t manage to capture their target, but upon hearing the reason why this happened, I felt really bad. Apparently they were able to locate their target early on and set up an ambush, but as they were going to act on it, a huge tiger appeared to take a bath near the river where the ambush was set. Thanks to this their target was able to notice them and get away.
“Perfect, I can already see that you are more than ready to be trained in full capacity. All of you have an hour to relax and eat something after which you will meet me here for some studying. Zyra and everyone from your team do not feel dejected. I owe you an apology since I didn’t tell you about Byakko and caused your plans to fail, but this is also a good thing since you know better than to risk your life carelessly. You all passed with flying colors. Also just so you know, that tiger is my tamed beast, he will not harm you unless you decide to hurt him first, so you won’t have to worry.”
The three of them brightened a bit and ran off with the others. In this hour that I had I ran to the government building. I really wanted to get that mountain for myself.
“Good afternoon Duchess, how may I be of service?”
“I want to buy some land outside the town; it is a bit of a large area. It used to be a goblin lair, but now it is empty. I want to use it as a training region. Can that be accomplished?”
The receptionist looked very surprised with my demand. I guess it is not very often that people want to buy such a large area and especially not one that is overrun with monsters. But if it is possible she should be able to sell it to me.
“For such a large purchase I am afraid I do not have the authority. Only our lord would be able to approve this. I suggest you pay a visit to the Earl. He is never at this building so I suggest you visit him at the mansion. Once you have his approval and the price settles, come back here and we will set up a payment method.”
I immediately left for the Earl’s Mansion. I don’t know who told him I was coming, but he seemed like he was expecting to see me as he already had all the documents ready for me.
