CHAPTER 177: ADDITIONAL HICCUP TO MY PLAN

You would think that my appearance and the Archduke’s words would leave others stunned or at least wondering about what was going on, but no. Once the atmosphere broke from all the tension, the line of people waiting to congratulate the “happy couple” was formed almost immediately. The Prince and the King seemed oddly satisfied with this, but the Queen was suspicious. And she was not the only one, my self-proclaimed brother looked confused as well for some reason.

“Vitou-sama, congratulations on your engagement. Naoko-sama, the stories I heard about you do you no justice. You are much more beautiful in person than what they say. I dare say you will be the most beautiful addition to the royal family. It will be my honor to call you my Queen on day.”

So full of shit, why does everyone spew such words of nonsense flattery all the time. Don’t they get tired of it? And worse of all they all are trying to approach me and kiss my hand every time. Vitou-sama was currently distracted by someone else so it was time to act.

“You overpraise, baron. Thank you, I think.”

Like several times before I tried to look at this man in the eye as he raised his head, but before I could do it, the Archduke appeared out of nowhere and ‘accidentally’ blocked my line of sight. He definitely knows what skills I have and what effect it has on others. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be so adamant on making sure I don’t look at others directly.

“Nao-chan, do you really plan on causing chaos here? That little ability of yours might cause pain to others you know. Racial skills are not to be taken lightly, especially not the likes of which originate from demons.”
“Oh, so now you care about others. When you were ruining my life, I didn’t see you caring so much about me, did you now? Maybe I’m wrong, but when I protested and was saying no I didn’t see you consider that.”

Why was he involving himself with me in the first place? When we first met it was just mere curiosity, but why claim to be my brother? Why did he adopt me into his house? And why on earth would he treat me so well in the beginning even going so far where I can say that he spoiled me, only to betray me the next second. I don’t understand him at all.
“I only consider theirs because that life is fragile and short. Yours is nothing like that. I’m sure you will understand one day. Well to be honest I am quite surprised you didn’t notice it so far, but you really adapted much better than I thought. Honestly, because of that you made some things easier for me.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Let’s leave it at the fact that even among Heroes that came from Earth you are a little special. Now behave, okay?”

He left and took the Baron, that was about to be left with no sense of self, away from me. I actually clicked my tongue as I watched them. I will definitely not let this pass peacefully. Why does he need me to suffer? This is all one big farce, it’s not like I will allow anything to happen between us. In the worst case scenario I’ll turn into runaway bride.

“Nao-chan I just felt you thinking something bad. Why won’t you act like a good little sister and listen to him? You already did more than enough with the dress and protested so that people noticed. If it weren’t for your brother things would have gone bad.”

“I’m doing all this because he did intervene. I was hoping for a better reaction.”

“Nao-chan, please, do it for me.”

Do it for him? I was doing all this because of them. I should be chilling in the dungeon or in my inn enjoying best cooked food and not wearing these silly dresses and listening to empty words of flattery while thinking how to cause chaos. I dissed him and those words he said and went to greet the next noble that approached. Not that I will stop trying to charm them.

“Dear guests, may I have a moment of your attention. You must have all given your congratulations to my dearest son Vitou and soon to be daughter Naoko-chan. I would like to take this opportunity to call the two of them to join me. It is time to announce the witnesses they chose for the ceremony.”

Wait, I was not informed of this. You can’t do this to me. I can’t choose a maid of honor on the spot. I need to be told about such events in advance.

“Vitou, I already heard you have your choice for the best man. Would you share with everyone who that man would be?”
“It would be my honor, father. The one I am choosing to be my best man is the same man whom I am deeply indebted and also made it possible so I could gain such a wonderful bride. It is none other than the Archduke Tenryuu.”

No way, how did this happen? Best man, that person? I was very much planning on not having him in the same building where the wedding would be held. I definitely did not count on him standing basically next to me for the entire wedding ceremony. This might put a little dent into my current plans.

“I am honored to be chosen Your Highness.”

No, no, no! I need to do something. I can’t have him monitoring me like this. This is bad news for me. Really bad news.
“Naoko-chan, who do you choose to be your maid of honor?”

The King asked and smirked. I knew it, this is a trap. I was informed about this part of the engagement party on purpose. I bet he wants me to choose someone from his camp and that way he would be able to better monitor me.
“I choose the woman that have offered me shelter and helped me in many ways when I was in trouble and she also happens to be one of my best friends. It is Mylene-san from the town of Orzak.”

Technically speaking, I don’t have that many friends that happen to be girls at the same time. Also Princess was out of the question since she can’t leave the vicinity of the dungeon. Ina and Zyra are good, but I don’t see them as being my maids of honor.

“Naoko-chan I must inform you that commoners, trader, farmers, innkeepers included cannot be witnesses to royal weddings. Don’t you have anyone else you can give this important task to?”

Not commoners, this sucks royally. I could ask Inoue-san, but I really don’t want to. I will do that if that is my very last option. Since that is the case I can only choose another adventurer. After all he didn’t mention them.

“I will choose Millie from the Adventurer’s Guild in Orzak.”

“I didn’t mention it, but adventurers are also considered commoners, therefore I cannot accept that choice. If you don’t have anyone else, how about choosing my Luana?”

So that was his plan, I’d rather not do that. The less I had to do with royalty the better. It’s not like I had anything against her, but sadly I was trying to break away from the royal family and not become closer with them.

“It would be my honor Naoko-sama to hear you think so highly of me. I shall bear witness to your wedding as High Priestess of Wind Tribe.”

M-Millie-chan? What are you doing here?!
