CHAPTER 179: THEIR STORY
“Naoko-san, it seems like the two of us have some explaining to do. Can you listen to our story?”
“Nino-san, Millie-chan. I don’t understand. Is this the right place to talk? If you come later to my room, it might be more relaxing.”
“Here is good enough, people inside will just think you are talking with your Maid of Honor after not seeing her for a long time. Also going away for an hour or so will not be noticed in such parties, so no big deal.”
Nino-san knew I didn’t want this marriage and I am pretty sure Millie-chan was aware of the situation as well. Otherwise, she would not be in this place, nor would she have introduced herself as High Priestess.
“Then I will listen. I will try not to interrupt to the best of my abilities.”
It’s better they say everything first, instead of my just asking questions. I will ask them later if anything is not clear.
“Well then, here we go. Millie and I come from the Island of Boru across the Western Sea. That Island is peculiar in a way that strong, but non hostile monsters live there, even up to this day. Up until six hundred years ago the rulers of this continent claimed the land of that island as their own. They would arrive occasionally to visit it, but never stayed for long, nor did they ever cause harm to the island. Then it all changed one day. A city was planned to be built.”
“You see materials are needed for that and they decided to cut down the forest to make it. And they cut down a lot. The monsters living there gathered and raided the city being built to take revenge on those that kept destroying their homes. After those raids on the city the humans stopped coming. Only some stray adventurers would wander by from time to time.”
“Now moving onto our origin. Boru Island didn’t only have monsters. Another race lived within its midst. From your humans’ perspective we belong to an almost extinct race, but that is pure nonsense. It’s just that we can hide well and don’t have a need to meddle with others’ affairs.”
No freakin’ way. I had no idea. I mean both of them are pretty and lovely while being polite and humble, but I thought it was because they needed to be because of their job. I never would have guessed if he didn’t spell it out like that to me.
“You already figured it out, didn’t you Naoko-san? You are quite observant.”
“You’re elves? I had no idea, like none at all. If Nino-san didn’t just say it so I don’t think I would be able to realize it.”
“You’re right, I actually thought you might be one when I first met you. If you didn’t see your status that day I would be certain you were one, you simply have such air around you. Anyways, going back to the story, Boru has six villages: Wind, Heaven, Earth, Water, Holy and Night. Heaven is the strongest and only they have the right to call upon all other villages, but the rest are more or less autonomous.”
“Millie-chan introduced herself as a High Priestess. She was born with extremely high affection to spirits. Even from a young age she could communicate with them and they would often warn her about dangers coming our way. They also warned us about a calamity waiting to strike almost two hundred years ago.”
Two hundred years? They are that old? I don’t think adding -chan to her name is appropriate. But why is she always so timid? Wouldn’t you be more confident after so many years.
“One second, how do you fit into all this Nino-san? The Archduke also called you nobility. How can he know who you are?”
“I’m about to explain that. Thanks to the warning she gave us, the Heaven Tribe gathered everyone under the protection of the Sacred Tree and Mother Earth and we were able to defeat the person that had come to Boru. The man invaded the Island and was killing its inhabitants and searching for a material called Silverdust. This is a treasure of Heavens that can prolong life. But it is not something that we give out.”
“He tried defeating us and we fought back. The battle went on for a long time, but he couldn’t win. And as for us, we couldn’t kill him, or specifically speaking, he wouldn’t remain dead. So to deal with such case we placed a curse on him and forced him to sign a blood contract forbidding him from ever harming another elf and banishing him from Boru. That man was the same one as the Archduke.”
“WHAT?!”
Wait, wait, wait! Isn’t this something from two hundred years ago? How can he still be alive? He is human, right? Could he be a demon, a vampire, or… Is he the Black King, the Undying Necromancer? He must have Dark magic for sure and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had Spirit Magic as well. I mean the curse he placed on me was not so simple.
“Your little acquaintance. I honestly couldn’t recognize him the first time I saw him with you at the guild. Later when I thought about it, I realized exactly who he was, but it is not like he can do anything to us, so there was no need to deal with him. But in order to make sure another person such as him does not come to Boru, each tribe sent some members to act as eyes and ears for the race and warn everyone in time if such person appears.”
Holy smokes, I still can’t believe there was so much stuff going on behind the scene of the Orzak guild. I wonder just how many people that I met are not actually humans. I think I might have underestimated the diversity of this world.
“Anyways, I volunteered to go with my Uncle and then Millie said she would go as well. After all, she is my wife. You asked me why I was also considered nobility. It is because my father is part of the High Council of Elves. You can think of him as a tribe leader or a mayor.”
I think I will need a moment or two to process everything that I learned today. But I finally got some good news.
“I can’t believe all this. There is so much information I still don’t understand and need to check further. Millie-san, do you really have Spirit magic?”
“You can still call me –chan if you prefer to, and yes I do have it, but yours is much stronger than mine. Until I met you I had no idea there were elementals present around us. I call them Nature Spirits since it feels nicer to me. I had no idea they were so angry about being forgotten for all these years, but luckily they do help me out from time to time. Not so often though and whenever you are around, I get completely ignored and all they ever talk about is you. I must say I am jealous.”
I had no idea, but I really am glad. I am glad that she was who she was, and that she alongside Nino-san had become my allies. The hopeless situation in which I thought I have gotten myself into had become a bit brighter once again.
“Naoko-san, what are your plans? Sadly we can’t stay for too long, but if it is something we can do, count on it at any time.”
“Yeah, what are your plans Nao-chan?”
I turned around and saw VItou with the Archduke at the door of the terrace. I don’t know how long they stood there, but I was sure it was not very long.
“There is no plan for today. I already did what I wanted to do; protest and deny you so that I make you angry enough. Also make people doubt, even just a little bit.”
I smiled and without bothering to talk any longer to the two newcomers , I thanked Nino-san and Millie-chan, before heading back inside. I was feeling quite content with myself.
