CHAPTER 190: HIGHWAY ROBBERY
While I was still trapped inside Orzak I had experimented with a lot of cooking, and when I put in the finished product into my inventory it still only took a single slot. This had me thinking, since the many components of a meal are considered a single object, what else can be done so that it follows the same logic. Having a completed montage house just so happened to be one of those things, but as long as I think of something as one single completed object I would be able to stuff it into a single inventory slot.
“How did you do that? You should have said something if you had a house like this. We could have saved some space with tents and other things.”
“Well, this is my tent. We each bring our own camping equipment. And since Mia is my attendant she gets a free pass. Fulgur is part of my staff, so it is only natural I provide him with a place to sleep.”
“But… but how can this be? Aren’t we all in the same party?”
“Don’t worry, I will take watch as well. And since I am the owner of the inn, I will gladly offer you bed and breakfast for meager price of 1 gold per room. This is one heck of a deal when you think about how you are currently in the middle of nowhere.”
To make it more realistic, I had a sign with ‘INN’ painted in red color right above the entrance. I added this detail mainly to squeeze more money out of Vitou, who was currently frowning. Marc on the other had immediately gone inside.
“Well, I will be taking the second shift. Fulgy will take the first. You can decide on the rest.”
“Wait, we’ll pay. This way there will be no need for a lookout. I really want to hit you right now, Nao-chan. I wish you had told me about this earlier and not act like this.”
“Tee-hee, Welcome to the Lost Inn. I hope you enjoy your stay.”
I showed them to their rooms as well as the bath and smoking area. I even provided tobacco for a silver coin. I saw it in a dungeon catalogue and stocked up on it since it was dirt cheap, and guests seemed to like having it on sale. I don’t know if there are laws on how much can be sold, but so far nobody complained about it.
Either way, I think that today was a good day overall. I was finally away from the capital and my prison/room. Nothing can beat going on an adventure and gaining money while at it.
***AB’s POV***
Ever since that wyvern subjugation request I couldn’t get things to go my way. First, our group was completely destroyed by Dragon’s Descent and later on those highest ranking members that didn’t flee the obviously lost battle got into the winning clan and even started handling wyverns.
I wasn’t able to get into any other group and only half of my original party decided to stay with me. And right now we were running for our lives as three Darkfire Tigers were on our trail. I needed to get out of this forest as soon as possible. Those beasts would never leave the cover of trees.
As I was running through the forest I stumbled across a clearing. And in that clearing was a cabin. I had no idea why this place was here in the first place, but I could recognize the wyverns. Whoever was in this cabin, he or she is part of the King’s forces since nobody else had fully grown tamed wyverns.
“Everybody, we’re saved. There is a cabin here!”
“Thank heavens!”
I pushed the door open. It was only when I got close that I realized this was an inn. It seemed odd to have it in a place like this, but once inside there was nobody at the reception counter. Well it was the middle of the night, so they were mostly sleeping somewhere. I rang the bell and waited. Soon a person came walking down the stairs and upon seeing her, I froze. Her reaction was also similar to mine as she stopped and pointed her finger at me.
***NAOKO’S POV***
Why is someone ringing the bell in the middle of the night? Don’t they have anything better to do than to annoy me? Is this retribution for making them pay a gold coin? I checked the map and saw there were actually customers in the lobby. I dressed quickly and went downstairs to greet the guests, but when I saw them I couldn’t help but stop in surprise.
“What are you doing here? Why are you staying in this inn?”
“Why else would I be here? I own this place. So, welcome to the Lost Inn. We provide shelter for those that are lucky enough to stumble across this abode. How may I help you?”
This was the same guy that tried to cause me trouble at the wyvern subjugation request. He also started the war against Dragon’s Descent. Truly a foolish person. I’m surprised to see him here. After looking at the rest of the guests I could see that all of them were part of his party.
“I need shelter. There are three Darkfire Tigers behind us. So give me rooms.”
“There is no need to worry, with Byakko here, no feline would dare to approach this place. Currently there are two single bed rooms and five double bed rooms available, how much will you be booking?”
“Three double and two single rooms, I also want food, do you understand?”
“We provide breakfast, it is only natural. The price will be five gold for those rooms, as you can see on the board behind me, it is one gold per room.”
“5 gold?! That is highway robbery!”
“Sir, you must understand that this is literally in the middle of nowhere. If you do not want to pay, please leave. We do not welcome freeloaders.”
I saw him frowning and trying to come up with some excuses, but before he could say anything his party members all started paying for their rooms. Looks like after being so exhausted all of them were more than happy to pay this extravagant price to get some good sleep.
“Thank you for your patronage. There are other guests sleeping, so I would be grateful if you don’t make too much noise.”
“Thanks.”
In the end the guy leading them also paid for his room. I gave him the key and then returned to my room. It was a little unexpected, but I was able to gain some more profit.
Little did I know that soon the rumors about a mysterious INN would start spreading around Elicia and Vilikis. It told the story of a place you cannot find no matter how hard you search for it, but every so often, you would hear a story about a person stumbling across it while lost or merely travelling across forests and mountains. And if you do happen to come across it and sleep inside it, you would be able to wake up fully refreshed and will be able to find the way home safely since no monsters would ever be present around it after you leave.
