CHAPTER TWO – MAGIC APTITUDE
I began travelling with Nord-san and his party. They were on a quest to deliver official letter to the earl of the easternmost part of the kingdom of Elicia. They were really balanced party. Nord-san was acting as vanguard, Colt-san as magician/support and Blink-san as an assassin/thief.
After learning about my status I find out that with [Heaven’s eye] I could look at the description of everything I saw. With that I was able to learn about my skills and titles. I also tried to look at others’ status but I failed.
When I looked over my skills I realized what Thanatos-sama meant as both a curse and blessing in one. But as far as I am concerned it is more of a blessing than a curse.
[World Traveller] – Person that travelled between worlds
[Daughter of Death] – A person recognized as part of God of Death’s family – Increased EXP(+25%) from a killed unit. Death free pass, unable to age. Initial status values lowered. Status gradually increases
[Language Comprehension] – able to understand and use different language
[Inventory] – storage system – capacity unlimited
[Chuunibyou] – using over-the-top phrases and motions increases effect of skills and
magic (+50%)
[Tabula Rasa] – lowers the needed EXP to acquire new skills and levels.
The only thing that I couldn’t inspect was the sealed title. I assumed that this would
become available once I fulfill certain conditions, but for now it was out of my power. I was slightly concerned about the [Chuunibyou] skill, could this have been the fact that I am a bit of a Chuuni and it turned to a unique skill. The effect was good as well but the embarrassment would
be great whenever I use it.
“Naoko-chan, from what you told me, you don’t know much about this world. Since you
lost your memories could it be that you do not know about your magic aptitude? Everyone has at least one element of magic they are good at, so you should learn which one is yours. That way if you like to, you can learn magic once you grow stronger.”
“Oh yeah… you are right Colt-san. I have no idea if I can even use any magic. How can
you check that? Is there some special chant or magic item?”
“It is a piece of cake to check. You just have to hold each one of these magic crystals and put some mana inside them. If they glow you can use that element if they don’t, you can’t. You couldn’t have it any simpler.”
He took out seven different colored crystals and placed them next to me in a single line.
He picked the one closest to me and put it on my palm beginning to explain.
“There are seven attributes to magic you can use and in the order they are Earth, Fire,
Water, Wind and Light with Dark and Spirit magic being last two. This is also how often they occur with people here. Most common is Earth magic and least common is Spirit magic. Aside from the last two you can find pretty much anything you need to learn magic of the elements, even some of the most powerful spells as well.”
“Wow, that is very convenient, and here I thought I would have to find a teacher that
would be willing to teach me personally and for a cheap price since I cannot afford anything right now. If I can learn about it solely from books it makes things easier.”
“Indeed. Now following one by one try to find your attribute.”
The murky brown crystal in my hand was representing the Earth element. Imagining a
power inside me that should be mana flow into the stone I waited for some reaction but nothing happened. The crystal remained unchanged. Letting out a sigh I put it down and picked up the second one, a bright red one representing fire.
Just like the first one it showed no reaction. The same thing happened with the water, wind and light attributes. Colt-san looked rather sad when that happened. Well it was just my luck, I picked up the black crystal and immediately a black fog engulfed my hand. It appears that I have a talent for Dark magic, however I had no idea what it could do.
The last remaining crystal was clear, lastly I picked it up and just like the black crystal there was immediate reaction. It turned milky white in my hands. This was a good sign, two attributes are better than one.
“Oh my, twin attributes and the least known ones.I can’t tell if you are lucky or unlucky Naoko-chan. Having two attributes is really rare and I didn’t think I would come across another one this easily. I must say I am happy.”
Well there is some truth in his words. But I would like to think I am lucky if having twin attributes is rare then I am glad I have them. Even if there isn’t much you can learn about Dark and Spirit Magic I can just experiment by myself.
“Colt-san can you tell me what you know about Dark and Spirit magic? Also just how rare are twin attributes?”
“Aside from two of us there are around two dozen people officially known to be able to
use two attributes of magic and four that can wield three. The only ones known to be able to use more are the heroes summoned from another world, and even among them it is rare. Usually they have three attributes.”
So regarding that aspect I am below average than the rest of the heroes. Does that
mean that Hii-chan can also use different magic now? Thinking about it, did he even arrive at Doren.
“Did the heroes arrive?”
“Oh, so you know about them. Yeah, this time all twelve heroes were summoned, this is
something that hadn’t happened in over millennia. We are lucky when even three of them arrive. Moreover, all of them look rather strong. It has been about a month since they arrived and were presented to the public.”
A month had passed. Does that mean that I have lost a month somewhere, before Thanatos decided to fulfill my wish and send me here? I have quite the late start, not to mention
that I have my status lower than most people thanks to the [Daughter of Death] title.
“Catching up to them would be one heck of a job. It takes forever to catch up once you
are late to a release of the game. Please teach me everything you know about Dark and Spirit Magic Colt-san.”
He laughed at my impatient remark and rather ambitious goal, but nodded and offered
an explanation.
“Dark magic is the one that controls the status. You can lower the strength of an
opponent or make him feel weak or slow. It is called curse magic officially. And as for Spirit Magic nothing much is known aside being able to communicate with ghosts and in combination with Dark magic it can control the dead. But that magic is forbidden in all land.”
Hearing this was devastating. I had no means of attacking with magic at all. Sure the
Dark magic can be used to weaken the enemy but aside from that I had no way to finish him off unless I jumped right in and used my own weapon to kill him.
“I don’t have many options, do I? What about enchanting? Or summoning magic, are those considered Dark Magic? Also what about ghosts and spirits like elementals? Could they be used for attacking? Or using Spirit magic to take possession of animals and other creatures and act as a spy? Also is there a subtype of Dark magic which would allow me to hide and skip from shadow to shadow?”
I was desperate to find something to use this magic I have. I need some straw to hang
on. I want to be a Magic Girl and have a fancy transformation animation every time I would fight with magic. Well not maybe but still, I don’t want to be known as a Necromancer.
“Summoning Magic? Elementals? Possession? I have never heard of such magic. In my
many years of research I have never came across such things. Not even the Magic Research Institution has any data on those things you mentioned, so I don’t think it exists.”
He looked at me in utter confusion. I lost all hope. My dream of becoming a Magic Girl
was in grave danger right now. Either that, or this world’s magic was still too undeveloped.
