CHAPTER 231: THE BANQUET
“You two are definitely siblings. Your sinister and greedy looks are exactly the same. I really hope that nothing happens tonight and that this entire thing will pass peacefully. Let’s go, the time for the banquet is already here.”
Since I was behaving I let Vitou hold my hand as we walked towards the dining hall. Just like the last time I made sure to exude all the powers of my skills. I knew that the effect is by no means small and it even got me wondering if a fight would break out once I entered the hall. Now if that turns out to be true, all I would have to do is ‘accidentally’ get hurt and then demand that they compensate me for my physical and psychological trauma.
“His Highness, Vitou von Elicia has arrived. Duchess Naoko Maeda has arrived. Archduke Tenryuu has arrived.”
We were announced as we entered the dining hall. Sadly, the guests were all seated at the tables and that prevented the chaos from happening. I was counting on the party being like the ones in Elicia where people would stand around among the tables and not like this. Bleh, part of my plan was ruined. Well it doesn’t matter, there is still part of it in motion.
There were a lot of whispers about Vitou and me as we were led to our seating area which was just below the table for the royal family of Vilikis. The Princesses and Princes were already there, but the King, Queen and the Crown Prince were not. I looked around the room once I was seated and saw a lot of people blatantly staring at me while others turned slightly red and averted their gaze.
“You two should be lucky everyone is seated. The King approving a different style of entertainment this time around really worked in his favor without him even knowing it. He should count himself lucky for doing it.”
“You’re no fun. I could have won a jackpot if a fight had broken out. Vitou, you should learn how to make the best out of every opportunity.”
“She’s right you know, you must scheme a lot more to get a bigger profit.”
Well, this type of party also had its advantages. Sadly, there would need to be a scapegoat for the second part of my plan to work out. I saw Vitou shaking his head in disapproval upon hearing our words, but didn’t comment on it further. Luckily neither him nor the Archduke had any idea what I had planned on doing later on.
“His Majesty the King, Her Majesty the Queen have arrived. The Crown Prince has arrived.”
After they were seated and made their greetings and toasts the food was presented to us. From the way it was decorated it really put it into the first plan. But this banquet was strange, especially if you consider the fact that this was supposed to be done so that we could present the invitation to the royal family. I couldn’t help but worry as to what they are planning by changing things up this way. I also want to know when we will be presenting it, so that I can know when I need to start acting.
“Vitou, is this type of banquet normal? I thought the main point was the invitation presentation and not the food.”
“Don’t ask me, I am as baffled as you are. I assume it will be after the meal, like a conclusion to the banquet.”
That could be it. The meal passed, but there was no movement from the royal family. At times people would come and toast Vitou congratulating him on his engagement, but our hosts showed no sign of wanting us to present the invitation. I was starting to get worried. I don’t have much time, this banquet was slowly coming to an end and I needed to find a chance to make my move.
“Duchess Naoko, this Princess is reluctant to give Vitou to you, but seeing the two of you together I can only back away. I offer you this cup and toast to you hoping you would have a long time of happiness and love.”
I was startled by the sudden appearance of this little princess. I guess I shouldn’t think of her like that since she was two years older than me. I glanced at the cups in her hands. She said she was giving up, but her eyes said differently. I couldn’t help but be suspicious about her. I inspected the cups she gave to Vitou and me and smiled.
“Princess, thank you for your kind words. I will drink this cup in trust that Princess has given me. May the good relationship between our two countries last forever.”
I raised the cup and drank the wine she presented to me. I never thought she would help me in this way. When I inspected the drink I saw that the wine in my cup was poisoned, but Vitou’s wasn’t. The poison that she gave me would not have immediate effect so she thought she got away with it. Unfortunately she didn’t know that with my poison resistance, this would have no effect on me.
“Indeed. Duchess, hearing you say such words, this King is assured of the future. Wishing for a good relationship brings peace to the people. Call the dancers and singers and let us enjoy the night.”
Good, the more people there are in this place the better it will be. I saw the Princess smirking as she went back to her seat. I’m sorry, but if you plan on scheming against me, be prepared to pay the price. The only one that can successfully scheme against me is the despicable person sitting next to Vitou.
“My cute little Nao-chan, you just thought something bad about me, didn’t you?”
“I would never, in fact I was praising you. Just enjoy the performances and pay no attention to me. As you can see I am being nice and not causing any trouble.”
“That is what I am worried about! You’re being too nice all this time. Now telling him not to pay attention only makes me worry about you even more.”
Vitou interrupted before the Archduke could say anything at all. He did have a reason to worry about me, after all things are about to turn ugly. It’s just that he’s not aware how ugly they will be.
“Hey, it’s not like I can do anything with the two of you watching my every move. I don’t think I would even be able to sneak stuff into my inventory without you knowing. What other choice do I have aside from sitting here and behaving?”
I took another sip of my poisoned wine and shrugged. I guess the time now is as good as any other. Steeling my will I bit down the side of my tongue and hid the tears of pain that wanted to come out. I let some blood gather in my mouth and then started coughing. I used a handkerchief to cover my mouth and soon it became crimson red from the blood. Seeing that I rolled my eyes back and passed out. At the same time I transferred my consciousness to a maid standing immediately next to the door of the hall.
