CHAPTER 260: CAN I TRUST YOU?
“Nao-chan, it seems to me that you had quite the time here.”
“Did he take the corpse? What about the Archduke?”
Since they are here and there is no sign of the Archduke, I can only conclude that he is dealing with the person behind the scenes. I just don’t know what happened to the corpse of the Tyrannical Black Bear.
“Things didn’t go according to plan. I never saw any person around, but then all of a sudden, the corpse began rotting extremely fast. I had a bad hunch and melted it into nothingness. The Archduke said he found something and ran off somewhere.”
If he ran off, it means the other person won’t be coming back. I can trust him that he won’t let others off easily. He should know who that other person is. After all, he is much better informed about Black Hand than I am. I turned around and looked at the Black Baron who seemed to not believe anything we were saying.
“As you can see, your companion abandoned you and wanted that corpse more than your life. It won’t be too long before he is caught. A small bait like that bear can let me catch two big fish. If I used the Crystal Thunderbird like I wanted in the beginning, maybe I would be able to fish out the Black King himself.”
I saw a flash of greed in his eyes when I mentioned the bird. I suddenly got a wild idea. I just don’t know what the others will say about it. But first, let’s try and learn a bit more.
“You’re bluffing. All you can do is lie all day long. I don’t believe a word you’re saying.”
“Are you sure about that? Let’s say we make a deal. You tell me about the core members of Black Hand and I will let you go free. What do you think about it? It is not a bad deal. I won’t even ask about where the main base of the organizations is, nor where other secret locations are. I will be nice and skip asking about businesses that you are running. I just need you to tell me about the members.”
The idea I have is to let him lead me to others. Since he is not convinced, I will let him experience the abandonment firsthand. As for what happens to him later on, I don’t care. At the very least I will know one of the locations they gather at. If I share it with others, I’m sure it will count as a great contribution, maybe I will get rewarded as well.
“As if I would fall for that. Nobody would ever release a member of Black Hand, do you think I am a fool.”
“Yes I do. You have such a good deal in front of you and you are refusing it. You should know that I have more than enough authority to let you go.”
He didn’t say anything and just kept silent. He was showing his choice. I really miscalculated this time around. I thought that once he sees he’s been abandoned, he would break down. I didn’t think he would close off like this. Ah, it’s a pity. And I was able to get him riled up before. Now everything is ruined.
It was at the moment I was about to leave that the Archduke returned dragging behind a lifeless body. I was shocked to see this. He saw my line of sight and spoke up.
“He’s gone, this corpse is nothing but an empty shell.”
He said that as he tossed it into the cell. I took a look at the person. There was no wound to tell me how he died. I couldn’t help but give him a questioning look. I wanted someone to tell me just what happened here.
“No, that is impossible! Only the Black King can escape using this magic. You must have done something to make him lose all his soul. There is no way he would abandon me like this. I am the only talent that appeared in the past thirty years.”
“So what? You still think you are a priceless treasure? Are you talking about Life Vessel and such immortality? You are a dark/spirit magician just like him and the Black King and I assume many others in your organization. Why can’t they have the same magic as the Black King? He is not some omnipotent creature that others can’t copy. He is merely a human that is overly greedy. And you, you are less than a pawn. The only reason why you are called a core member is because the combination of dark and spirit magic is rare.”
I was sure this was the truth the moment I said those words out loud. Otherwise, how can such an immature and reckless person hold an important title? When he looked away, I knew I was spot on. He must be well aware of it, and yet, because he is aware of it, he can act like a spoiled brat and count on others to clean up his mess. It is all thanks to being a rarity in magic combination.
“Nao-chan, what are you planning to do now?”
Vitou whispered in my ear wanting to know if I was still planning on releasing him or would I keep him here. I thought about it for a bit; he knew about Life Vessel and that it allowed the Black King to live for so long, but from his behavior upon seeing the corpse, it may not be the whole truth.
There must be something I don’t know. I turned away and stood in front of the Archduke. From what I observed, he should be opposing the Black Hand and has the most information about it among all of us. I looked up and watched his eyes. He’s a person I can never read. His actions always confuse me and there are never any clear emotions that he shows.
“Do you need him?”
I asked him, already expecting the answer. Sure enough, he shook his head in denial.
“Then, can I trust you?”
This trust meant a lot. Can I trust him to deal with this mess? Can I trust him and let him stay by my side either as a brother or a friend? Can I trust him to not let me be hurt with his actions? For the first time I saw an unbridled smile on his face and eyes full of pampering affection.
“My little sister can always trust me.”
I smiled in return and summoned the Reaper’s Scythe. The prisoner no longer has any value, so I might as well fulfill the death order of a Black Hand member. With a swift move the scythe passed through him and he no longer breathed, his soul nonexistent.
