CHAPTER 274: CELEBRATION PARTY
“Nao-chan, you’re here. I didn’t think you would actually come. I thought I would have to send someone to bring you personally.”
Although this dinner party was announced abruptly, there were still a lot of people that arrived to congratulate Vitou on his successful purchase. I didn’t think this was a reason to party, but hey, if they like it, they should party. I am not stopping anything. I’m here mainly for the food.
“There is no reason not to come. I am also looking forward to the delicacies that the chefs prepared. If you need me, I will be in that corner. I don’t want to attract attention and under no circumstances do I want others bothering me to sell them wyverns. You must tell them that there are no more wyverns for sale.”
I left him to deal with the guests and went to the table with snacks. I haven’t had a decent meal all day and I wanted to eat my fill here, since the food was free.
While I was munching on some finger food, a person I didn’t want to mingle with, joined me in eating.
“Naoko-chan, you really helped us this time, but couldn’t you have cut the price some more? For old friends’ sake? This is not a small expenditure, although it could be counted as a necessary one.”
“Your Majesty, this is already a low price. If I sold it to anyone else, I would have charged them 3000 gold coins or even more for a baby wyvern.”
The king was able to sneak in unnoticed and struck up a conversation with me. Lately, I made sure to keep my distance. I didn’t want to have much interaction with him ever since I started having doubts about his thoughts and actions. If he wants to start a war with Vilikis, I don’t want to have anything to do with him.
But now that he is here, I should try and find out some more. There should be no harm in trying to pry into his head and figure out just what on earth he is planning.
“Those monsters are really useful. This time, the fighting force of our country became much stronger. Well, we are still behind your little group in terms of number of wyverns, but soon we will all be one family. There is no need to worry about you.”
Hah, that is what you think. If you didn’t push me so far, we might have been good friends, especially since Vitou doesn’t seem as bad as I first thought. However, in the future, there will be barely any interaction between us.
“Your Majesty, Elicia is strong and there is not much difference whether you add these wyverns or not. I merely wanted some money to invest into Sunset Islands. As I have become a governor of that area, I want to help it develop. Even if it is just a bit. I don’t want to be called out for being neglectful. In front of the wealth and power of the Kingdom, what is this mere amount?”
“You really know how to speak sweet words. I am looking forward to the changes you will bring. You shouldn’t worry about what others are saying about you. Especially those from the south. If Vilikis tries to bully you when you go to Sunset Islands, remember that you have Elicia behind you. I will not allow my daughter in law to be bullied. She is only allowed to bully others.”
I smiled awkwardly hearing his words, but raised my vigilance. When I go to Sunset Islands for an official visit, I must be more careful. Those Islands are closer to the land of Vilikis than Elicia, but there is no information about Vilikis ever coveting the area. If the King wants to cause misunderstanding between the two kingdoms, this should be a good place to start.
“I will keep that in mind, but there shouldn’t be anything wrong. That area has nothing interesting to let anyone fight for it. It is also one of the reasons why I chose the islands to be my territory. I like it when things are peaceful.”
“You never know what might happen and peace is something that doesn’t last forever. Just look at the attitude they held during your visit to Tiremia. The King indulges Princess Zimo a lot and it is no big secret that she likes my Vitou. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure that you are never wronged by them.”
He said a few more words before leaving me alone. I don’t know what was the point of that conversation. If he wanted to show affection, he should have done it differently. If I had no idea about his little schemes, I would have probably felt better knowing he was protecting me, but now I couldn’t help but become even more wary of him.
I made a decision. If nothing happens during my trip to Sunset Islands, I’ll treat it as the King not really wanting to start a war and using Vitou and me as an excuse to justify his actions. However, if we get attacked by people of Vilikis, or some other inexplicable thing happens that implicates us for no apparent reason, it will prove that there is really a war being brewed under the surface and that King Erik is not a good guy. Not that he is right now.
The outcome will be known in time. I just hope that an all out war can be avoided. If anything breaks out, I want to remain as a neutral party. Even more so when Sunset Islands becomes an independent entity.
“Why are you in a daze? Let’s go and eat some proper food.”
“Vitou, what will you do if a war breaks out?”
His smile disappeared instantly. I don’t know if my words caught him off guard or if he knew something, but looking at him there was a hint of worry and sadness in his eyes.
“Why bring up such ill words during a celebration? There will be no war in the future. Elicia and Vilikis have been allies for many years. There is no need for any fighting.”
I narrowed my eyes. He knows something, but I can see that he does not want to go to war. At the very least I can be assured that he is a good person and a decent ruler. If he says there will be no war, I will believe that he has a way to prevent it and stop his father from scheming.
“Good, I don’t want wars to happen. Even if they do, I plan on staying away. I want to remain neutral on all points. Even if some may curse me and call me out, I don’t plan on intervening. However, if they attack me or my people, I will be ruthless to them.”
“Don’t worry. As long as I am around, I will make sure such a thing doesn’t happen.”
I smiled and went to the dining hall to enjoy the dinner. For now, I can still enjoy and relax. I have set up a lot of things and I only need to wait for the test of the Church to pass before I can move on with my plans.
