CHAPTER 29: THE ASSAILANT

I can’t believe that I let Thanatos-sama’s sudden appearance leave me in a complete daze. I had no idea what that person was planning but since he wasn’t staying around I will not ask him to stay. I currently had more important things to do. Mainly finish this request and then figure out just how Bitch-chan is involved in all this.

I reached the designated town soon enough and delivered the package that was requested from the guild. These types of requests really were the easiest ones for me, since it was no different than taking a walk to the next town over thanks to my inventory skill.

As I was strolling through the streets and buying ingredients for my ever growing stock of food I happened to overhear many girls gossiping about something as they were going from the city gates towards the center of the city.

“Did you see him? He is so handsome.”

“Does he have someone already? He seems so mysterious. I wonder who he is waiting
for.”

I became curious because this type of gossip was not normal. Too many people were talking about it to be something ordinary. Since this person wasn’t going anywhere I decided to finish my shopping and head out of town while also going to check out this overly handsome and mysterious man.

“Naoko-chan finally you are here. How can you leave me waiting for so long?”

I froze upon hearing that voice. I recognized it immediately because that same voice managed to surprise me once before. I turned to see and sure enough, the man everyone was talking about is the same person as that man I met in the forest when I first summoned Daphira.

“What are you doing here, how did you know I was here in the first place? Are you following me? That is creepy.”

“Oh come on, I had no plans to meet you anytime soon, but a little birdie told me that you have something interesting going on and I decided to lend a hand. In any case, even if you deny my help I will follow you, and you and I both know that you will not be able to get away from me.”

I was annoyed that he got the truth right. Well to be honest I was kind of glad since this will be an opportunity to get to know this person better. I didn’t realize it, but ever since he approached me all the eyes in the surroundings became focused on me as well. When I became conscious of it, I immediately looked down and began walking away.

“In that case do join me. I am leaving this place and heading back to Orzak.”

“Could it be that you do not like to be in the center of the attention? I never would have expected this trait to come out from the Queen after hearing about rumors of her.”

“Shut up!”

I sped up to get away from the crowd and basically ran to the forest that was in between two towns. I was hyper aware of his presence that was following me silently. Despite him being here I didn’t dare be neglectful, and had all my tracking and sensing skills activated. I may no longer be in danger of the angry guardians, but there was still someone targeting me.

It was thanks to that skill that I was able to catch a glimpse at an arrow that was aiming for the man behind me. Without thinking I pushed him out of the way and deflected the arrow with a dagger I had ready.

“Naoko-chan, I know that I am handsome, but this is no reason for you to tackle me. I
must say that I do not want to go further with anyone that I do not know well. Call me old fashioned but this is simply how I am.”

“Huh? What are you going on about? Someone just attacked us.”

It was only then that I realized that I was sitting atop him in really ambiguous way.
Without a pause, I jumped up completely red, but quickly refocused and looked for any presence of the attacker. So far he had never attacked me directly. I almost thought that this was not the same person, but upon inspecting the arrow I saw the same dark green aura.

Whoever this was he is becoming bolder in his actions.

“You won’t find anyone with that skill. There are no presences around us at all. Also, you don’t have to worry about me, an arrow shot from anything but a Legendary rank weapon can’t harm me. This old man is much stronger than you think.”

“That stinks, and here I thought I would be able to catch my assailant since he decided to become so bold to attack directly. Also next time I won’t push you out of harm’s way, thanks for telling me that. We need to hurry, I want to meet with the Guild Master.”

“Naoko-chan, don’t be so cold. Thank you for saving me, come on I’ll make it up to you. How about it? Later tonight I’ll make it all up for you, just leave it all to me I promise you that all your worries will pass by the morning.”

I stopped in my tracks. The way he said that was way too ambiguous and thanks to my overly active imagination I couldn’t help but turn as red as a tomato. Keeping my head down I began slowly walking towards the town. I could hear his low chuckle but I didn’t dare to turn around and glare at this mysterious man of mine.

The whole way back my mind was full of thoughts about this mysterious man, who is he? How can he just walk into my life and act as if nothing is new? How can he be so handsome and mysterious at the same time? And what on earth is his name? I tried several times to learn it but every time he would evade the question and not answer so I had no choice but to think of him as a mysterious man.

Since I wanted to learn more about him, I tried to use my skill [Heaven’s Eye] but nothing happened. I tried to do this once before with Nord-san when I first met them and failed as well. It seems that this skill cannot be used on living things.

If I were to conclude this day so far I would say that two people attacked me today. My assailant that tried to take my life and another one that attacked my heart.
