CHAPTER 81: HIDDEN IN THE MIST
“It is quite the impressive magic I must say. Melting the earth and creating lava. Unless one had almost perfect fire resistance, it would be hard to avoid certain death upon getting caught in it.”
I needed to buy some time to set up my counterattack. As I was talking to him, I made sure to gather all the water elementals that I could as my plan relied on their power. I was going to completely blind the Crown Prince and I will use the lave he made to accomplish that.
“No such person exists; even prominent fire magicians couldn’t withstand my attack. Even if they evade it like you did in the end they fall victim to it eventually.”
He did have a good point there. I assume that staying mid-air is even harder for those that have no help of elementals, luckily I was given spirit magic and right now I was more or less ready to move on with my plan.
“Then how do you deal with water magic?”
I asked him that question and immediately made the water elementals make their move. From the earth several geysers rose and a torrential rain began falling. As it collided with the lava it immediately evaporated and created a lot of steam in the process.
I fell down inside the steam and using water and earth elementals created a steady foothold. It was still way too hot, to a point where it was very painful, but I had to bear with it in order to win. I only needed so much time to summon Yoru.
“Something like this will not be able to stop me. All I need to do is blow away the mist.”
Before he could finish that sentence, a loud howl spread through the arena sending a chilly sensation filled with fear. The next moment a strong gust of wind blew the steam away showing only myself standing firmly on the ground. There was no sight of anything else.
“I should have known you wouldn’t be stopped by that. Then how about this?”
If the past screen was due to steam rising from lava, this time I called upon elementals to create a thick morning mist that would not go away with a small breeze. I made sure to tell them to keep the mist for as long as they can. As soon as the visibility dropped down I made my move.
The goal of this tactic was to use Yoru’s special power called Shadow Sneak. It is an ability that will allow him to completely immerse himself within one’s shadow for a period of time. The downside is that he has to physically be connected with the person’s shadow to activate it.
Technically speaking, I could have used light elementals to create a large shadow that will be easy to approach, but that would mean I would have to show Yoru, which would lessen the chances of victory.
“Mist, fog… it doesn’t matter to me since I can always blow it away.”
The wind picked up and it became harder to keep the fog as heavy as it was, but I knew that I could make it. I just need a moment. To ensure victory, I used [Blink] and closed the distance in an instant and made use of his blind spot. Making our shadows meet I snapped my fingers and Yoru jumped from mine and into the Crown Prince’s shadow. The very next moment I was hit with an explosion of fire and wind.
I released the magic holding up the fog and asked the light elementals to heal me. I was
in a very bad state right now. The scene that was revealed upon the fog clearing out looked straight out of apocalyptic movie. Hardened magma mixed with mud on the floor, several fires still burning and both the Crown Prince and I standing looking worn out and roughed up. He, however, looked to be in much better state than me who was riddled with wounds.
“I am not done just yet. I will show you the last of the four great flying sword skills. Consider yourself lucky, no other person on this continent can do this.”
This was it, the moment I was waiting for, the last diversion I needed to create for my plan to succeed. Taking out one of the several swords I had in my inventory, I raised it up and held it above my head. This technique is called Silver Storm – Maelstrom and it uses magic to shatter a sword into countless tiny blades which then hit the opponent and pierce through them.
Depending on how much mana was infused before shattering the sword, the depth at which the blades will pierce will change.
As I raised my sword, several explosions sounded outside the arena startling me, the
Crown Prince and almost everyone in the audience present. Looking over the walls of the arena I could see smoke rising high up and the next moments bells in the city tower began to sound the alarm of an enemy attack.
What the heck?! Couldn’t it have waited for like five minutes before starting? I was just upon the verge of winning this match. Seriously, right now I was so close to getting that armor and everything is ruined because of that disturbance.
“Naoko-san, the battle is over. Please lend me a hand in defending the city.”
I was already planning on doing that. Whoever did this needs to be punished severely for messing with my sure win plan.
“I’ll meet you ahead. I don’t plan on waiting for you to show up. This person screwed up my plan, so I will make sure he regrets it for the rest of his life. Don’t try to catch up.”
I teleported to the top of the arena and after locating the nearest place of attack, I moved swiftly while gripping my sword Amethyst. I was preparing to deal with the enemy swiftly and find the mastermind, since there were several places the city was under attack.
