We entrusted Gantz to Lord Leister and his son and returned to Ares with everyone else.
Only Sharon stayed behind a little longer, in charge of escorting the surrendering soldiers back to Ares.
「Serena, you did great.」
「It was really hard, you know, Alan.」
At our base in Ares, Serena ran right up and threw herself into my arms.
Normally she keeps her feelings under tighter control, but with Sharon away she must have let herself relax. I can’t blame her. The burden of being the one left in charge of Ares had been heavy.
I peeled her arms from around my neck somehow and turned with Serena toward Viscount Zeifried, waiting on one knee to be greeted.
I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t wanted to enjoy Serena’s warmth a little longer—but getting my neck sniffed in public doesn’t quite seem appropriate for the moment.
