Chapter 291 – All-Heaven Festival Contest Final Stage “Demon King Castle Bloody Field” (13) / The White North Pole

291 – All-Heaven Festival Contest Final Stage “Demon King Castle Bloody Field” (13) / The White North Pole

The “Great Saint” Panacea.

An outstanding former member of the world’s number one party, in this era when Black Sorcerers and White Sorcerers are treated coldly in the adventurer industry.

Owner of overwhelmingly quick wits and the skills to make full use of them, as well as a lively and friendly personality, glossy black hair, and good looks to boot.

Her ability to heal her teammates is also one of her highlights, being as proficient at it as she is.
After all, even if one of her allies’ arms were to be cut off, she can heal it.

With a level of White Magic capable of regrowing lost limbs, anyone can see and feel how effective her magic is.

And since they were also related to her high level in White Magic, she can also grant extremely powerful positive effects to her allies.

Even those who look down on other White Sorcerers cannot deny her.

A mutant-like genius.

Though such criticism about her does indeed exist, that alone isn’t enough for me.

The level of skill that supports her success thus far cannot be acquired without tremendous effort, and I don’t think that Aerial would choose his allies based on their raw talent alone.

Ever since I found out that I am a Black Sorcerer, Panacea’s existence has been a source of hope.

It doesn’t matter if you get unlucky and don’t get the Job you want.

If you can contribute to the party and help your allies win, you’ll still be a fine adventurer.

I tried my best to achieve that, but… I guess I failed.

I ended up leaving the Fenix Party.

But fortunately, the road did not end there.

So now I’m standing here.

The Hero Altreed, who I admire… Panacea, the hope for my unfortunate Job… and my teacher Lucifer…

On this day when everyone I have ever looked up to has gathered, I will overcome everything.

The former Demon King’s Army and the legendary adventurers are acting separately.

They will not cross each other except on rare occasions.

I will leave the former Demon King Army to my allies, and turn my attention to the adventurer’s side for the time being.

Not much time has passed since adventurer Lem left this battlefield, so there haven’t been any unexpected changes.

The battles on the adventurer’s side can be roughly divided into four.

The first one: Current World Ranked 1st “Blade Alchemist” Louie, “Gale Hero” Ewan, World Ranked 4th Hunter Lily, and “Frost Hero” Bella VS Former World Rank 1st “Silver Bow” Orion and “Sacred Knight” Maximillian.

The second one: Current World Ranked 1st Samurai Masamune VS Former World Ranked 1st “Great Warrior” Hector.

The third one: Current World Ranked 1st “Crimson Wizard” Michel VS Former World Ranked 1st “Good Witch” Rogestilla.

And the fourth one: “Water Hero” Wraith, “Destroyer” Fran, “Flame Hero” Fenix, and the World Ranked 1st “Storm Hero” Aerial VS Former World Ranked 1st “Great Saint” Panacea.

It’s in this fourth battle that I plan to intervene.

When Altreed was defeated, Wraith and the others went back to their respective starting points on the adventurer side, and after I left the stage, they shifted their attention toward Panacea once again.

Even so, I find it a little strange that they haven’t reached her yet…

But I’d soon find out the reason for that.

Even though they used Fire, Wind, Water, and so on to keep her in check, they haven’t gone all in.

— Was that because they knew that Lemegeton would be summoned to this field?

Strangely, the Four Great Spirit Contractors here are aware of both my true identity and the existence of the ring.

Such things can be seen by the fact that the Demon King herself was participating while wearing the ring.

If so, picking up what would happen next wouldn’t be so difficult for them, would it?

They aren’t just considering my participation. They’re actually relying on my Black Magic.

I have to live up to their expectations.

But before that…

I heard the sound of something metallic bouncing off something else behind me.

「Well done.」

「Ha!」

The arrow that “Silver Bow” Orion had shot through space with his Magic Tool was about to pierce my back.

But a shield-wielding Black Sorcerer Minotaur blocked it.

Considering Orion is still a threat, I’m glad I summoned him ahead of time.

The one under direct control of the Chief of Staff of the Demon King’s army… The “Black Explorer” Foras.

Born as a Minotaur, a race that has an easy time awakening to Jobs related to direct combat, he instead awakened as a Black Sorcerer, and has spent most of his days receiving the kind of cold treatment one would expect.

Even so, I decided to employ him as an ally during the raid because his circumstances hadn’t caused him to lose heart, and instead chose to polish his skills as a Black Sorcerer.

「I’ll leave him to you for a while.」

I wanted to start doing my thing as a Black Sorcerer, but I had to do something about Orion’s arrows first. Therefore, I’ll have my trusted subordinates protect me.

Even so, Orion is shooting not only at me but at Lily and the others as well…

He even took a few shots at the Demon King right after that.

With a sinister expression on his face, Agares swept his arrows away with his hand as if it was a sword, but Orion’s presence was still a threat in the sense that it disturbs my concentration.

At any rate, I need to focus…

「― ”Sky Garden”」

Aerial immediately activated his Esoteric Spirit Art.

This Spirit Art can throw the continuity of space into disorder.

If you take a step, you usually get to one step in front of you.

However, in this space that has been thrown into chaos by the “Storm Hero”, one step ahead may very well take you to the middle of the sky above us.

The purpose of this Spirit Art is clear.

Aerial’s plan was to make it so Panacea’s White Magic can’t easily reach her allies.

Being able to activate White or Black Magic accomplishes nothing if the Magical Energy released by such spells can’t reach their target.

The simple reasoning is that if the path that her Magical Energy needs to go through is turned into a chaotic maze, it’ll be difficult for it to reach her allies.

From the fact that he has put such a Spirit Art into operation, I can see just how much Aerial respects Panacea’s power.

And this Spirit Art has one more advantage…

「…」

A grim expression appears on Panacea’s face for a moment.

The reason for that was that the Black Magic spell I unleashed in front of me had hit her from behind.

She uses her “Full Resist” in addition to counter-attacking with her own White Magic, but…

.Her spells don’t reach me.

The space changed in an instant, and by the time she counterattacked, the path to me had been cut off.

「Pana, we of all people know your skills best. You’re not getting careless on me, are you?」

Some people in the audience might argue that a Spirit Art of this magnitude is too much to deal with a single opponent, but Panacea is very well worth it.

「Masa!」

「Hmm!」

The White Magic support for Hector should have expired by now.

This is a good opportunity for Masamune.

Since we don’t have anyone on healing duty, Masamune is the only one of those two that has accumulated wounds over the course of their battle.

Aerial’s plan to bring the match to a quick close is the right thing to do.

— Wait.

For some reason, the back of my head seemed to object to this.

I don’t know why, but I felt like we made the wrong choice.

I started feeling around for the origin of this sensation, and after some thought, I finally arrived at a certain idea.

— Isn’t that being the “right thing to do” a little bit too easy to understand?

Because that’s right. There are some things you should never forget.

The Aerial Party is the one who knows the most about Panacea.

Then… Wouldn’t Panacea also be the one who knows the most about the Aerial Party?

Though it was just a hunch, I tried to warn Masamune, but… It was already too late.

With a powerful upward swing, Masamune manages to cut off both of Hector’s hands as he raises his own sword.

But Hector’s sword still continued to slash downwards…

「Nuh… Ooooooh!」

Masamune jumps back at the very last moment.

However, his left arm was cut off.

Magic particles flow from the wound instead of blood.

「…What’s the meaning of this?」

Was it Masamune or Aerial who said that?

Not even the Aerial Party knows.

To put what just happened simply…

Hector’s wounds healed at the exact same time as they were being made, so his downward slash was able to continue its path as if nothing had happened.

But here’s where it gets weird.

Aerial’s “Sky Garden” was still preventing Panacea’s White Magic from functioning properly.

What made no sense was that, despite this, Hector was still receiving the protection of White Magic.

When I tried to fit in the puzzle pieces that didn’t seem to match…

「…A pre-made continuous recovery effect?」

Panacea probably didn’t hear me, but she still smiled.

But this was likely to be an armchair theory.

For White and Black Magic alike, there are two types of magic construction formulas: The pre-made one and the linked one.

The main difference between them is that one establishes all of its resulting effects before activating it, while the other one keeps the flow of Magical Energy going even after the spell has reached its target.

The former is like hitting a target with a fire arrow, while the latter is like making sure a piece of firewood keeps burning after already being ignited.

Both have advantages and disadvantages, but in White Magic, it’s impossible to create a continuous recovery effect with a pre-made formula.

Healing wounded allies requires a linked formula, which continuously applies Healing Magic to them.

But that’s not something that can be done with a pre-made formula.

It is impossible to build a detailed formula determining when, at what time, and where to heal a targeted ally before they even get hurt in the first place.

No matter how powerful your Healing Magic is, if you pour too much of it on a healthy body, you can actually end up harming them instead.

Unless you have the ability to predict the future, you can’t continuously heal the wounds of your allies with White Magic while under the effects of something like Sky Garden.

Therefore, a “pre-made continuous recovery effect” is impossible.

If I had to do it, there would be no other way but to establish a connection between me and my allies with a line of Magical Energy in a linked formula.

But what if… what if the impossible could be made possible?

Then there would be no point in sealing Panacea away.

Her White Magic would be able to heal her allies automatically as long as she poured enough Magical Power into it, all according to the formula she constructed at the beginning.

But she doesn’t have the ability to predict the future.

In other words, she must have predicted that a battle situation similar to the current one was going to happen, and put together a magic formula in advance based on that.

Regarding the earlier scene, Panacea must have read that Masamune would mistakenly assume that she had been rendered useless and then he would cut off both of Hector’s hands, so she prepared her spell in advance so that Hector’s hands would be healed at the very next moment that happened.

「B-but, Chief of Staff… That’s…」, said Foras in a trembling voice.

「Ah…」

Right. If that were the case, then a surprising fact comes to light.

If Panacea was able to create a pre-made continuous recovery effect before this final match even started…

Then why didn’t she prepare for the battle between Black Sorcerer Lem and the “Unyielding Hero” Altered in advance as well?

The advantage of the pre-made construction formula is that there is no need to establish a link between the caster and their target with a line of Magical Energy.

In other words, even if her target was under the effects of their own “Resist”, Panacea’s White Magic would’ve still reached them.

Altreed would’ve been able to block my Black Magic with his “Resist” while being able to receive Panacea’s White Magic.

But that’s not how it happened.

Then how?

The answer is easy to come up with, but the answer itself is terrifying.

No, more than terrifying, it’s worthy of praise.

The surprise to learn that there’s a human being in this world who could do such a thing is very real.

After seemingly having reached the same conclusion, Aerial cancels his “Sky Garden”.

「Pana… Did you…?」

「…In the short time between when dad left the stage and Old Man Air locked her up with his Esoteric Spirit Art…」

「Did you make the impossible possible?」

All three heroes approaching her derive the same answer.

「It looked like I wouldn’t be able to win if I didn’t do that. So I had no choice but to do it.」

The “Great Saint” Panacea affirmed that as if it wasn’t a big deal.

『Ahaha. Amazing! Following your classification, that child is already in the realm of “White Sorcery”.』

It is said that Black Sorcery trumps Black Magic.

Then, could the same be said for White Sorcery?

That means that Panacea has now become a Wizard of a higher level.

With her only reason being that she was driven by necessity, she had made the impossible possible.

In an instant, she had reached a level of magic unreached by mankind.

The ultimate Support-class Wizard that cannot even be sealed away.

She now looks at me.

「If Lem was here, things might have turned out differently.」

Did you say this to me because I’m “a Black Sorcerer like Lem”?

「Hmm…」

I deliberately point my wand at her.

「Let me show you how different things will turn out from now on.」

Just like it was when I faced Altreed, is this happiness I feel a result of being able to follow the steps of someone I’ve admired for so long, even after becoming an adult?

Panacea laughs belligerently.

「I’m looking forward to it.」
