The whole corridor was lined with magical traps, while the trap rooms had physical ones as well, and to top it off, monsters waiting inside. Clearly this cathedral’s defenses were built like a dungeon against monsters: confuse intruders, split them up, slow them down, and whittle away their strength with continuous damage.

Most likely, someone had just remodeled it for their own use and taken up residence here. Which means the underground really is a massive dungeon… That would explain why their elite forces are fairly high-level. But against a true great dungeon, it’s too dangerous. They’d only be able to clear the upper monsters, gaining just a few magic stones. That must be why they wanted the frontier stones so badly, why they tried to monopolize them.
