Premonition of Death

　When I reach 500 meters before the lake, the forest ends and I arrive at an open area. This is bad. This is certainly a place where I can easily spot any enemies, but it is also a place where I can easily be spotted. I have come this far. After a moment’s hesitation, I make up my mind and take a step forward. I move in a half run while using presence perception in all directions, and as I get close to the lake, I can hear the sound of a group running over from the forest to the left of the lake. As I put myself on guard, I see a group of monkeys running in my direction, letting out cries all the while.

Crap! That is a troop of red-haired clawed monkeys. There are twenty, thirty… more than fifty of them. As I put my sword away in my storage, lightening up myself and getting ready to run away, at that moment, I see a horse running this way from the depth of the forest. It seems that the horse is chasing the monkeys around.

The horse’s target is probably the monkeys, so I guess I should just run into the forest where I have just come from, hide myself and wait it out. However, the monkey troop changes direction before the lake and comes after me. Damn, they’ve got to be kidding me.

「Buoooooooooooooo!」

Using the opening when the monkey is being eaten, I run away and manage to gain some distance, but *crunch, crunch*  the horse eats up the monkey in the blink of an eye with its huge mouth and chases around me and the monkeys again, a single monkey must have been not enough.

It is not an opponent I can fight and beat. To begin with, it will not even be a fight. I would simply get eaten one-sidedly. As I run away while being seized by the fear of death, I sense a terrifying fluctuation of magical energy from behind. It is so scary that I don’t want to turn around, but as I turn around to look at the horse in the middle of my run, it seems to have released some kind of magic from the soles of its forelegs. !? Suddenly, I get hit by a windstorm and lose the freedom of my body. The monkeys around me are also knocked to the ground after spinning several times in the air.

Covered in dust, I focus on keeping my distance from the horse. *Crunch, crunch* The horse is eating a monkey, and there is another monkey pinned under its forelegs. I go into the forest and watch the horse from the shadow of a bush. When the horse is done eating the monkeys, perhaps satisfied, it slowly walks away.

Damn, I heard nothing about such a monster at the Adventurers’ Association. Is it the ruler of this area? I wonder if the snake monster, which is said to be in the lake, is even stronger than it.

The monkey monsters go and run into the depth of the forest without even looking to the left or right. For a while, I erase my presence and keep an eye on my surrounding area. Not only the monkeys, but all the other monsters in the surrounding area seem to have scattered somewhere in fear of the horse. In a sense, this is an opportunity. As it means that the only thing I have to watch out for is the monster in the lake. Alright, I have come this far. If it is a monster that lives in the lake, there should be no problem as long as I don’t get too close. Looking around the surrounding area, I spot a rocky area on the right side of the lake. I begin to move slowly and carefully. I put my sword into my storage, but take out my steel shield just in case. I arrive at the rocky area. I am holding my breath, but there is no sign of monsters at all.

As I move closer to the rocky area, I see that it is covered in moss. As I appraise it, it is without a doubt propagating magic moss. The quality is mid. No adventurers have come here for many years. Which means I can take as much as I want. I put away my shield, take out an empty barrel, and put the moss into the barrel one after another. From time to time, I concentrate on presence perception, but as expected, there are no monsters around. I put propagating magic moss into the barrel again. After about 30 minutes, the barrel is full. It is stronger than the Lord of the Labyrinth of Amberlius, huh. Even the hero party cannot beat this guy, can they? Right away, my appraisal ends up getting repelled and the snake finds out that I can move. Alright, time to beat a retreat with all my might. The moment I weave my magical energy and am about to retreat, I sense an enormous vortex of magical energy behind me. Ah, this is impossible. I might really die here. A being that is far superior than the horse I encountered just before is behind me. Looks like I am done for. Truly between the devil and the deep blue sea. However, just know that I will not take my death lying down. I will run, run and keep on running.

As I prepare for death and get ready to run away, the serpent in front of me slowly begins to back away into the water. It seems to be wary of the monster behind me. I see, if I can somehow get them to fight, I might be able to escape. As I am having such a thought, the creature moving behind me comes about five meters beside me and begins to drink water from the lake.

It turns out to be a huge white deer. Rather than white, it looks more like it is glowing. I can somehow sense that it is an overwhelmingly powerful being, but unlike the serpent in front of me, I feel no fear toward it. The serpent is wary of the deer, but the deer does not seem to pay it any mind. Just how great of an existence is it that it does not recognize a rank 89 monster as an enemy?

The serpent slowly retreats and disappears into the depths of the lake. The deer doesn’t even spare me a glance. Even if this deer has no such intentions, result-wise, I have my life saved by this guy. It is so scary that I cannot bring myself to appraise it. I take some rock salt out of my storage, place it on a rock, and depart that place. When I look back some distance away from the lake, I see that the deer is licking the rock salt.

「Phew!」

Having moved away from the lake and made it back to the entrance to the forest from which I had come, I take a deep breath, and then, sweat breaks out all over my body. A rush of fatigue hits my body. That was naïve of me. There is a reason why the adventurers are staying away from that place. No matter how skilled and well equipped you are, it is not a place a porter can visit alone. No, even if you bring some escorts, they will only be a hindrance. If anything, it is better to go there alone whilst being lightly equipped. In the end, I don’t think I will ever come to this place again. I steady my breath and set out for home.
