Berserker – Part 03
This small country was the birthplace of the first Housman.
Though classified as a country, its territory was very tiny, governed by just one city. It functioned less like a traditional nation and more like a self-governed city-state, like a smaller version of the Independent Trade City.
The entire area was surrounded by what seemed like hastily constructed moats and earthen walls. Even at dusk, many armed soldiers could be seen at the gates, walls, and watchtowers, lighting torches. The gatekeeper explained that they were on high alert due to the relentless merger demands from the former Empire.
“If it weren’t for this, you would’ve been denied entry,” the gatekeeper said, waving the letter of introduction that Hugo had arranged for them.
Leading the horses across a bridge over the moat, they passed through a gate built into the earthen walls and continued down a roughly paved road. Stone houses dotted the place
