“After this battle, the Militant Nation will assist in rebuilding the Independent Trade City,” Zenobia rushed to Hannibal’s aid. “We promise compensation. So please, listen to the captain’s request!”
But her words did little to quell the storm. The crowd’s frenzy remained unchecked, and her attendants—Doris, Charlotte, and Arvie—moved to shield her, ensuring no harm would come to their charge.
Hannibal and Hugo stood silent. Patty clung tightly to Lisa, trembling. Lisa, for her part, was utterly lost. How could anyone possibly calm this chaos?
The deafening noise scared the children into crying.
“Do you understand what you’re asking?! You’re trying to conscript us into a war!”
“This city is supposed to remain neutral. Free from outdated concepts!”
“We’re citizens of a free city! We have the right to refuse—”
“That’s exactly why we must fight!”
The voice cut through the chaos like a blade.
