Heavy as Lead – Part 01

Thick volcanic ash billowed across the pitch-black sky like clouds, shrouding the moon in a mottled gray veil. The faint light that broke through barely touched the plains below, leaving them steeped in darkness.

In the void of the night, a single point of light flickered. A lone glow in the blackened land, illuminating two figures.

Though differing in height, both wore the same black garments, heads and faces concealed beneath black veils. Their eyes, the sole part exposed to the night air, gleamed darkly. Their attire blended seamlessly into the shadows, thinning their presence.

Using their source of light, they peered into the ravine, whispering.

“So this is the Scar?”

“Affirmative. The locals call it that.”

Their voices belonged to a man and woman. Their breath came out in white puffs, curling in the wind.
