“I’m honored by your words,” Cecily said. But she didn’t become a knight just to be kept safe. “But I’m partly to blame for this. I was the one who suggested that Aria go to the Ashen Woods this morning. Because of that, she fell into enemy hands, and Hilda and Hazel got hurt.”

This whole disaster was caused by my own foolishness.

Cecily clenched her fists so tightly it hurt. The truth was, she’d been struggling to keep up the façade of composure.

As Reginald mentioned earlier, there was no guarantee that Aria was safe. Just imagining what she might be going through right now made her heart feel like it was being torn to shreds. She wanted to bolt out this very moment, to go straight to her, but she fought to keep that reckless impulse in check.

“Cecily.” Hilda, burdened with guilt, cast her gaze down.
