Horatio Disraeli was a former priest of the Crowd Powers.

In the Crowd Powers, priest referred to a particular kind of missionary. The nation was comprised of small states, each with its own culture and religion, and conflicts—large and small—were constant. Preaching about the greatness of one’s home state in foreign lands often meant death within days.

Yet missionary work was vital to national prosperity. To survive, some underwent rigorous combat training. These were the priests of the former Crowd Powers.

Horatio had been one of them, until he was stripped of the title recently.

During a missionary visit to an orphanage, he slaughtered the minister and every child inside. When soldiers arrived, he cut down twenty-seven of them before finally being subdued.

His governing body abandoned him, erased all records of his affiliation, and disavowed any ties. Robbed of his home, Horatio had nothing left but to await
