“You’re awake.”

Noah followed the voice to see Horatio Disraeli approaching. He panicked, fearing the man had come to finish him off, but Horatio produced a flask, not a weapon. He had fetched water from a nearby river for him.

Noah, still unable to move, let Veronica take the flask and tilt to his lips. The cool water trickling down his throat was astonishingly soothing, refreshing every fiber of his being.

Horatio kept his distance, gaze fixed on a distant point beyond them.

“Where are the others?” Noah asked cautiously.

“They pulled out before us. I was ordered to carry you to the Imperial Capital once you woke up.”

“I see. I kind of wish you’d done that while I was still asleep.”

“No,” Veronica interjected. “Bones… need time… to heal… a little longer.”

“So we’re not to move you until then.”

“I see.”

There was no helping it. He would have to stay put until his body recovered.
