Interlude: Zenobia or Charlotte – Part 03
“That reminds me, Lady Charlotte,” Penelope said. “I needed to consult you about Lady Zenobia.”
“Hmm? About what?”
“Well, you see.”
“Excuse me. May I have a moment?”
The voice was so timid it almost got lost in the crowd. Charlotte and the girls nearly walked past without noticing, but when the words were repeated, they finally stopped.
It was coming from a man. Short in stature, he hunched forward in a somewhat servile manner, glancing up at them nervously.
Penelope instinctively stepped between them. “What is it?”
“Ah, um… I-I apologize if I’m mistaken.” The man’s eyes darted around before he whispered in a barely audible voice, “Is that young lady th-the Girl King?”
His gaze was fixed squarely on Charlotte.
The girls blinked, then exchanged glances.
“Why would you think that?”
“Ah, well, you see. There have been rumors that the Girl King has been sneaking into
