It was a once-in-a-lifetime proposal, thrown together without care for appearances or shame.
“Don’t regret this.”
“I won’t. And just so you know, I love you a lot.”
Luke lifted his head. “Not as much as I do.”
It was the answer she had fought so hard to draw out. Cecily’s heart pounded uncontrollably, and she couldn’t stop her lips from curling into a smile. The tension drained from her all at once, and her knees nearly buckled.
Right in front of her was the face of Luke Ainsworth.
His black hair, streaked lightly with soot, framed a gaunt face. His right eye, visible between the strands of his bangs, wavered unsteadily. It never focused in one direction, likely because of his severe visual impairment. Even from the outside, it was obvious he wasn’t in good health.
And yet, his face—the face she hadn’t seen in so long—captivated her
