Because she was guiding Luke, their pace was slow. They spoke only occasionally, exchanging a few words before lapsing into silence again. It was a calm stretch of time, free from pressure or posturing. Step by step, they made their way forward until they reached their destination.

A gently sloping hill stretched before them. At the bottom of its incline stood countless gravestones. This was the communal cemetery of the Sixth District, located on the edge of the city, far from residential zones and the urban center.

Carrying white flowers they’d picked along the way—the florist wasn’t open—Cecily and Luke visited three graves.
