“Wh-What happened?”
“I let my guard down. Guess I’m getting old.”
He forced a weak smile, but his face was slick with cold sweat. It was clear he was pushing himself. In fact, it was a miracle he was still conscious at all.
He was only able to stand because he was leaning on another person. Supporting him was a tall young knight, Hazel Kimberley. Standing behind her was another female knight with black eyes and black hair—Hilda Cavendish, a former slave-warrior from the former Crowd Powers.
Both wore equally grim expressions, and signs of exhaustion were clear on their faces. That was only to be expected. One look at their dirt-caked appearance and Gordon’s horrific burns made the severity of the battle immediately obvious.
No other members of their unit were in sight. If Hugo’s memory served him right, Gordon should have been commanding the front lines
