Ewen Benjamin was a young scholar.
He specialized in continental history and, as part of that study, had developed a deep understanding of Prayer Pacts. From a young age, he buried himself in books, which led to his constant use of glasses. He had worn them for so long that they’d become his signature, a symbol of his intelligence.
But when those scholarly glasses were dust-covered and foggy, they no longer signaled wisdom, only underscored his miserable situation.
“This is hopeless.”
Ewen hugged his knees and let out a heavy sigh. No matter how many times he checked through the smudged lenses, nothing changed.
The cobblestones under him were still biting cold. The stone walls on either side were still stifling. The iron bars in front of him didn’t budge an inch. And from beyond those bars, groans drifted from people who seemed to be begging for help.
